Theres a few things...

Theres a good market that is held in the Mongomery Sq carpark on a Saturday morning...lots of arts and crafts, foodie stalls, etc.

Theres a walk you can take to the 'centre of NZ' and its only about 30 minutes and starts from Nelson city

Tahuna Beach is lovely and it has a petting zoo called Natureland and also has a park with hydroslides

Theres the Wearable Arts museum with a collectable cars display as well (slightly pricey though)

You could take a drive to Kaiteriteri (about an hour from Nelson city). Lovely golden beaches and huge mansions on the hills!

Theres HEAPS of cafes (I listed a good child friendly one in the 'child friendly outings' thread)

Theres a visitors centre in the city centre too. I'm not a true 'native' of Nelson, so I'm sure the other Nelson ladies will have some more ideas...

Nelson is beautiful you will love it.

Kaiteri beach is a must and if you turn off just before you end up at little kaiteri which I think is better because there aren't as many people.

Maitai Valley has some nice walks too.

We're planing to be in Nelson around the same time! LMAO I'm sure we could amuse ourselves in the vineyards and we've got 2 whole months to teach our girls how to drive their drunken mothers back to the hotel

Nelson is awesome, as its only just over an hours drive away, I go over alot, was over there yesterday.

Founders park is cool, Tahuna beach rocks, um, shopping out at richmond mall or just in town is nice.

We can come over for a playdate...(and meet up with the other nelson mums)

oh yeah meet up will def happen!!!! altho i apologise in advance for BSDH....the auckland girls and Kels will understand this one!!! or just read his latest thread!!!

Anna - Ya gotta be freakin kidding me!!!! I hate heights (says she who is 6 foot tall!!)

Toni let me know your dates - the girls would love the petting zoo!!

OK so...we are trying to decide - should we just hire a car and stay around nelson OR get a campervan and go a bit further afield then???? ideas on this??? what is close enough (drive) but too far for just a quick trip (camper needed) with a one year old?

not me, love. You mean Anna!

Depends on how much further afield you want to go. You can drive to Lake Rotoiti/St Arnard in about an hour, Blenheim is just over an hour away, Picton/Marlborough Sounds driveable in about an hour and a half (to picton through the queen Charlotte sounds) Um, Kaiteri and Golden baby etc all driving htere and back distance as well. Depends on where you want to go and what you want to do. Mind you, lots of Vineyards in marlborough plus lots of good day trips to the sounds on various boats etc too...

They sure would! Cailtin loved Butterfly Creek

We're hiring a car as we're doing the whole trip on air point dollars and fly buys (flights, some accom and car hire) and will be going down to Chch to catch up with mates.

I've done the campervan thing before when we first arrived in NZ and it royally sucked! It's no different than being stuck in a car and you get the joy of being stuck in the same place to sleep too Dunno how they would work with a car seat?!?!? We had a 4 berth one (can't remember the company) and I can't think where you would put the car seat other that up the front?!?!

Out Motueka/Kaiteri way theres the Riwaka Source which is amazing, Split apple rock and theres always the Able Tasman. You could do a day tramp in. You absolutely have to spend a day at Kaiteri Beach- it will be lovely that time of year too.
