Hi ladies, I am almost due and was hoping i could get advice on packing my hospital bag (im a last minute person)
I have a list i got from the internet but it seems like an awful lot to pack and I am sure I wont be using everything. I am planning to give birth at the north shore hospital (auckland) and I was wondering what you recommend I should actually take and what to leave out. The list is absoloutley long and I am wondering if I actually will be using everything? Its my first pregnancy and im such a newbie!

I packed a whole load of stuff in mine that I never used, even the food for DH never got eaten, her was way to busy to eat!

A couple of water bottles are essential.
I had a milky bar too, which I ate sooooo fast after having Cooper (about 2 minutes after!!) as I hadn't eaten in 24 hours and became VERY hungary straight away. The big list we got from Anti natal was useless! ------------- http://lilypie.com">

Don't bother taking dressing gown or slippers the hospitals are kept really warm for bubs so you just won't need them and just have cotton PJ's definately ones that button at the front if you intend to breastfeed. Perhaps a few snacks and some drinks you may get hungry a few hours after the birth and is easier not to have to pester the midwifes.
Make sure you remember the camera and your stuff for showering after so that you can feel human again!!! Oh and tons of black undies and make them ones you don't mind throwing away. They supply clothes, nappies and wipes for bubs so just have going home stuff for baby. -------------

Definitely agree re: snacks and drinks. I brought a drink bottle (north shore only have the small plastic cups) and once I had the epidural and wasn't in so much pain I had to send DH down to the hospital cafe to get me some chocolate. Would also think about some food for afterwards- I hadn't eaten for just under 24 hrs (apart from choc) and was sooo hungry and all I was able to get was a cheese sandwich afterwards (I missed the dinner time). Also a couple of pairs of PJs and button up tops and several pants, camera, mobile... NSH provided nappies,wipes,baby gown, pads, throw away undies (which were really useful, as you don't have to worry about cleaning them). I wouldn't bring too much with you, as your partner can always get you stuff the next day. ------------- Mum to Ella (5) and Tom (2) |

I didn't use much from my bag at all. Snacks, undies, maternity bras, and outfit for me and bubs to go home in. Hospital supplied everything else ------------- ">

| I used my water bottle, snacks (once in the maternity ward), undies and mat bras, one outfit each for me and Daniel, toothbrush and toothpaste for the days after and other bathroom essentials and a book (for when Daniel was asleep and DH wasn't there) |

Yes they give you gowns, maternity pads, nappies and one set of wipes. Burwood are the same apart from you get endless wipes.
One other thing to remember is disposable nipple pads they don't supply them. CWH supplies baby clothes burwood does not. Both supply bedding, towels flannels etc. -------------

I had a labour bag and a hospital bag. Didn't use anything in my labour bag, apart from my camera & bodywash & shampoo for a shower afterwards. I wore a hospital gown whilst I was at NSH.
In my hospital bag I packed too many clothes for baby and I. Baby wore a hospital nightie so didn't need any clothes apart from to go home in. Take some maternity pads, nappies & wipes as you don't get many. If I needed anything DH brought it in for me. ------------- http://alterna-tickers.com">

kawwww.........Nipple pads- very useful if you are breastfeeding, as you will find that once your milk comes in you will be leaking ALL over the place. 5 1/2 months down the track I am still using them...... You can buy either disposable or cloth breast pads. Make sure you have some comfy maternity bras or singlets to sleep in, as you will find you will need to wear them all the time. ------------- Mum to Ella (5) and Tom (2) |

I suggest chocolate and a cold drink for straight after birth, shampoo and conditioner, toothpaste and toothbrush to make you feel human again. Arnica drops for the bruising. I didn't use any thing else but had a very quick labour.
As for the few days after whilst in birthcare, i just packed as if i was still preggers and going away for a couple of days and for bubs a few growsuits and a wrap - they just sleep all day anyway. Everything else was supplied. -------------

Nipple pads = Breast pads, once the milk comes in you usually need them. However they don't have to be disposible you can buy washable ones which feel so much nice on tender nipples. As the others have said you don't need much and if you do forget anything you can get people to bring it in for you. ------------- I was a puree feeder, forward facing, cot sleeping, pram pushing kind of Mum... and my kids survived! |
