I dug quite a bit of my compost up when we dug our new vege garden up. I put some in with my new carrot patch and then a whole heap into the new garden so I could start planting in it now (which I have done). The other day we found some random plants growing and we have worked out what they are...

Pumpkins . I threw out an old pumpkin that had gone mouldy and the seeds have given me some plants . Hopefully they grow well.

YAY! Yeah I have heard about that with pumpkins! Am hoping my compost bin grows some as I put all our vege scraps in there, including heaps of pumpkin seeds.

Hey Becks a bit OT, but can I ask you about potatoes? I have had some seed potatoes in the shed getting sprouts on them, and I think they are now ready to plant. They are quite big and I read somewhere you should cut them into smaller pieces, as long as they have at least one sprout they will be ok. So is that what you did? And do I plant them with just a bit of soil over the top and keep adding more as the sprouts shoot up? When do you know they are ready? Sorry for all the q's...

Just leave them whole and put the biggest sprouts pointing towards the sky do you get what I mean?? The other sprouts will grow off to the side which is fine.

Put quite a bit of soil/compost/potting mix over top of them. Once they sprout up you can put grass clipping/soil/sompost around them to help grow.
