I have booked my dog in tomorrow to be put to sleep. Some of you may remember Ive been struggling with this decision for months now but i think its finally time. He is so sore and old and still loosing control of his bowels quite often plus and this is one of the biggest things, i dont trust him around the kids anymore and we always have other kids over. The other day a wee girl tripped and bumped into him and he yelped and barked it hurt him so much and of course then she started crying cos she thought he was going to bite her and although I dont think he ever would hurt anyone how long till it does happen. Im soooooo sad but it has to be done... everyone keeps telling me how old and bad he looks but i think i just havent been able to see it. What do I tell kobe? Do i tell him the truth or just say that he has gone to live somewhere else?

I'd be inclined to tell him the truth, if you said he was going to live somewhere else you might get asked about visiting (I did this as a kid)
Poor doggy though, it sucks when you have to put pets down!

I'm a strong advocate of telling the truth to kids that age. Even though it's sad, it can sometime eliminate awkward questions later on. I'd be inclined to tell him that the dog is old and ready to die and we are going to take him to the vet blah blah. Not take Kobe though of course. And add that it's going to be a sad day but how about we have ice-creams at dinner time (or some other special thing to look forward to).
It's probably as good a time as any because in a couple of days the kids are going to be swamped with new Christmas presents and that can help them forget.

I would tell him the truth.
My neices & nephews are growing up on a farm and have animals die constantly around them. My BIL/SIL decided long ago to be honest with the kids about what happened to the animals and the kids cope with it really well. They understand that things live and die and because of it are no longer scared of the process as such.
They do it in a nice way and the animals are all in heaven being companions to lonely angels though.
Big Hugs to you, I had to this to our cat at Christmas the year before last and although it is a really tough decision it sounds like the best one for your doggy friend.

My thoughts are with you also, it's so hard losing a beloved pet
I also would be inclined to tell the truth just in as nice a way as possible.
Big hugs to you.

You will probably say he's old, but be prepared for questions about "old". My nephew sees everyone over 10 as "old" and got concerned that everyone he knew would die soon cause they too were old. You may want to clarify that a wee bit - same with "sick"

Big hugs, that is so sad. I would strongly advocate telling the truth. Children are often more robust with this than we would think, and even if upset they tend to become almost more inquistative about it all after a while.
Just take care with the language, like Lizzle says. If you emphasise him being sick then kids can worry every time they get sick that they will die. Say something like, when animals get very very old their bodies stop working so well. Our dog's body stopped working and he has died. His spirit is in heaven (if you have this belief) or, we can look at pictures of him and always remember how special he was and how much we loved him. Do you have any questions you want to ask me Kobe?
Don't say he has been put to sleep as it can give kids nightmares about sleeping, and noone needs a sleep problem!

I don't have any good advice unfortunately but I told my little sister when one of our cats got run over when she was about 14 or so. I told her the truth and then said that Tigger had had the best life a cat could have had even though it was short because we loved her so much every day.
Have no idea what to say to a little one though Hugs to you and your family, it's a horrible thing to have to go through.

Thanks everyone. Im feeling soooo sick about tomorrow. Thankfully its been a busy day so i havent had to much time to dwell on it but now i just keep thinking tomorrow im killing my max. and he's walking around like normal and i think maybe i shouldnt do this then i see him try to sit down and it looks like he is in so much pain it takes him a bit to get comfortable then i think no i have to do this.
Think i will tell kobe the truth, he is pretty good when it comes to death but he was really worried when max ran away a wee while ago and we couldnt find him, wanted to go looking for him every 5 minutes so i think he is gonna struggle with that but yeah hopefully christmas will distract him.

We had to put our Lab down back in September and we just told Blair the truth, he new Clyde was sick and getting old and we just made him cross and when my husband had buried him we took him to see where he was buried and he was fine with it.
I guess like adults, children have there own way of coping with things like this, in saying that Blair was 5 and Kobe is only 3 1/2, but i would go with the truth, good luck with it :)

A poem for you sweets ,im so sorry for your loss
"If It Should Be"
If it should be I grow frail and weak
And pain prevents my peaceful sleep.
Then you must do what must be done
When this last battle can't be won.
You will be sad, I understand.
Selfishness might stay your hand.
But on this day, more than the rest,
Your love and friendship take the test.
We've had so many happy years
That what's to come can hold no fears.
You'd not want me to suffer, so
When the time comes, please let me go.
Take me where my need they'll tend.
Only--stay with me until the end.
Hold me firm and speak to me.
Until my eyes no longer see.
I know, in time, you too will see
It is a kindness that you do for me.
Although my tail it's last has waved,
From pain and suffering I've been saved.
Do not grieve it should be you.
Who must decide this thing to do.
We've been so close, we two, these years...
Don't let your heart hold any tears.

My dog did this too as my dad was taking her to the vet. She was so old and tired (like your precious dog does) but when we opened the doors to take her to the van she trotted across the kitchen and JUMPED into the back of the van herself. I like to think that they know what's coming, and are ok with it.
I'm so sorry for you and your family, this is a horrible thing to have to do at Christmas.
