just out of interest- After totally emptying your milk supply, how long does it take to regenerate fully?

I dont think you ever totally empty your boobs. I think theycan always find a bit more. I also think (totally off the top of my head) that they are pretty much recharged in about an hour????

I think you always have something left, even when Lauren cluster feeds hour afer hour some evenings, she always manages to get alot of milk out, although to me they feel empty when I squeeze them!

I was told the sucking produces more milk, which is why babies can always get some out (even when they feel empty and you won't get much at all by hand/expressing).

I don't know about that... I've been exclusively expressing with an electric pump for 2.5 months now. And although the amount has dropped a little from what it first was (stupid midwife advice I blame) I am still able to give Joy breast milk for the most part of each day. I plan to keep going for as long as I can this way.

Hmmm that's interesting about the recharge time. I've got one sore boob today (maybe blocked duct) so tried to feed Anyssa from that side for a 2nd feed 2 hours after the first - she was grizzling and complaining, so I put her on the other boob and she was fine. It seemed like the other boob was still empty?

DJ - I've had similar experiences....Ella gets grizzly on the boob...feels like its empty...keep perservering until both of us get annoyed....swap boobs and away she goes......I know they say there is always something there.....but the 6pm feed feels like I've "RUN OUT" after a long day......wish boobs had a 'empty' + 'full' gauge like a car!!!!!

I find too that at the end of the day the let down takes longer to come in.

Boobs always have a bit of milk in there but if you have just fed there won't be much in there compared to the other side.

one boob might be easier to drink from than the other hence the frustration. Also if you do have a blocked duct maybe the milk tastes funny. Make sure you keep trying to massage it out and feed more off it or express off it. you DONT want it hanging around.

My midwife said one boob is usually the favoured over the other

and after a few months of breastfeeding the favoured one ends up bigger than the other

I heard from the LLL that boobs are never fully empty.

As NZpiper said - once your have been BF for a while and it is established they will always feel soft.

Swapping boobs can help a grizzly baby as they can get a second letdown of thirst quenching foremilk rather than having to work hard for the hindmilk. sometimes also a change of position helps too! and of course there is always the fav boob.

Rach and Jack i so hear what you are saying - i am embarassed to dress up for a night out as i am clearly lopsided.
