colposcopy?

I know the name but am unsure exactly what they do - i think it's a bit more in depth than just grabbing a few surface cells.. usually done in a day clinic type thing. fingers crossed everything's ok liz.

Colposcopy.

I've had a few done at the hospital. You lay on a bed with you feet up in strips and they put the thingy in like a smear. They spray some stuff on your cervix if you recast they take a small sample. Doesnt hurt just uncomfortable.

I have to have one of these too - and am scared! I have an appt for 10 January... Lots of people I have mentioned it to have had them - I gather that abnormal smears are reasonably common...

I have to have them all the time. It sucks but not that bad really. I don't much appreciate when they take the sample. But the first one I had done they put a camera up there and I could see my cervix on a tv screen next to me.. and that's just wrong lol. It's worse if you watch it.

my first ever smear was done at the woman's clinic in Waldegrave st where I was told my cervix was "beautiful" and shown it in a mirror - so the screen thing would be no problem - although weird.

About 10 years ago went up with my gf when she had hers done, but can't remember much - apart from her saying that I was to stay away from the "busineess end" - not that I was that interested in checking it out.

Geeez - with the mole removal and this, the hospitals will be sick of the sight of me.

we have a family history of cervical cancer so im just waiting for my smear to come back abnormal. Just had one done a couple of weeks ago and the doctor thought i would need a coloscopy cos of what she saw and some odd bleeding but the results came back fine thank god. I told my friend to go and get one done cos she hadnt for to long and her results came back abnormal and she is booked in for a coloscopy in january. I think its fairly common to have to have it done and from what ive heard yeah its not pleasant but not unbearable either. Good luck

Colposcopies every 6mths Stacey, that defintely sounds very extreme, I would be telling my GP nomore then once a  yr or even every 18mths. This will definitely be suffient and just have a  smear evey 6mths. Ekk your poor cervix lmao

Best of luck Lizzle , I havent had one but been to a few with patients. they say its more of a discomfort than pain.

Gosh what next for you girl, heres to not having anything cut out in 2008.....apart from whats already booked

I kind of have to Kels - they can't decide if I have high grade or low grade changes. Next time I go for one I'm gonna be harassing them to just get it over with and remove the cells rather than me going back so often

I was once every six months for them as well, but after having Andrew it seems to have settled down, down there.

Liz when you get your appointment let me know who is taking it and i'll let you know if they are nice or not. I have had dealings with all the OB/GYN's at Palmy hospital.

Oh what a shame that she is leaving. She's not high on my list of Gyne's to go to. I know she is doing private practise stuff at southern cross. Is she still staying there??

Kathy is weird - she didn't instill much confidence in me when I was in labour and she came in with bruises all over her face and a busted arm in a sling lol

I don't know much about them, but I hope the results are normal and it's just a precaution that they need to take more samples.

I'm an odd one - I liked seeing it on the TV!! I'm on 6 monthly colposcopies as well - mine were high grade changes though, they know that. I found it no more uncomfortable than a smear, except the third sample they took made my eyes water slightly (I didn't watch them take the samples!!!). They may not necessarily HAVE to take samples though, so don't panic about that!!

I'm waiting on my 6 month smear result now, and my 6 monthly colposcopy appt - they took a lot of cells out in July.
