We've decided to get ourselves a chest freezer but help! We have seen a Fisher & Paykel 358L for $850 and so I called a competitor company and they stock Westinghouse brand and are prepared to drop one down to $800 to compete - but it's 'only' 320L. It's about 10cm less wide than the F&P one.
Any thoughts on what brand is better?

I always go for fisher and paykel as I trust the brand. I had heard that the westinghouse fridges and washing machines are noiser but not sure on the cheat freezer.

Yes, but didn't F&P get moved over to Thailand or something? They always WERE a reputable brand, but now I'm not so sure...

I forgot about F&P moving - to Turkey, it was. Think we'll go with the Westinghouse, might be better for servicing later on if necessary.

My ex and I bought a 360L chest freezer - F&P - and it's been excellent. Very quiet and no problems. The Westinghouses were more expensive for the same thing, and you do notice the size diff if you have to get it for a specific thing (we bought ours because we had got half a beast, and there's no way in heck it would have fit in a 320L - it only just fit in the 360L, plus our freezer in the fridge). Mum and Dad have a Westinghouse fridge which they've had for years and no probs, but by the same token I've had a F&P fridge for 7 years and have also had no problems at all. All of my whiteware is F&P. Just a note - although the actual F&P freezer etc may be made overseas, the components are made in NZ (Mum used to work for the company that made them, they're based in New Plymouth).

i love F&P. but i think i would be more worried about the energy rating of both of them. Not a huge difference in space

Thanks for that info about the beast sizes, Kate. My mum has a whopping 700L chest freezer (F&P) and she said the half beast they recently bought filled a third of it. Must have been younger than yours lol
Does anyone know if there is a recommended spacing between appliances to be observed? We'll have a freezer next to a dishwasher next to a stove (provided it fits, that is) - any probs with that?
Energy rating: I was surprised to see that F&P was better on this one. The energy star rating is 3.0 for this particular size of F&P (but most of their sizes are 2.5) and 2.5 for WH. But the usage for F&P was 433 p.a. and WH 706 p.a. But in the scheme of things it's less than $30 diff a year so no biggie for us.

Yes you do need an air gap around appliances, is normally about 10mm (will tell you in the instructions which the shop normally have on display with the display model). It might also say to not put it next to another appliance, but personally I don't think it would matter next to a dishwasher as its not like you run that all day so not the same as sticking next to another freezer etc. You just need to make sure there is enough room for the heat to disapate.
Yeah energy efficiency is a big factor when say looking at a washing machine or a tumble dryer but with fridges/freezers were the usage is over a year it doesn't make a huge difference, like you say $30 bucks a year is not really worth worrying about. Is interesting that a bigger freezer is more energy efficient though.
I don't think F & P are any better than most other brands, they actually just seem to be extremely expensive for no particular reason. I think mostly they are so popular and well thought of because they are an NZ company and not because they are actually better. I also wouldn't worry about them now being made off shore as they will still source components from the same place is just the actual assembly that is being done somewhere else.
Personal opinion, but for $50 bucks more I would get the bigger freezer. You will get that money back from the energy efficiency as well.

F&P for sure I would NEVER get anything by westinghouse, my dad was so pissed off with our oven fridge and dishwasher that were all westinghouse, we had so many problems with them, never had any probs with F&P!
