How important is it to put babies on their tummies? How long do they need on their tums each day? Also, most people seem to advocate a feed, play, sleep routine, but it seems silly to put a baby full of milk on their tum, and with Anyssa this usually results in sick. I usually wait about 10 minutes after Megan has had her feed before putting her on her tummy she will unusually bring up her milk , if she does, by then .
as for how long well until till they start getting cranky I try to give Megan tummy time after each feed (not straight after) and most times it only for a minute or 2. ------------- http://lilypie.com">

| We gave Daniel tummy time every day but remember it doesn't always have to be on the floor, it can be on you or on a pillow or something less hard |

sorry to lurk seeing as i dont have kids yet but all kids hate it in the beginning but they get used to it..a minute or two is great in the beginning..it helps with the connections in their brain and for learning to situp/walk and crawl. ------------- Mum to two amazing boys! |

My wee boy loves tummy time and has from the start so he has about 10 -15 mins of tummy time after each feed. Now he is a bit older, I give him tummy time before a feed sometimes if he isn't too grumpy. -------------

We did lots of tummy time and Lily never really hated it. But a friend didn't do any as she has an older toddler who would run over the bubba and her boy, who is a bit younger than Lily is almost crawling already after only starting regular tummy time in the last month or so. So while it is important to do things to encourage the head lifting and stregthening, I wouldn't panic too mcuh if it isn't that regular! (Unless there is a real head strength problem). -------------

Tummy time can be for ow ever long you want it to be. I tell mum if their bubbas doesnt like it then every nappy change just to pop them on the tummies for about 20seconds. Alternately just giving bubbas tummy time at least 3 times a day and for how ever long they like it. If its only 30seconds so be it. There are many different benefits to tummytime including the development sitmulation and the strengthening of their neck and back muscles. This strengthening help stop the flattening of the head at the back from back sleeping. Babies can have tummy time from birth, the sooner you start the better. Tummy time is also classed as over the shoulder and over the knee, which is good for a newbie but as they get older the floor is always the best place they are going to learn movement and coordination. Yay for our resident plunket nurse!!  Yeah I was just told a minute or so, a few times a day if they arent very keen on it. Lying on your tummy looking up at you is nice as well, and they seem to tolerate it better.------------- Aimee Hannah 22/10/05 Greer 11/02/08 |

I tried it about once a day, and did it only until bubba was unsettled. IMO it tires them out very quickly and isn't worth fighting about. They come to like it in time. Briona was a sicky refluxy baby, we could never lie her on her tummy or even on her back without her sicking up. She spent the first 3mos of her life in a bouncinette or some similar angle and I gave up on tummy time altogether. After then she was fine with it and started crawling at 5 1/2 mos  Kryssi on the other hand loved tummy time so much that she would even insist on sleeping on her tummy and she crawled at 10mos - so I say it's not as important as some advocate.-------------  |

My memory is fading but I do remember we tried to give Gina TT every day. Never right after a feed as I don't see the point of getting her to throw up milk she's just had. We did put her on her gym with toys in front and also on the bed. She quite enjoyed TT as she got older but I don't really remember at what age she started to. ------------- http://lilypie.com">  http://lilypie.com">

I was doing tummy time with caitlyn on my bed at hospital for a couple of seconds from the time she was 2 days old, shes always been advanced physically (and mentally) walked at 9 months etc, i dunno if the tummy time did anything to contribute to that, but it didnt do any harm either

I can see how you guys would think that (giving up too easily) but I still hold to my opinion that it doesn't make a huge difference in the long run and if it's too stressful, why bother pushing it? We did enjoy tummy to tummy time a bit though. ------------- |

It really does Teresa, I see it at work all the time and the babies who arent given tummytime usually have flat heads, poor neck and back control and sit ad crawl later. I can see how it is easy to just be of the opininon of what has worked with you for your 3 babies and thats great if you are happy with that, but when you are seeing over 25 babies per week and you are accessing their development and physical skills thats when it gets easier to see the bigger picture. ------------- http://lilypie.com">

my sister was old no tummytime till 3months so she was very suprised when i told her how my midwife and plunket nurses said from birth.
both my kids have been having tummytime every play time for as long as they like from birth, the nurses in nelson put haleigh on her tummy all the time and stressed how important it was. we do a play then feed routine with James because of his spilling he didnt enjoy tummytime if we fed him before. i have to agree with your comment kels on the poor neck control thing, JAmes's neck wasnt anywhere near as Haleighs was at his age because he refused tummytime with his spilling, but now we cant get him off his tummy lol ------------- http://lilypie.com">

LOL Alize hatred tummytime too and as I was really UNAWARE of the importance of it I didnt push it as much as I would no. Esp having a reflux baby, you need them to have the strength in their back to be able to hold themselves upright as this improves the reflux symptoms significantly in the same way as positioning them upright or raised at the head does. Alize now sleeps on his tummy....so much for hating it lol ------------- http://lilypie.com">

Carys had 'forced TT' at birth as premmie babies are placed on their tummy fulltime to assist lung development.
She hates it so much now that she has already learnt to roll over just to get off her belly - so i do the mean mummy thing too Myminis and roll her back onto her belly until she gets tired of rolling and gives in!!!

Actually, in saying that she has always had great control while laying down (rolling her head side to side while on her back and lifting it off the ground while on tummy, was doing the latter in her incubator from birth!) but can't hold it up for very long at all when she's upright.
