So we have been watching our beloved lab go down hill over the last few months, and finally have decided to let him go... The vet (our good friend) is coming over this afternoon to do the deed. This dog is DHs best friend and he is gutted... So to try and ease the pain a bit we are going to pick a new puppy out on Wednesday - BUT we have to fly to CHCH to get the one he wants...
Really want to know if I am going to need anything special to take Luke with us... and what I need to do to make the flight as easy as possible... on all of us ------------- Mum to two beautiful kids

Big Hugs. It's never easy to say goodbye to one of the fur family even when you know that it will ease all their pain.
The only suggestion that I have - which I've both read and been told would be to feed Luke on takeoff and landing. -------------

Thanks guys, we will be alright, but DH is going to be pretty cut up this afternoon.
We are going to get another black lab - as they have the disposition that we like, espcailly with a baby now ------------- Mum to two beautiful kids

We are in the same position. We've got a 13 year old dog and a 14 year old dog. The oldest dog is on his last legs and we know we will have to make that big decision soon.  Its never easy.

We just had a weekend in wellington. I found Lily fine on takeoff and landing. She didn't need to feed for ears on takeoff, and none of the other babies did either. But landing effected some of them so try and feed then if you can. Ideally Luke will be lulled to sleep by the aircraft noise. Lily was and slept through both landings, hence nop prpblems.
She sat on me with a belt around here than linked to mine. There are no basinets of Pacific Blue national flights, not sure about other airlines. Once up in the air, DH moved one seat along (if the plane is empty they leave the 3rd seat free so you effectively have a seat for the baby) and I fed her to sleep then popped her on the free seat. I was able to transfer her back to my knee for landing without waking her, whcih was awesome. You don't need anything special - the usual change and stuff, though it is much easier if you can change before you board so you don't have to do it on board. We didn't change her but it is pretty cramped in the loo with the table. Check about taking the stroller to the plane door, sometimes they let you take it to the plne then stow it below. You cant take anything to hold him on board which is a bit annoying with him being so little. If you have a font pack or sling, then use that (I used my hipseat for Lily, it was perfect) to take him to the plane. if the worst happens and he is upset and cries for the flight, remember that in the scheme of things this is an hour or so out of the people around you lives, and they will not only get over it, but won't remember it in a few days. Plus you never have tos ee them again so they can jolly well lump it! Most people are pretty good though as they understand it is hard to travel with bubbas. We have a black lab, they do have a lovely gentle disposition
I have never flown with a baby so cant help there im afraid but just wanted to say im very sorry for your loss |

we have a golden retriever and i just can't imagine having to make a decision like that.....i'm sorry for the loss of your furkid

Well we had Rocky put down last night, it went really well, DH didn't stick around, but I was there with him  . Then DH proceeded to get really drunk and it made him feel better - but not this morning, when he was feeling quite seedy!!  So we did the best thing and now are looking forward...
I think we should be alright with the plane trip, thanks for the tips miss  . We have booked a one bedroom motel unit so that he doesn't have to share with us (he can sleep in lounge) cos I can't sleep with his noises... The motel have a portacot, so that is one less thing for us to carry. ------------- Mum to two beautiful kids

Staying on Bealey Ave (recommended by dog breeder) somewhere called Tuscana Motor Lodge - bit of a splurge cos we on holiday - needed somewhere with a spa bath ------------- Mum to two beautiful kids

Thats good to hear! Am just tryiong to pack enough stuff into 2 backpacks and a nappy bag for us all... cos we won't have a car and so need to carry all the stuff... ------------- Mum to two beautiful kids
