Story http://www.stuff.co.nz/4354765a10.html - here

Personally i think its a bit OTT
6 cops??
And i thought the law said your could do, within reason of course, whatever, if the child was in danger etc
Busy body stander-byers didnt even offer to help the poor man with the injured child

You do have to wonder at some peoples priorites, I mean his other son was hurt and all they were concerned with is the Dad trying to stop the other son.

The Dad shouldn't even have to explain himself he was doing a great job.

I supposed technically you could argue a clip around the ear isn't a smack.

Brilliant!

How the cops can justify dispatching 6 cops for this and taking a week to respond to a break in to my friends dairy last year I don't know * rant over *

What a waste of time and energy! How about they concentrate on finding that Greenacres guy instead!

I can't believe the public and police response to this.
Ok a lot of people may not agree with flicking a child on the ear and telling him to shut up, I don't like to discipline like that, but seriously 6 cops? For that?!
The poor guy was stressed out as his younger child was injured and his older child was still trying to run around and ride his bike, we've all reacted sharply to our kids when we're panicking! Surely a teacher could understand this and help the poor guy out instead of accusing him of abuse!
Its things like this that make a law with good intentions into a stupid P.C. joke.
I hope he's successful in getting the warning removed.

And they say he may be charged as well. So totally OTT.

I do think the police response is OTT but that said I also fail to see how flicking his son on the ear was appropriate discipline even if the little boy didn't understand what had happened. I don't know...just to me something about flicking him on the ear sounds like bullying to me.

From the article the boy who was flicked was not in danger himself, he was just wanting to keep riding and was flicked to shut him up...

I would presume that he was helped with his injured son...knowing the media that probably got glossed over.

my daughter started choking last sat in church with my mum, on a pepermint, so my mum gave her a thump on her back as she was turning blue, aparently after church had finished some over opinionated lady went up to my mum and said that she was going to call the police for child abuse!!!! WTF id rather have a brused kid than a dead kid!

OMG you have got to be kidding me Catrad, that is the most ridiculious thing I have ever heard!! That is what they teach in first aid to use back thrusts to dislogde what the baby/kid is chocking on. I hope your mum told that lady where to go!!!!!!

Hmmm...it does sound like overkill, but I'm a bit skeptical as well because the media are so OTT themselves when it comes to reporting these cases. I saw a lot of coverage about this just before Christmas when it happened, why is the story being repeated now with no new information??

The real test will be whether the warning is removed because he was warning his son away from danger, or if there were other circumstances not being reported. I'm not impressed that no-one helped him with his other injured son, however, that's not on.
