I wish I'd had one Heard many a positive thing about them, or atleast using the bath during labour

I didn't have my babies in the water, but hoped int he bath once contractions were regular, and had to be hauled out each time to go to hospital - both times i got there just before starting to push, can honestly say that the water was great, made me feel a bit more relaxed and nice and it kept me warm, cos i didn't really want to have anything restricting my movement like clothes.. bath kept me warm instead. If i could have i would have loved to actually have them in the water... wish i'd thought of that once i got to the hosp each time. find out as much as you can from your midwife, also, ensure that your midwife actually does them before you get too far along... some midwives don't like to

my girlfriend had a water birth twice and swears by it, but as I said in the other post - i actually didn't like the sensatino of being in the bath at all - maybe it was the lying bit, so I don't think I'd be all that good for a water birth.

lol i didn't lie in the bath, i kinda knelt in there somehow and leant over the edge - probably nearly got stuck - have no idea how i didn't - have tried to do that same in a non-pregnant state... and couldn't!! no way could i lie in there. I find it really interesting how for some it slows things down and some it makes it quicker.. i think it depends on when you get in. The first time i got in when contractions were 5 mins apart - which was half an hour after they started and waters had already broken..so there was no going back anyway! i think the position i was in probably helped to cos i wwas upright with legs kinda apart a little so it was all baby and gravity doing the work. 2nd time round i left it longer cos i remembered last time the bath made things get closer together and move along... and my baby sitter hadn't turned up yet, so waited till she got there. again, my contractions were about 5 - 10 mins apart... soon as i got in, they were on top of each other. as it's been said, everyone is different.... won't hurt to try, but don't make it your only option - you may find you don't like it or it doesn't work for you at the time... always go in with an open mind and have plenty of other options to try. sorry i ramble....

I'm planning on having a water birth as I get really bad arthritis in my hips and I thought a water birth may help a little bit with that side of things. But as my midwife said we can plan for that now but on the day all plans may change, I may not be comfortable or whatever

I had a water birth!! It was fabulous, and if/when I have more babies they will all be water births too!!
It was totally unplanned. When I got to hospital I hadn't had anything to eat or drink for a while, my midwife told me to have something to drink. I gulped back jugs of water which then made me throw up, after throwing up I got too cold, apparently my body went into a sort of shock. I got into the pool to keep warm and never got out again! Although it still hurts I found it more bearable being in the water. My labour was pretty fast and despite being told I would have to wait a further ten or so hours, Quinn was born within an hour of being in the hospital. He was 10 lbs and I had no tearing or stitches which I attribute to the water.
The pool was brilliant, it was big enough to fit all of me in! And I spent most of my time half floating on my knees leaning over the side on my front (does that make sense?) Andy was by my head the whole time, talking to me. The pool is big enough for the dad to get in if that takes your fancy but I think Andy would have been far too weirded out for that!
Hope that helps! Sorry for the novel!!

Hey guys, thank you all for your suggestions etc. Ann, my husband Andy too. And he would be way too weirded out i think to hop in with me. But also, my best friend is going to be there with me. I really want a water birth becuase i have heard it helps with pain and i am not very good with period pain (which for me was crippling) so figure i will hop in for as long as i can. My friend had a baby 5mths ago and had a two hour bath which she found good, but said she couldntve stood being in water during the birth. Each person is different. I hope to be able to be in their, and like another friend of mine, if i can't handle it, or am too wasted to keep pushing, then get out. Is that wise du think? (AS you can tell, this is my first) :S

Chonny - just reading what you said about periods pains... sometimes having them so bad normally - kinda helps you in labour - cos you are kinda used to a fair amount of pain, so tolerate things alot longer, at least they come and go and you can have something that makes them go away a little... I remember thinking after having paris that labour wasn't that bad... considering i also got really bad monthly pains before then.. lol funny how it can be a positive thing - certainly never think that at the time.

Janine - that is so true! I never thought of that! I have always had really really bad period pains and when I was in labour I kept waiting for the labour pains to get worse because I thought "hey this is supposed to hurt more isn't it??" Now I think maybe it's because I am used to my period pains?? the pains were quite similar

hey Chonny, it's funny you say that about your partner being weirded out - my husband was really weirded out about the whole process. When the midwife asked him (during making a birth plan) if he wanted to cut the cord, he was kinda disgusted. But in the delivery room, it was completely different - he was actually really interested. Perviously he said he was staying completely away from "the business area" as he called it, but in reality he really wanted to see jake being born. It was a lot differne than he'd expected and he has been a lot more involved in this pregnancy. Also, he has told many of his friends about how he cut the cord.
With your hubby, if he is the same as mine, just leave the options open for him and he can decide at the time.

I had both my kids in the bath (actually, in the same one!) at Waikato Hospital. I found it fantastic. The warmth helped me cope with the pain, and the lack of gravity made the contractions easier to breathe through.
With Kiya, I arrived at the hospital 7cm dilated and with contractions 5 minutes apart... the bath slowed things down a little, but other than that it was great. I ended up delivering her squatting, with my midwife helping me balance with her hands under my armpits. My mum was my support, and she caught Kiya and cut the cord.
With Josiah, I got into the bath after my midwife monitored me for 30 minutes first - I spent most of that time asking when I could get into the bath! 25 minutes later, Josiah was born. I delivered him kneeling at the head of the bath, and Nathaniel held my hand and rubbed my back. I'm not sure how I did it, but after Josiah was born, I turned around (lifting my leg over the cord) and Josiah was put on my tummy so Nathaniel could cut the cord.

Lizzie - Peter was like taht! The whole pregnancy he was adamant he didn't want to know what was happening "down there" and when it came down to it I had to keep reminding him that I was "up here" he was fascinated and said it was "beautiful" and not gross at all!!

Did you have a mirror Ana, cause it was quite interesting. I never really understood people who videoed the birth - i mean, who do you show that to? but now I wish i had, so I could see it. I can't remember really what happened. Then again, maybe that's a good thing....

So are you going to video this one? I had a mirror - doing my birth plan plan I had said no to this but ending up not having a choice, midwife just bought it out! I found it kinda gross but it made me realise where I was meant to be pushing. Didnt like that I could see the head start to come out then go back in - thought it was never gonna come out!!

My midwife asked if I wanted to feel the head and I declined even on that. Not that it was a question of being grossed out, I just didn't want to put my hand down there and find out that she wasn't as far out as I thought. The disappointment would have made me give up!
If I ever have a babe I'm not sure I want my husband/father of the child there. I'm still a little freaked out at the simultaneous emptying of bowels

I kinda wish I had seen him coming out, although I know it would've grossed me out. One of those things I think about in retrospect! The emptying of the bowels things never really freaked me out, I chose to ignore it and convince myself it wouldn't happen! Although I know a lot of people worry about it. I can't imagine Andy would have been quite so keen to see me poo (hehe, try and find a nice way of wording that!!)

I couldnt sit or lay or even be touched on my back! the car ride to the hospital was... interesting!LOL) I felt his head and then when he was born the placed him on the bed under me (I was leaned over the egde of the bed.. feet on floor, top half leaning on a beanbag) I wish I could have seen it and then I could have put the 'wierd' feeling and seeing it together!

I know it's early days yet but at this stage I don't think I'd be too keen on having a direct view of things going on down there When we were in Canada we went to this awesome place called the Ontario Science Center, and one of their halls was dedicated to the development of the human body. Anyway, they had this tiny little room on one side shaped almost like a womb where about eight people or so could sit on a bench and watch a video of conception right through to birth - I managed to be staunch and see the whole thing but OH GOD !! I had to restrain myself from squealing in horror when they had the full frontal of the baby coming out... What a dork I am, pregnant and can't even handle a birth video

I had to leave my antenatal class before they brought out the vid of a birth... I figured it was too late to change my mind about actually having a baby and I didn't need to freak myself out any more!!
My midwife suggested a home birth next time (when I was pregnant with lost bubba). I like the idea. Was a bit weirded out with the fact that our house is rented and tiny and the only thing that put me off was that fact that I don't get to go to stay in the hospital afterwards and therefore staying at home with new baby and Quinn (ie. no break). Will have to think about that one should the chance arise again!

Well firstly cograts lizzle on bubs. I too am worried about the whole excretion thing as well, but isnt there a drug they can give you to stop it from hapening? I don't know if i will want a mirror, but if i had someone willing i would like it to be filmed. I know its kind of gross, but it is worth it i think for afterwards. I have a bad short term memory and would most likely forget what it was like, (i know sometimes it can be good) but i want to remember when baby was first put to the breast, when baby frst was put on me etc. I'm kind of really sentimental like that i guess

Wish i could have a water birth next time but the doctor told me the other day that because i had a c-section for Xanda i am going to have to be constantly monitored next time and be at the hospital and not allowed in water. My partner wanted to film Xanda being born but i flatly refused to let anyone film down there. In the end he saw everything when Xnada was born because he watched the whole c-section and got really grossed out with all the tugging and pulling that goes on.

U'll be fine Clare. When my midwife was talking to me about my birth plan and she mentioned the pushing part and said that she had many other women poo while pushing so it is nothing to be embarrassed aboutand that she had wiped many ladies bottoms before which really made me laugh and think what a horrible job. But i was still worried about it as well. As for being a mummy, I was worried as well but once I saw Xanda i forgot all about that and was just so happy and proud.

My mum the midwife says that pooing is not so common while pushing, there is no drug that can stop it happening but the midwife will just discretely get rid of it and most of the time you won't even know!
Also, re the cleaning up after a home birth... she says that she clean up most of the mess, any marks on the floor etc but you have to do the washing!
And Clare, about a week before Quinn was born it hit me that I shouldn't be worrying so much about the labour 'cause at the end of it I was gonna have to be a mum, it FREAKED me out! But once you are there, it is great!!

I keep looking at my friend who's a mum and thinking how unreal it seems that she was pregnant for 9 months, and now has this little angel to show for it. Although it all seems os unreal still, i just can't wait to hol dmy own baby in my arms, a baby i don't ever havge to give back. (being a nanny i have held lots of young ones, but always giving them back ) I just can't wait to be able tyo show him/her off as mine

he he, being a nanny is great - you think you have all the answers worked out... till you have your own and have absolutely no idea still... trust me, been there, done that.
I dunno if the pain is something to be scared of, fear makes pain worse cos your boyd tenses and fights what's sposed to be happening making it take longer and hurt more... but, hey, thinking about it, at least the pain is for something, it's supposed to be there, and you know what it is... not like if you just had pain like that for any other reason - now THAT would be scary.
