lol, no he hasn't agreed to one, however, just out of interest,
who's man has had one done?,
how much did it cost?
and how long afterwards did it take you to get preggers?
Also, what is the process etc?
Paris keeps asking him why we can't have another, he keeps saying he loves me preggers, I keep telling him i'd love to BE preggers, and well, I just want the facts to see if it's really all over.

The vasectomy - $400 or so. The reversal - 3k - if only! Try in the $6k-$7k region. The best chances of success for reversal are in the first three years, the sooner the better. In a small percentage of reversals (about 6%) scar tissue can gradually build up over time so an initially successful reversal can in effect be useless, however, storage of sperm retrieved after the reversal is an option. Sperm starts to come back after about 6 weeks, and takes 3-8 months to come back to normal. One of the unpredictable side effects is the development of antibodies, but I think a sperm wash in the lab can take care of that problem (probably more complicated than that).
This site has good information too.

Our doctor recommends a week off work as well because it is a general anaesthetic and just in case

Hi Mum2Paris
Yes my hubby had a reversal last March.
His Reversal cost just over $5000,I am pretty sure it can be less, just depends on where you go.
You sound like me last year, lol.
Any way his only cost so much as he had to stay in over night as they had to deal with scar tissue from an operation he had when he was a child as well as the scar tissue from his vasectomy.
We had a wonderful surgeon, who said it doesn't really matter what time is between vasectomy and reversal as he has heard of people who have had 10-20yrs between V and VR and still got pregnant really easy. So it just all depends. I do know that it is recommend, which I was never told, that if hubbys swimmers don't return on their own, sometimes they need a bit of help. DH has been on vitmains and homopathic stuff to help with count and motility as it did not return on it's own.
http://www.vrsupportgroup.proboards102.com/
This is a american website, but it is really helpful for people to ask questions before and after the VR.
Also if you are a memeber of Fertility Friend, there is a group in the community thread who are all ttcing after a VR.
No we are not pregnant yet,but we alway have our fingers crossed. As hubby is motility is back to normal and we are yet to do another Swimmer sample to confirm his count again. But will do that after this cycle, hopefully I won't ,or should I say hubby won't need to,lol.
Any way if you have any other questions, feel free to ask.
Oh we got referred to our specialist, but our doctor, but he was the man who did the original vasectomy so we knew him well. It had only been 18mths since vasectomy so when he saw us back in,he just laughed.

Thanks Tania and all the other ladies who have replied.
No, I don't think a petition would do it sadly,
and definately with that amount of money involved I don't think he would be willing at all to budge. sucks really.

Hi mum2Paris
Sorry you haven't got the news you'd hoped for, but to further confirm things re cost, my DH had a reversal 2 years ago, which cost $5k, and his sperm count is still low, even though he's had a little acupuncture and lots of herbs and vitamins - mind you it has improved a lot from the first few months. So we're having IUI in the next few days. The surgeon did say though, that the longer the time between the ectomy and the reversal the less likely the chances of success, and it had been many years for DH.
Re the sperm wash thing, that also (I believe) requires IUI (about $700 per cycle, if not puclicly funded) or IVF.

My friend's husband had his reversed a few years ago and it took them six rounds of IVF to have their little girl. So from memory she said the reversal cost around $4k, but then it was another $40ish grand on top of that for all the IVF stuff.
It was pretty awful for them but they have a healthy little girl now.

Hey purpledragon just out of interest what vitamins and homopathic stuff did your DH take to increase his count? My DH's is really low and just wanting to know what he should be doing. I have put him on blackmores mens performance tabs, Vitamic C and Fish Oil. Thanks

Has your hubby had a reversal too?
Agnus Castus from Homeopath, they said it would do good for healing after surgery,I think it act like a anti inflammatory. This showed improvement in his motility in a month.
Zinc Untra
Mineral-Power - Calcium
magnesium
boron
chromium
copper
iodine
iron
l-glutamic acid
manganese
molybdenum
potassium
selenium
vanadium
vitamin d
zinc
Maca
Last 3 from health shop, just asked the ladies who worked there.
Zinc,Selenium and Maca are all things I have read that help with count, but takes 3mths to show any affect in Sperm Sample.

So realistically, once the guy gets it done, it's still a whooooole lotta work to get a chance at a baby?
Why did i let him do it? argh would be so much easier if he hadn't had it done in the first place.

I think that all the time. We only had to try a couple of months to get our daughter and here we are 10mths later and still trying.
On a positive note though, there has been some who have got preggy after a couple months of trying, straight after the VR and some have had a short amount of time between V and VR and others had had a long time. So you just never know. Also you generally have to keep handing in samples to get tested until they are back to normal.

An update...
DH had an analysis done yesterday, and both the motility and count is 3 times what it was in the last analysis 5 months ago. so that was amazing news for us, as last time we were told that there was no chance of us getting pre naturally, and now there most definitely is. I think the thing that made the difference was 3 supplements from the health shop:
Co-Enzyme Q10
L-Arginine
L-Carnitine
I did some research in the medical journals, and research has shown an increase to normal levels in serverely infertile men after 6 months on Carnitine. It's quite hard to get though, and quite expensive. The cheapest I could fins is Red8 brand, which costs $38 for 50 caps - basically a months supply. But he's been on other supplements for ages, and although things had improved a little, this big difference has only come about since he's been taking these. So maybe the $5k was worth it after all - and he had his vasectomy done at age 24 and reversed 20 years later.

Oh Catie that is awesome,it gives you knew found hope when you get good results back.
Can ask what the results were and at what stage, like how many month after VR. And what they are now?
Just curious.
Yes I have heard that those vitamins are good.
Ours in Oct 3million count and 3% motility and Nov was 9million and 50% motility. So we are looking forward to the next one after being on vitamins for my 3rd cycle now.

Hi Purple Dragon
The reversal was in July 05; In Nov 05 the count was 2 mill, with 5% total motility.
In June 07 it was 3.3 mill with 16% total motility of which 7% was rapid (25% is normal)
about 10 days ago the count was (I think) about 12 mill with 32% total motility and yesterday, about 9 million with 58% motility.
This might be TMI, but the number of days abstinence seemed to really make a difference: the one 10 days ago was after 5 days abstinence (while AF was here ) which had a high count but lower motility, then yesterdays was after two days abstinence = lower count but great motility = so they seem to start dying off after about 3 days.
Hope that helps! Things seem to really be improving for you anyway.

We were lucky in some ways that we stored samples before the vasectomy. I wanted some extra insurance just in case I changed my mind. Unfortunately it was only later that we discovered that we hadn't stored as much as we thought, so we only have enough for 2 attempts at IUI and maybe a little for IVF. Therefore, even with pre-existing motility and count issues, it's still worth trying for a reversal, and leaving IVF for later. A successful reversal at least gives us less problems for undergoing IVF. However this means we're facing paying for both a reversal and probably IVF. The current storage cost is $180 per year, so not a lot in the scheme of things.
Fingers crossed purpledragon and catie, it all sounds very promising!
What I'm trying to say is that our backup option hasn't turned out to be very promising for us, but I would still recommend it to anyone thinking of having a vasectomy. Sorry that's not much help to you now mum2paris, but maybe it could help someone else knowing it's an option.

Hey purpledragon thanks for that info. No my DH hasn't had a reversal. He just has a really low count. Less than 1 million and not very good motility. ANyway might go and hunt out some vitamins in the weekend. Thanks again

Yup my DH did have one, I think it cost around $800. It was successful, but unfortunately due to it being 5 years since the original vasectomy, his body thought the sperm was 'disease' and created antibodies to fight the disease, hence killing off the sperm. We did IVF in the end and that was successful. But if it's not long since your DH had the op it has a high chance of being successful. Good luck!
