Hey ladies, hoping that you experienced mums can help out here. I'm due in July and came across a suggestion to chuck in a packet of nappies with the weekly grocery shop every now and then so I have a stock-pile when bubs arrives. I thought this was a marvellous idea but... what is the best brand of nappies to buy? If I have a 10lb baby(please God No!) will they fit ? Should I get some in the next size up as well? Are there unisex nappies in newborns? Is this a stupid idea? So many questions from a first timer who doesn't really know anything about nappies! Your experience is appreciated.

personally i preferred huggies or treasure ultra while they are still quiet small. all new born nappies are unisex i think.

Like you I knew very little about nappies especially the 'what brand to buy' question. I did a minor stockpile (bought 2 boxes of newborns when they were on special) I have found that newborn naps are non-gender specific, and we managed to get thru both boxes before going up in size. (B was 9lb 2oz at birth) At the moment we are also looking at other brands, and currently have 3 different types (and 2 sizes) of nappies in the house and at them moment just mix them up to try them all out. I figure that if we bought on special, and tried them, then we would get a better idea of what works for us. Yes we have a favourite brand, but am finding some of the cheaper brands to be working just as well, I'm generally using a cheaper brand thru the day and a more well known brand at night. Some sites offer free samples (1 nappy) which I found both useful and not useful - especially if bubs didn't do what you wanted them to do in it IYKWIM  .
I probably haven't answered your question but that's where we are at. -------------

Personally we prefer Huggies as well. As they can be quite expensive I look out for when they are on special and buy 4 packs of them at a time (you can get them on special for about $8.99 as opposed to $12.99).
Newborn Nappies go up to 5kg, we had a 4.4kg bub (10lbish) and we used 4-5 packs of the newborn if my memory serves me right before changing up to the next size. (so around 100 ) I would recommend getting around 100 - 150ish of the newborn size and then a few of the next size up, as you can always buy more newborn if need be. ------------- http://lilypie.com">  http://lilypie.com">

What nappies work best can depend on the shape of your baby too. I found treasures gaped around the legs but other people swear by them. I prefer Huggies and also find that the signiture range are just as good. I would also recommend the Huggies brand - didn't have any leakage problems whereas with other ones I tried I did. I plan to stock up on some again with this baby once I find out what it is. ------------- Sebastien 2 years old Olivier 3 3/4 years old |

I'm not a fan of Treasures or Huggies. Personal choice etc..
We buy our nappies from Nappies for Less, since Cooper was born we haven't brought one packet from the supermarket. Baby Factory do a good newborn nappy too, called Soft Love, from memory they are $8.99 for 40. when i was using disposables (now in modern cloth) i personally didn't like huggies or treasures...i bought online in bulk and my fave brands were sealer, air and cien nappies. they are available from a couple of different websites, if you google them you'll find them.
i also found ones like home brand and budget are good too. if i have to use sposies these days i get them, $5-6/pkt and they also last my kids overnight!
i found using cheap nappies at the start the best option, because you change them so frequently. that's my personal opinion ------------- http://www.alternatickers.com">

| Im very glad I didnt get any newborn huggies as I had 2 sample ones that cut into Isla's thighs something awful. She was 8lb 6, but had to go straight to the next size up in huggies (which I had got before she was born). Never got them again. I still like Treasures Ultra best, but only ever use them if we going away. Isla has been in MCN's since 5 weeks old. Love them! Will save you heaps of $$$ in the long run too! |

We use Huggies too - their newborn ones are for both boys & girls. If you need the larger size, then you'll need to buy them for either boys or girls.
If you do stockpile, keep your receipts so you'll be able to change them for a larger size if need be. Another idea, rather than buying the nappies, is to get a $10-20 voucher each week with your shopping and then use it later for whatever you need. ------------- http://lilypie.com">  http://lilypie.com">

We started with treasures, but now i use huggies.
Treasures react with my DDs bottom. i love huggies and always buy bulk when on special.  ------------- Desiree

i use homebrand for miss 3 as she is only in nappies at night and they do the job.

I buy from babyonline.co.nz - the dryups are awesome and really cheap.
instead of buying nappies with your shopping, whcih as you say may not fit a bigger baby or be right for them (huggies and treasures ultra leaked on Lily and giggles didn't - go figre!) I advise people to chuck in a box of washing powder, extra loo paper, toothpaste, dishwashing powder, deodarant, shampoo and other consumbles that are not reliant on best before dates. That can free up a fair bit of money each week with shopping which you can then buy cheparer, better nappies on line with! We are still going through a lot of the stuff we stocked up on, so it works! -------------

I prefer Huggies over Treasures any day... Keziah has really skinny thighs and Treasures did nothing but leak (wees and poohs) EWW and I only ever had trouble with the Huggies when she was due to go upto the next size..  -------------
