Hi all just wanted some advice on expressing milk. I never bothered first time round but this time would like a little flexibility and also want to try topping DS up with EBM at night.
So what I want to know is how do I go about the whole process?? I have just bought a medela pump and know that I should express first thing in the morning after he feeds but for how long? I am guessing it may take a few mornings to get a decent amount, correct? Also we have a wedding to go to in 5 weeks time so if I leave him with Mum to give his feed that night do I still have to take my pump with me and express the feed he would normally have??
Sorry if I sound completely hopeless but I really don't have any idea and don't want to muck around with my milk supply. Also DS is 2 1/2 weeks old how much is he likely to drink in one feed?
Also do people use the bags to freeze their milk? I got some medela bottles that you can freeze milk in but only have 3 so guess I will need something else?

Right waffle over , thanks in advance for your help!

This is what I use to do for a feed for DH to feed at night:

- express a little after each feed (if I had time), I only did it for about 5 mins each time.
- express first thing in the morn, Daniel would take one side, I would express the other off

We used ours as I expressed it, I very rarely froze it so can't help you too much there. But I used the Avent via cups, they were great for us (got 10 in a pack)

I expressed in the morning as Stacey said, give Tom one side, express the other. As for needing to express at the wedding....you might because you will probably be bursting at the seams by then. Now I can get away with missing a feed but I wouldnt haveback then.

As for freezing, I found the medela bags excellent as the took up very little space. but the scot in me wonders if Glad snap lock bags would work as well

I brought some bags for storing milk in the freezer- got them from Foodtown, can't remember the name of the brand but they were in purple and white packaging. I find them really useful.

I agreed with NZPiper, I would definitely sometime in the night after you go the wedding- otherwise you will be so full by the time you wake up.

I normally express after the first feed in the morning and then a little bit after each feed during the day- but it does depend on how milk you want stored.

Can't help you sorry without how much he should have in one feed- Ella normally drinks around 200ml in a feed, but she is bit older

nzpiper glad snap bags work perfectly! Thats all I have used since day one! I use the smallest bags available about 10cm wide by by about 5cm tall, perfect sized for storing breast milk!

Sorry to thread-jack but I've been wondering can you combine all the milk you express over a day?

Whenever I express it goes straight into ice-cube trays and then once frozen into the glad bags. For me its a really good way to measure out especially if I just want to top him up.

Bobbie, I understand thatif the milk is the same temperature ie, you've had 2 lots in the fridge for most of the day, then yes, but you shouldn't add freshly expressed to previously expressed cold or frozen milk

Lottiesmum chances are you will want to express because you will be so full but you don't need to bring your pump or keep the milk if you don't want to. I went away from Jack at the same age and hand expressed enough to make me comfortable down the sink.

Bobbie yes you can you just have to make sure its all the same temperature. So I would express it into a bottle and then put it in fridge and when its cool enough then add it to the earlier expressed milk.

Everybody else has said pretty much what I would've said re expressing, but just wanted to add we used the glad ice cube bags, which were fantastic!
