I read last night that you need at have a luteal phase of at least 10 days (avg 10-16 days) to sustain a pregnancy. Mine have consistently been under that

I'm not sure how many days long it was when Caitlin was concieved because we had stopped charting then waiting to see a specialist.

Mine was usually 10, sometimes less but never more than 12.
I spoke to my GYN about it when we were TTC as 10 is apparently borderline and he said there are two schools of thought on LP defect and he takes the side that unless your LP is only 3-4 days or so you will have enough progesterone to sustain a pregnancy should you get pregnant.

My lp has only been 10 days at the most for the last 6-7mths and I have been researching to see what I could take to lengthen it. Last cycle I tried vitamin b6 50mg the whole cycle and natural progesterone cream after ovulation and my lp was 11 days which was better. If you take decide to take vitamin b6 take it in conjunction with a good multivitamin. I have also read that vitamin c can also help so have been taking that as well, and if you want to try ester c non acidic. Any questions let me know.

Apart from one I had that was only 7 days (first cycle off the pill) mine have ranged from 12 to 14 days. I've heard that you can get progesterone suppositories on prescription that will lengthen your luteal phase for as long as you use them. You could try asking your doctor about that.

Ok, this is a subject I am totally still unsure of.

Is your lp, the no of days between ov and af? If so do you count ov or the day after?

Also for everyone here, what has been the best way of detecting Ov that works for them?

Yes it is - I think you count OV

EDIT: I just time it... my cycles don't usually vary by more than 3 days though. I also sometimes get mild cramps - and get a little more libedo

I understood LP to be days past OV so the day itself is not part of the count.

As for best detection method - I have been charting for some time so have a fairly good understanding of my cycle that way and I'm pretty regular in OVing within a day or two of CD14 so know to get jiggy wit' it leading up to this day. I also monitor my CM as almost always get EWCM a day or two before I actually OV.

according to my charts the luteal phase is the day after ovulation until your period
ie: on my Oct/November chart I ovulated on CD 19 and got AF on CD34 - the days in between was my luteal phase of 14 days.

If you chart regularly - it tells you how long your phase is each month!

12 days for me like clockwork- my cycle could be anything from 26-32 days but my LP was always 12 days.
