Ok, its a fine sunday morning, so time for a new topic.

Has anyone used the product maybe baby - and if so what are your thoughts. About 2 months ago a lady in a pharmacy convinced me it was the best ov detection method in the shop and since then, well i've been a little confused by it.

Anyone had any luck or tried it at all?

i have used something similiar, i know that maybe is $100 at the chemist, sorry babe but they are only 25 on trademe.

anyway i have one, and i have found that i need to use it from day 8-16 and you use first morning spit and put heaps on, and if you can, very carefully remove any bubbles and just leave it to dry...mine use to take about 30mins.

then look at it, and you will be able to tell if you are going to ovulate or whatever as you will see fernlike structures, you cant mistake them.

if you dont do it in the mornings, then you need to do it 2 hours after food or drink, or brushing your teeth.

I have fallen pregnant twice using this scope, so good luck

Wow - that's a good hit rate.

Yes I was conned into the $80 it cost me ( i think it was on special too) my issue is that I have now remembered to start using it first thing and this month it did fern a lot between cd14 - cd17.

Then it went back to pebbles, only yesterday morning, cd24 right back to ferns again and this is what I have had in previous months, ferning seems to happen randomly for me.

This was the clearest month and I was really pleased, until yesterday morning

I think it is possible to have an estrogen surge a few days after ovulation and also right before AF. So the ferning may be reflecting that. My method of detecting ovulation is through charting my temperatures and observing my cervical mucous (which changes when you are fertile). I find this gives a really clear indication but I can understand that this method might not be for everyone.

I looked into a ferning scope but I have friends online who used them with OPKs and got really different results, and it just looked so confusing!

I to looked at the 'maybe baby' testers but after finding out the price - just on $100, didn't buy it but came home and googled 'ovulation testers' and found some on trademe called 'perfect time'. These looked almost identical to the ones from the chemist but were only about $29 buy now price. I have only used it for 1 month so far. It was really easy to see when I ovulated but I stopped using it after I ovulated so didn't see whether it showed more ferning later in my cycle. I will definatly be using it every month to help me know what day I ovulate. I think they are really good to have.

I have one of these and I really like it. I do it first thing when I get up in the morning and then leave it to dry before looking at it. And you do have to make sure there are no bubbles in it.

Bella - fingers crossed that's why I am ferning twice in one month, but I don't think so.

BaileyandAstin - that's awesome, when you say combined with the temp method is that just taking temps everyday - something i will admit i am not good at.

I have got a maybe baby but find it quite difficult to use. I never seem to show ferning even when I know I have ovulated.
How much saliva are you supposed to use?

Ferning means you have high estrogen levels which go high (from being low) just before ovulation, as opposed to OPKs which measure progesterone (sp?) levels as they rise during and after ovulation.
Soooo... measuring the saliva via something like Maybe baby is often a good indication that ovulation is approaching i.e. time to get BDing rather than OPKs which tell you do it now or very soon.
Lite ferning (just a few ferns and pebbles) shows it is increasing and lots of them shows it is high.
I used the Maybe baby microscope and successfully got pregnant within a couple of months. This time I'm charting as well to see where things are at, but the MB kit will help.

The one thing I have found is that if you leave it too long after the saliva drying (like an hour or 2) you can get full ferning but not actually have high levels, and I think this is from the sample degrading over time.
Always check as soon as it has dried (usually about 20-30mins for me) And agree with the above about getting a good gob of it and making sure no bubbles. There is a knack to it, but it is easy when you check every day

According to the opk's and the saliva testing I did, I ov'd around cd 15 to cd 18, I am getting the ferning pattern again and its cd26, very very confusing

Not sure why you would be getting positive results this late in your cycle, altho i did get positive results for awhile when I was pregnant as well.

This is from the fertility Friend website:

Estrogen and Devices
Several devices have been developed to monitor your fertility throughout your cycle. Many of these devices,
such as saliva microscopes and some fertility monitors also measure the presence of estrogen in your body.
Saliva microscopes show increased "ferning" patterns as estrogen increases. Devices that measure hormones
in your urine will tell you that your fertility is high when high levels of estrogen are detected. These devices
have been developed to indicate your proximity to ovulation by measuring the quantity and presence of
estrogen (and in some cases other hormones as well). While they are not essential if you are able to observe
your cervical fluid pattern, they can complement your own observations. The fertility signals offered by such
devices are secondary fertility signals and can be useful to cross−check and confirm the signals from your
primary fertility signs.
Observations and devices that show increased estrogen are not able to confirm ovulation. They tell you that
ovulation is approaching and that you may be in a fertile phase. These signs are very helpful for timing
intercourse. To know that you have ovulated though, you need to also track your temperature, the sign that
indicates increased progesterone.

I've got Maybe Baby but don't think it's all that great. I get random full ferning so I stopped using it now. I much prefer charting my temps (gives a much clearer overall picture of when I O), and also use digital OPKs.
