Hi, was just wondering what is needed to take to the hospital, what other ppl took and how much of what was taken was actually used.

What should be taken foodwise as well.

NOthing like being prepared in advance.

dont forget your razor. I forgot and that all I really needed. I took some day clothes as well, felt good getting out of my pj's. A eftpos card is handy if you get hungery, and you can go for a walk to the cafe, leave Bubs with Dad for a few mins. Its good for youand great for Dad. He gets a bit of bonding with the baby.

I took mizone and glucose lollies. Yep def reccommend your own pillow. Also some jandals to wear in the shower and stuff. Heaps of nice loose granny undies and nice loose fitting clothes As your tummy may be a bit sensitive.

Lollies - my lunch was forgotten and I would've starved. Also take some nappies and clothes just in case. With jake, they brought me some hospital clothes but this time they made me fend for myself more and it wasn't until I left that i found where they babies clothing was that I could've borrowed. Also a water bottle is helpful. Pen and paper!!! Some cash to make phone calls or buy the paper. I agree with the pillow - which reminds me I left mine up there. Everyone always says a dressing gown but i found the maternity ward so hot i didn't want one. Own pjs as the hosptial ones are icky. i felt more comfy in my own clothes anyway.

I took heaps of stuff for when I was in labour and didn't use any of it. But I did go thru heaps of baby clothes (I was in for 3 days), and undies (granny ones like Maria mentioned). Also check whether the hospital supplies nappies and sanitary pads, most do but pays to check (I pinched a couple of packets of each before I left ).
Two things I didn't take but needed - a decent outfit to come home in (took some scruffy maternity clothes, so all of Maya's going-home pics have me looking scruffy), and a blanket to wrap baby in. I figured as it was Feb a shawl would be fine, but she really needed the blanket to regulate her temp, so my midwife 'aquired' one from the hospital (not that I'm a thief, honestly )

Oh, and ditto what everyone else has said about food. I was starving the whole time I was in hospital coz the meals were small and labour, birth and feeding really made me hungry.
And pineapple juice does wonders for afterpains.

Definitely your own clothes, those hospital gowns are yucky, and to wear your own clothes makes you feel a whole lot better.I also took clothes for xanda coz the hospital clothes for babies were just as yucky. Some barley sugars for energy and to tide you over between meal times. Toiletries and i found i needed breast pads straight after xanda was born as my milk came in pretty fast and plus i was in hospital for 5 days. And like Maria said, Jandals for the shower, and comfortable granny undies.

Yep, breast pads definitley! I got out of the bath on day 2 and dried myself and couldn't figure out why I was still dripping. Hmmmm, seems I was dripping milk - way to find out my milk had come in lol.

I would also take something to read cos I got really bored in hospital - babies sleep a lot in the first few days.

how long does one normally spend in hospital anyway,
i mean what are the chances of being kicked out the same day if all goes well?

3 days is the maximum if you have a normal delivery, 5 with a c-sect. But you might have to stay longer if there are any feeding issues, jaundice, heavy post-partum bleeding etc.

And with your first there usually isn't any pressure to leave early, although if they are really busy and things are going well they might 'suggest' it. You can dig your claws in tho - the govt funds the 3 nights after a normal delivery so you are entitled to have them if you choose.

i left the next day after having Jake, and that day after having Taine. i hate hosptials!! My midwife wasn't too keen on leaving so soon after I had Jake, however she used to work with my nana - who's a nurse, so she knew i was in good hands. jake took to breastfeeding pretty easily too.

Doesn't help when you are stuck in with another mum either - not only do you feel bad if your baby crys and hers doesn't but also you just don't have that privacy or anything. Ayja fed all night every night for the first 2 nights - and the lady i was in with had a baby that didn't hardly cry at all! i felt so bad - and also felt i couldn't turn on the light cos i'd wake her. room sharing sucks!

We are lucky in Dannevirke - single rooms. And we are encouraged to stay 4 to 5 days. All the rooms (well, there are only 3 rooms, lol) have little TV's as well. I still felt bad when Hannah screamed cos I didnt want to wake up all the oldies in the rest of the ward.

Just had another thought - I bought myself a couple of pairs of new PJ's for after the baby was born, and it was so nice putting on something new after wearing the same old things for months.

I never needed any of the stuff I took to hospital (I had 3 bags LOLOLOL) except musli bars and water for Peter and clothes for Joey to come home in. We did go home 2 hours after he was born though so I'm not really one to ask.....

I had some nice new nighties for the same reason. Just don't forget they have to be easy access...

I got guys PJ's for that reason as well, I found them super comfy and they were also really light material so weren't too hot.
