I know we shouldn't eat raw eggs, ive had no problems with soft poached eggs or anything like that. but im not sure, i think as long as the egg is cooked it is fine. (but dont quote me on that )

I'm pretty sure it's meant to be thoroughly cooked. That said, i had soft yolks and was fine. But there is a minute chance of contracting salmonella

i dont think i would have eggs benedict, as its made with raw eggs, and then it tends to sit all day (if you are getting from a cafe). mind you i dont like egg based sauces anyway...so im probably bias..lol

I've had eggs bene a few times, and I just ask them to cook the eggs well - usually end up with hard yolks but I don't really mind

Hang on I just checked with my friend who is a chef and she confirmed the eggs in the sauce are cooked right through....so as long as it is all fresh then no worries...just her thoughts...

I had soft poached eggs all through my pregnancy!
Paws, if you ask them to cook them fresh then they should by fine! that one thing I made sure they did (I asked for everything to be made fresh for me, most places didnt seem to mind'

I have been reading the same thing about soft eggs too so have been avoiding them (even though runny yolks are the best!).
According to the NZ Food Safety website, pregnant women should have firm cooked eggs.. List is here:

Raw/undercooked egg is a salmonella risk. Salmonella can cause miscarriage, premature or still birth.

thanks for that! i thought it was harmful to baby, but someone else had said that there was no risk to baby, only us getting sick.... better to be safe anyway i reckon, i will be sticking to hard boiled eggs if i eat any eggs that is.... its only a short time to be without the food that we cant eat anyway... like deli meat... (which i have been craving this time around!) come september i can!!! woohoo!

In the place I usually go to though they'll cook it up on the hotplate almost right in front of you though, mind... I haven't had a kebab in ages anyway, but this post got me thinking about them.

Well I had a lamb one today and asked them to make sure it was all really cooked and hot...I don't think they did do the hotplate though so I'll swap places...
Apparently there is a good place near us that cooks on the hotplate...
I'm constantly amazed at what I've put in mouth to then find out I shouldn't! I thought avoid shellfish, chicken, deli foods/stuff sitting out...and I'd be fine...then one of my workmoates looked horrified that I said I was thinking of grabbing a vegetarian roll from across the road at the local cafe and informed me how I couldn't. I thought it would be fine as everything is fresh that day and they would even make one fresh for me but noooooooo.

This is going to sound bad, since I'm in a grumpy selfish mood, but don't take to heart too much what other people say you can and can't eat ! You know your own body better than they do, and I'm not saying to abandon *all* protocol or anything... but if having stuff made fresh is a no no, then I'd scream ! I have the cafe in my building make my sandwiches for me if I buy one from them, and haven't had any issues at all. I'm also wondering why we have to avoid chicken? I love chicken ! Anyway, it really all comes down to what *you* feel comfortable about eating and what you don't.
(end of rant)

Chicken is one of the main causes of food poisoning for pretty much anyone. The reason pregnant women are supposed to avoid it unless they know exactly when it was cooked (and that it has been reheated fully if necessary) is to avoid that nasty bacteria.
Having said that, I ate chicken (including KFC) often right through both my pregnancies. I just made sure I knew who cooked it and didn't buy any from a deli or cafe when I wasn't 100% sure it had been cooked that day.

I was really anti-chicken with Maya, but not coz it wasn't safe, more because the smell of it made me sick. But it is generally safe as long as it is cooked properly and eaten straight away. I wouldn't eat left over chicken either even if it was reheated just to be safe.
In saying that, when I was preg at christmas I wouldn't eat any takeaways unless they were vegetarian (didn't trust anyone else to cook meat for me). I'm such a geek.
Plus, when I was first preg with Maya I was so clueless, I didn't even know what listeria was, I craved luncheon sausage and cheese sanwiches and ate huge piles of them. I was horrified when I realised, but Maya turned out fine.
Sometimes I think I know too much, and it's not always a good thing...

???? that's funny Liz!
Hey Emma - i was the same - before i found out i was having Paris i would come home from work and make huge plates full of snax crackers with luncheon and cheese on them and scoff the lot - was sooo worried oncei found out why i was craving that stuff. Another annoying craving was for Ham sandwhiches - it was constant!

I'm so off meat of pretty much any variety. Chicken makes me barf, as does the smell of mince cooking. I can handle steak, as long as its a really good cut with no fat. Oh, and I know what you mean about the luncheon! I'm craving it terribly, even bought some in the groceries yesterday, but am too scared to eat it.
