We've bathed our baby in a baby bath for 4 months and tried her in the big bath tonight. It was rather awkward bending over the bathtub....trying to hold her with one arm and wash with the other.
We do have a bath seat but you nearly need to fill the entire bath to have her submerged....otherwise shes only up to her knees and sitting out of the water....looks freezing cold!!! Don't want to waste water by filling the entire bath.
Any tips on bathing techniques would be greatly appreciated.

Jump in with her! Its by far the easiest way, and enjoyable for you both! If your alone, lay some big soft towels on the floor, and lean over and wrap her up warm then leave her there a min while u dry yourself. Then pick her up for hugs and u will both be happy, dry and warm!

We did the same as Kellz and had the baby in the bath with us, in fact we did this from the start.
For about the last month i just put in about 2 inches of water and lay her on the bottom, she can then just splash about and flip herself over. I also put a warm wash cloth over tummy if she stays on her back.
As well as having her in the bath with you, have you tried a shower together??

DH still baths Isla in with him every night! They love it! Its even more fun now that we use bubble bath! he he! Isla and I love showers together,..ist soo relaxing,...for her anyway,..she nearly breaks my back now holding her for long!
Definatly agree with water Kicker said about the flannel on the belly. Isla loved being on her back,..and she learnt to float her body, with us only supporting her head/neck with our hand.

We fill it up so it just reaches his ears. Then plop him in and he has a good ole splash. I just sit on the floor and have one arm dangled over the side just in case. He's very safe and happy.

I mostly bathed with my boys too! Just seemed alot easier, then you can have it quite deep, and they can have a good ole splash around.
I used to sit he bouncinette thingy right beside the bath with his towel on it, then I could put him in that and wrap him up snug in the towel while I finished washing and got out and got dressed (DP was normally doing the dishes and didn't want to bother him! as he'd probably NOT finish the dishes!)
The other thing we did HEAPS was to bath Tyde in a bucket. Don't have to waste heaps of water, they are upright and warm, and it's GREAT fun! here's a pic of Tyde in his bucket bath! :) you can just use a 'normal' bucket, you must of course stay with them the whole time ! (excuse the dishes in teh background.. obviously DP was not on the job that night! hahaha)

Believe it or not I STILL bath Lucas in his baby bath and he is coming up 11 months ...
I attempted to make the change to the big bath about a month or so ago, 3 nights in a row he screamed bloody murder so I decided to go back to his baby bath until a later date.
He is a hefty sized boy too, but sitting in his bath seems to do the trick and we are saving water this way I figure. Our bubba bath was from Baby factory for $19.95 ...biggest one I have seen around! It's great.
Will be watching this thread like a hawk though to read what everyone else suggests!
Good Luck

We always just get in with Daniel. It's way more fun, whoever feeds him dinner gets in with him because we usually both have food all over us its an easy way to get clean
Saves your back and when they start moving around they get really slippery so its safer too

we take turns toget in with him. It is so much fun. Our baths dont quite fall into the relaxing before bed catagory though more like exhaust him beforebed. He loves the big bath!

well DH showers with ella...ive had a few with her but i go in bath with her. We have deep spa bath so no way i can lean over to her. She loves her bath and a few times ive filled it deep enough that she can dive under etc like at swimming. She loves it.

I agree with the hopping in with baby thing - heaps easier! Since I insist on my morning shower and DH has an evening one though, he showers Ella with him every night - occasionally they'll have a bath together. The shower works nice and easy for me since all I have to do is get Ella nakey, send her through and be ready with a towel when he shouts out for me to get her. Sweet deal!

I try and have a bath with her about once a week- she LOVES it. Otherwise we just have her in one of the bath seats and fill the bath up to the sides- found the seat soooooo useful and Ella loves it. Since it has been so warm lately and our bathroom gets the afternoon sun we haven't had any problems with her getting cold.

DH just baths her most nights in the bath.We don't even use that much water, but our house is really warm. We have the towelling layback thing (rather than the seat, though we have that too) but now she pretty much justs sits and splashes and crawls around int here.

I bought one of those towelling layback thingees today, so will give that a go.....its only for another 2-3 months really till she can sit up by herself....perhaps I should buy a BUMBO and put here in that submerged in the water!!! ha ha ha
Looks like bathing with her is the best and most suggested tip.....will give that a go.....
PEKEMOEMUM: - like the idea of a bucket! Cheap + Cheerful!

Daniel can sit up by himself but it's rather dangerous and more awkward than when he couldn't!
I also don't like the idea of those baby seat things (for when they can sit upright) - I read a bad article about them once and now won't go near them. I had thought of putting our bumbo in the bath but it specifically said not to lol

We had the same problem when we moved Luke to the big bath at 4 months.
My sister suggested putting 2 towels in the bath one foled over at the top to make a pillow (also keeps ears out of the water) then we laid Luke on them filled with enough water so he could kick and splash.
Now he's older we use one towel rolled at one end just to keep his ears/ head up he loves it. Its not slippery and is soft too. He can sit but it's safter laying down.He likes to kick.
Bending over the bath isn't too bad i just kneel besdie it. Sometimes we shower him but he loves the bath because he can kick and splash!!!

I was going to suggest the towelling thing they lie on too. Thats what we used until recently. Now he just lies in the bath with water up to his ears - and splashes it everywhere!! Much safer than sitting, as its a bit too slippery.
I did used to get in with him sometimes too, but I now use much less water with him lying flat in the bath.

my husband always jumped in the bath with my son..........as my boy was big he didnt fit in the baby bath for long......he adored his bath time and still does.........nothing better then splashing daddy..........he also has a shower with me but i know alot of babies dont like the water over there heads and the sound........mine just likes being special :)..............according to my mother (read a holic) when the male bathes the baby its suppose to be good for them like putting off some sort of (i dont know the word.....chemical reaction type of thing) dont know if that means holding the baby to bath or actually getting wet with the baby?!

Like most of the people here, we use the thing you use to bathe newborns (can't think what you call it!) We put a towel over the top and lie her on it! She can kick away to her hearts content. I hold her upright at times and splash her, she loves it!
I also jump in the bath with her and also take her into the shower! Great for bonding!!

I moved Han into a big bath quite early on and just used to lie her down and run a very shallow bath. She looooved squirming around in there.

We also just jump in with them. Often it is me, Quinn and Cohen and it is heaps of fun. When DH is not here to help I just pop the bouncer in the bathroom or the baby change mat while I get in and out.
This is how the ancient mama's bathe their babies too I was reading

I took a bath with Alexandria the first few times, then i got a dreambaby or is it safety1st bath seat so she could go in it by herself. Now she does that or sits in the shower on her own and loves it. She is hard to get out of the bath. She will also go in the big bath with shallow water on her own now so she can crawl around and play
