The worst part is that it still happens here, and that there are also people in NZ that perform female genital mutilation as well.

Random nurse talked to Regional Public health Refugee worker today. She went and saw the family today to tell them in their own language it is illegal and they will go to jail. She said they will listen to her as she is of the same ethnicity. Rnurse talked with the mums GP also and he rang and advised her of the options here in NZ. RNurse said she wont feel better till she goes back next week and sees the little willy in one piece....... "someone better hold her back if there is even so much as a scratch on that willy"!!!!
Random nurse wants to thankyou all for your support

ok soooo not with you on this one....having lived with a jewish family and seen their culture in usa - Bris' are performed every day over there by cultural persons doing it in a lounge with the entire family watching...no surgery no nothing...and free!!! it has to be done in jewish culture and is done within a set period time frame of the birth!
I think the stopping of this is absolute cultural intrusion on their culture - and is it illegal??? really as in the crimes act?
BTW female circumcision is TOTALLY different and done for cruelty reasons!!!!
sorry random nurse!!!

It is illegal in NZ unless for cultural reason. Jewish family is a totally different thing than what this family is doing. They have a 7week old who they are wanting done and BECAUSE it is costing money and not FREE then they have quite decided they will just do it themselves. Theirs is not for cultural reasons at all and reiterated but an african worked from their area. They will have all 3 kids taken from them if they pursue this. CYPS have been notified already and have comfirmed this will happen if anything goes ahead.
Sorry BS maybe you had the wrong end of the stick. This is totally seperate from jewish cultural reasons which Rnurse has had loads of dealings with too.

hmmm now that would be an interesting case to fight...would like to see them stick that one to them....has family had the other children done??? if so a precedent has been set....
they can still fight on grounds of cultural reasons for wanting it...whether it costs or not. Have to say i have been to an african naming ceremony where one was performed also...in auckland....happens every day im afraid.

I think , and correct me if I'm wrong, but the big thing is the DIY attitude. I have no problem with circumsion - esp. for cultural reasons, but loping it off yourself? ahhhh, nah
|
Posted By: mummy_becks

Also just a question but with the cultural reasons for getting it doen isn't it done quite early one like within the first week of a babies life???
I remember seeing on Maternity Ward a Jewish boy was born and they did the deed 4 days after he was born.

Yeah thats what I got from it too. I assume in Jewish situations they have someone who actually knows what they are doing and all the proper equipment.

Defintely a do it yourself attutude and VERY DANGEOUS if you dont know what you are doing. That baby could bleed to death, get an awful infection and die from that etc. They have a 3 year old who isnt done either. CHILDABUSE is what it would be classed by law plan and simple. GP has also documented and stated that if it goes ahead and they seek cutural reasons for this, it wouldnt stand up in court at all and he has history for caring for this family so would be in the know. 3year old was born here too.
As you are LIz I have nothing against circumcision BUT only when done properly in a safe environment by people who know what they are doing.

sorry but it sounded like her reasons for wanting it done were cultural ... now i am against circumcision but also against bullying and threats of jail and losing her kids sound like bullying to me... (i dont know if it is illegal and could only find a reference via google to the minister for child welfare asking for it to be made illegal in 2002).
i think if she was adamant about having it done then maybe she should have been pointed in the right direction to get it done properly and provided with helpful information.
just my 2 cents worth to add to the debate...

Didn't Kels say she had been told where she could get it done if she wanted it done? The issue is the home job, not the fact that its getting done. They only wanted the home job because they didn't want to pay to have it done. Its child abuse because they wouldn't be able to do it properly not because its getting done.

like i said i dont believe in circumcision at all, but it sounded to me like the lady was only given limited options and also there may be other things going on if she has an older son not circumcised. There also sounded like there may have been a communication barrier too.
i dont think she should be allowed to perform one herself at home but i am not sure if that is what she was really saying also... but i also wasnt present and will never really know...
either way it sounds like the nurse in question was rather traumatised by it all...

Yes most defintely given the appropriate information about where to go and waht to do and how to get it done etc, The issue is the home job and the fac they dopnt want to pay money.
Debs this isnt a debate either, the family can get it legally get it done under NZ laws just not for free im afraid, as it is classed as cosmetic surgery unless for medical or cultural reasons. The situation isnt cultural and how many people would be livid to see
"Baby dies after home job mums says" I couldnt afford to get it done as WINZ dont give me enough money so I did it myself".....OH PLEASE that would be a disater.
BTW in THEIR country (and im sorry but in NZ we and they should live by NZ rules) they go to an experienced person to do the deed not just at home b'cos the local Dr cost too much!!!

we had our son done professionally when he was young with no cutting involved.
Really feel for the nurse and the little boy. It has to be done right by medical professionals for the right reasons.

It's the anaesthesia I care about! It's almost like me saying that Hannah has a rotten tooth but it's gonna cost me a couple of hundred bucks to get it pulled so I'm just gonna pull it out myself No way! I'm sorry but if you immigrate to NZ then you live by NZ rules and if NZ rules says you can only get it done if you pay, then if it means that much to you, you pay!

Gosh that is hard alright. Hopefully the social worker can get through to her that this practise is not ok if done by yourself. I would most definitely have gotten cyfs involved. Makes me think of my little brother, my mum was thinking of having him circumcised but the doctor who did them wasn't in the days she was in hospital. gosh I'm sure he's (lil bro) is glad lmfao
