What did you do before you had kids? Or what are you qualified to do? Do you see yourself going back to it when your kids are older?

I worked in a call centre and I have desire to go back there again.

I'm currently working towards my teaching degree so will do that after all the kids are here.

well, as you know I did all my teaching qualifications and graduated last year. am loving being back at work, but feeling the stress of it all. my associate said that 50%of new teachers burn out by week 6. the job doesn's stress me too much, but all combined is huge! I am glad I'm back full time, but I don't think i would have coped with full time work when the boys were any younger. i feel a lot better about Taine going to daycare now he's older.

LOL BabyonBoard, I did the same thing - and ended up with a Maya!

I'm a journalist, I have a degree in International Communication and a Post Grad in Journalism.

I love my job, it's all I've ever wanted to do and I'm really enjoying the pregnancy/baby aspect of my current job so am considering doing some Post Grad papers in pregnancy and childbirth to make use of all the knowledge I've accumulated recently.

I was a Regional Account Manager for an Appliance Company. I have two papers to go on a business diploma, during my third to last paper I found out I was preggars with Lauren and I have no intention of completing it in the near future!

I studied part-time while also working full-time, my employer paid for me to study.

I have no intentions of going back to work in the near future, long term I intend to help out with DH's business.

I was a PR Manager and freelance events co-ordinator. Have a degree in Communications (PR major) and nearly finished a graduate diploma in Marketing (two papers to go - got pregnant first!).
I'm still doing a bit of freelance work, in events and PR writing mostly. Not sure what I'll do once the kids are a bit older but know that I won't go back to the same job I was in before getting pregnant. Love some aspects of my job, hate others. I'm taking this time as a SAHM as a chance to re-evaluate and maybe take a change of direction - the possibilities are endless! Will definitely be returning to work at some point, I miss it and we miss the income.

I worked part time 27.5hrs a week. I've been in the industry for about 7 years on and off between children and having a break.

Karitane Nurse training in the 70s and Nanny Centre course in 2002, if the Midwives council bring in a Midwives assistant course i would do it as i would love to work in a neonatal unit with my experience as a Karitane Nurse and Nanny but even with all my baby experience and having had three children (Kelly who is cailtynsmygirls) mum and two others the hospitals with shortage of midwives and nurses say you have to be a registered nurse which I think is ridiculous,
Karitanes/Nannies could take the pressure off , or I would love to see a Karitane type hospital in Auckland as Waikato hosp has there Mothercraft unit and Auckland needs something

I did a Bachelor of Management- accounting major, worked one year as a 'big huge long title that no one will understand what it means' for a business communication company which was challenging for the first 6 months but I was bored stiff for the last 6 months. I found out I was pregnant with Charlotte 5 months in If I hadn't of had her I would have moved on pretty quickly anyway I think.

I am now studying part time to be a Breastfeeding counsellor and am also starting a make up night course in September. I've always loved doing makeup and this paper follows on to a 2 year film and television course which is something I would love to get in to (doing make up- not in them). So hopefully once I am fully qualified with both I will be a part time Lactation consultant/Make up artist/Mum! I like the idea of have flexible jobs so I'm contributing financially but can still drop and pick the girls up from school and go on school trips etc.

What part of the insurance industry are you in Sarah Beth? I'm just being nosy . I'm a Sales Support person in insurance, which I can't see me doing forever, and studying ANZIIF (Australia & New Zealand Institute of Insurance & Finance) papers...my manager is hoping I may be interested in taking his underwriting position in a year or two, which would come in handy because I could have flexible hours and work from home by the time children come along.

I was an Account Underwriter for an Insurance Company and am still a Senior Associate of the Insurance Institute. Loved my job, but don't know if I want to go back to it anytime soon.   I had also hoped that once I got to this point in my career I could have some flexible hours etc, but pretty much got told that in the position I was in I could only do my job fulltime or not at all! I wasn't willing to go back fulltime after waiting this long for Sam, so officially resigned last week!!

I am planning to finish my business degree through Massey extra-murally majoring in Libary & Information systems. I am a qualified Librarian now but hope that if I get my degree I could run a school library, that way it would fit in nicely with Samantha once she goes to school

I work for Maritime New Zealand in the Marine Pollutiuon Response division. We train regional councils and private industries in responding to marine oil spills (soon to be hazardous substances as well). I've been in my job about 5 1/2 years. First 18mths of that was the Administrator, got bored and threatend to leave so they created a position for me and now I work in the Planning & Training section. Just co-ordinated a huge training review programme that was implemented last July and is going really well (very proud of myself ) still working on lots of new initives to go with the new regieme. Mostly work on new projects so every day is different.

No formal qualifications - I'm not the studying type but lots of "on the job" training.

Lot's of insurance people!!

I'm a Legacy Specialist in Customer Services for and insurance and investment company. I handle complex enquiries and complaints and also get recruited for projects (am currently on one migration, one annual mailout and one system improvement project). Have just applied for a transfer to the Data Intergrity team as a Technical Specialist.

I'm paid well and really good at my job but at this stage I don't see myself doing this forever. I'm just not sure what I want to do when I grow up (other than win lotto).

Have thought about becoming a child birth educator.

I'm a primary school teacher. I still have one year left of teaching before I get my full registration (have to do it within 5 years), so I'm probably gonna go back next year to get that. Hopefully can get a job sharing position 2 days a week. I don't want to go back to work, I just want to be a SAHM, but it would be such a waste if I don't get it! We want to have more kids, so it'll be easier to do it with only one at home.

This year once my PPL is finished I'm looking at doing some tutoring to pay the bills. Then once the kids are at school I might look at going back into teaching. Maybe relieving to start with cos there's not all the extra work like reports and meetings and planning etc!

I'm a neonatal nurse. Traine din nursing started before the kids came along and i carried on studying throughout 2 pregnancies and while the girls were babies. Am coming up to finishing my 2nd year out already.

Am unsure what i plan to do, probably stay at this for at least another 5 years or more, previously thought maybe might like plunket nursing, or midwifery, but get realllly irritable with the social issues side of things which i guess would really be a lot more involved in those jobs since they involve a longer term relationship with the families and going into their homes sometimes.

Suzieq i hear you about the whole shortage thing.. but seriously we have 3 enrolled nurses in our unit and they are wonderful but because of their lack of training in the icu type of stuff they are relegated to feeders and growers, which may be fine for some but would get a bit snoozy-boring if it were me all the time. They really aren't treated as nicely as they should be for all their years of experience... as one said to me, she has been there over 20 years, she knows for a fact that if she left, they would not re-employ her if she were to come back simply because she's not a registered comprehensive nurse. Sucks really but i can see it from their side too in that having more nurses that are trained in the full on hard stuff means the workload gets shared a bit more evenly when you get the real sickies in.

Journalist here, too, as you all know.  I did my BA in English and Written Communication, then worked for a consulting company as their online editor. That didn't last, so I jumped ship and went to a software company, where I wrote software manuals for two years before moving here to do my MA in English. After I got that in 2003, I worked for the University of Auckland as the Business School's web content manager. But I got bored, so I jumped ship again and landed at New Zealand Woman's Weekly as a sub-editor. Now, that was more like it! Of course, just when I started to get into a groove with work and a career path, I found out I was pregnant... and everything changed. It took a huge leap of faith to quit that job and stay home with Em -- but it was just after I made the decision to quit that a friend of a friend told me about OHbaby!, and that Emma was going on maternity leave to have twins. Luckily, they kept me on after she came back from leave -- and now I feel like I'm on the right path again, in a big way. This is exactly what I want to be doing with my life right now.

I can see myself staying in media down the line -- print media, preferably. I love the pace and the intellectual stimulation. I love deadlines... especially the sound that they make when they go whooshing past.  I think I'll also pick up the PhD study again -- I've put it on hold while I work on other projects.Mostly, I just want all of you to call me Dr Katherine.

Qualified in social work and that's where my career's been - I haven't worked full-time in it for a while now, but keep taking these lovely short-term part-time contracts every now and then, and I love it.  I'd consider working in writing or visual art, but think some training along the lines of journalism would help first and I don't want to study full-time, or for years on end.  And I think I'll keep art as a 'me' thing so that I'll still enjoy it as a hobby rather than be pressured by a need to make money from it.  At the end of the day, I still get a fire in my belly for some social work based goals so I think I'll be a lifer!

LOL Katherine!!

I am a Physiotherapist. I have only ever worked in hospitals, mainly do acute respiratory which is post-surgery and intensive care patients. I graduated 4 years ago, but havent really worked that much - I worked for about 18 months fulltime then went on maternity leave with Hannah, then after a year off I went back part-time just doing a couple of weekends. Did that for a year now I maternity leave again!! Not really sure its what I want to do, but it pays pretty well (esp weekends) and I dont know if I've given it enough of a chance yet. But I need to decide which area I want to specialise in (maybe neurodevelopmental paediatrics or hand therapy, neither of which I can do in Dannevirke!), or a different path altogther... Been a dilemna of mine for a while now.

kawww there is a grad diploma in early intervention at Auckland Uni to specialise in working with children under 5 with special needs, qualf to be an early intervention teacher. You have to be EcE qualf which you are and have min 2 years teaching experience. It's 2 years part time but the structure is changing because used to be just dipolma now grad so lenght may have changed too.

I have the B.Ed (teaching) and full teacher reg. I also didn't want Luke to come with me. He is in the under 1 room and so is not directly with me. It's actually working out really well I can see him at breaks and share his day while he's not too attached to me.

If you want any info about the dipolma pm me ... Ohh aslo there used to be schlorships avaliable unsure now though. I am half way through it put it on hold to have luke.

I completed my Bachelor of Teaching and Learning (Primary) just before Jack was born (graduated 19 Dec and waddled across the stage to get my certificate!), and was also working part-time as a deeds clerk at a law firm in town. I'm the Office Admin for Michael Hill in Blenheim, currently on maternity leave till june. I have been there coming up 5 years, andin the office for 2. I worked on the floor prior to having Jake, whioh I loved, but really didn't want to do after baby. THey offered me the office job to lure me back 6 months into a 12 month maternity stint, as I was keen to move in there, into a more senior role with more responsiblity, and sitting on my ass all day, lol.

Love love love my job, but don't know if financially it will be worth retuning, as we have our own business, so according to the government, we are rich and don't qualify for childcare subsidies. We will see.

Prior to working for MHJ, I was worked in hospo for ages, manily as a chef, but waitered and bar tended to keep my hours up over the winter as well. For me, it was defiantly a job more suited to the single life, lol.

I'm hopefully going to do some part time study next sememster so I can cross credit the papers for a midwifery degree which I plan to start next June.

I'm a Software Engineer Currently on maternity leave until May. Then I 'might' go back part time of which most of it I can do from home. Don't see myself going back full time anytime soon.

My long term plan is to go more towards sports massage and reflexology though.

I'm a Business Analyst/Test Analyst for a software company. On Maternity leave for a year and trying to decide if I'll go back or stay home and contract later. I think I might go back - I love my work. Before that I worked in a smaller software company in a kind of 'jack of all trades' position - project management, testing, account management, HTML monkey, business analyst. It was great because you got to work from beginning to end on projects.

In my former life (prior to completing my degree) I was in Hospo, Airlines & Retail.

I was an electrician and still an electrician. Although for a little time I was a process control/electronics engineer (now doesn't that sound fancy?)

Completed a BBS (open major as I could never decide what exactly I wanted to do). Before I got pregnant I was a buyer/category manager for a major stationery/book retailer and then when I found out i was pregnant left to work in a smaller business as a product development manager (basically developing and sourcing products overseas). Went back to work  part-time at the start of this year in the same role.
