I've read it's best to avoid peanuts during pregnancy in case baby is born with a peanut allergy.

I love peanut butter! How many of you are avoiding peanuts?

I didn't bother avoiding them when I was preggers with Daniel. In fact I craved them and ate a truck load of them. We have no history of peanut allergy in our family so I felt fine doing this.

Awesome! In these early stages and whirring hormones, I'm finding it hard to decipher what is 'scaremongering' and what is good pregnancy advice.

So much to learn!

Not me but I don't eat them much anyways. I think you only need to avoid peanuts if you have family history of peanut allergy

i havent been able to touch peanut butter but chocolate with peanuts or any nuts thats a different story! yummy! thats my treat and often biggest craving... mmm, dreaming of a fruit and nut chocolate now.... lol.

i have heard to try to limit nuts too, i have been pretty good, i think it would be worse if there is a known family history of peanut allergy? i know there isnt on my side but dont know much about hubby's side.

I think the message has been changed from no peanuts to avoid if family history of allergies, so as DH is allergic to a bunch of stuff including peanuts (mild though not like life and death) I've been avoiding them in general. I did 'slip up' the other day as we were all out of Vegemite (luxuary here in the UK as pay through the roof for it) so in protest I had peanut butter, it was sooooooooooooooo good!!!!

I ate peanut butter and nut bars almost every day when pregnant and Elle is fine with peanuts (it's the only spread she will eat).

As the others said it depends on your family history and your personal choice.

I love peanut butter but haven't been eating it because at the beginning it just tasted gross. But then I thought maybe I'd bought one of the made in china versions, so next shop I am going to get more and hopefully it tastes alright! Have been eating different nuts but no family history of allergies so hoping it shouldn't be a problem

I saw an allergy specialist (Dr Allan Liang) and did an allergy prevention course with him when I was pregnant with the gremlins, his advice is to only avoid peanuts if a parent, sibling or child has peanut allergy. He says the jury is still out on whether peanut proteins can cross the placental barrier and cause sensitisation prior to birth. If you have a history of allergy tho it is imperative to avoid peanuts whilst breastfeeding as food proteins can pass into breastmilk, and also to avoid any creams, lotions, bath oils etc. that are nut based. Be careful too, my Sienna had a nasty reaction to plain old zinc and castor cream which on closer inspection was based on peanut oil.

I ate peanuts throughout both pregnancies *hmmm snickers* though neither DH or I have any family with peanut allergies. I found when bf Ollie he would come up with little red spots around his mouth/chin/cheeks when I had been eating peanuts (would never have noticed if DH hadn't of pointed them out ) so I did try to limit them when bf. Now Ollie loves peanut butter and doesn't have any reaction at all.

Is there any relation to eating peanut butter during pregnancy and asthma? I thought I read something about it the other day but then I could just be making it up -Baby Brain

I'm not sure Daizy, but it's an interesting thought, might go Google it. Good to keep up to date with such things!

Kawwww -almonds should be fine, they aren't related to peanuts.
