Help! The girl I'm babysitting has headlice so in 1/2 hour (when she goes back) I'll be letting her mum know... Does anyone know whether it's best to just go to a chemist or if you get cheaper stuff on prescription? (They will have a CS card.) -------------  |

we had lots of foster kids and they all came with them............the best and cheapest treatment is the comb..........but you have to use it correctly.....get the one for $10 (i think) with the thin wire one not plastic and have a piece of paper......comb hair hit it on to the paper.......just do this morning and night instead of using anything else and disinfectant on everything........we tried everything and found that alot of the ones for younger kids had way too much chemicals in and not even we could stand it in the room let alone the kid with it in there hair.......and then it was back again.........if you do want to use one its in a blue (or pale blue a) and white tube i think it starts with P.......that was the best for the price. how old is the girl? cause if she is over 5 then there isnt any difference in OTC and docs...........actually by the time you pay to see the doc it will be cheaper OTC........hope this helps ------------- http://lilypie.com">  http://lilypie.com">

Just go to the chemist and get stuff from there. ------------- I was a puree feeder, forward facing, cot sleeping, pram pushing kind of Mum... and my kids survived! |

Maya had them over Xmas, I think she got them from daycare and I got some stuff called Moov which killed them but I had a bugger of a time getting the eggs out. I ended up spending $30 on a special nit conditioner which helps loosen the egg glue and after an hour and a half of combing her hair was finally clean.
The treatments are expensive but having been teased as a kid for having nits I am anal about making sure Maya doesn't have them. ------------- Maya Grace (28/02/03)

omg i loove the moov stuff, eucalyptus is very strong smelling but great. depends on how much $$ they have but then also, how much they don't want them back as sometimes the shampoos etc aren't quite as effective. but them alot of people just use that and don't spend the time to remove all the nasties. Wet-combing is really important, we did this before we treated to get rid of all visable ones, and let the treatment stuff kill anything that was (hopefully not) left over. and re did the combing with each treatment.
we ended up spending about $60 all up because you are supposed to do the treatment again after 7 and 14 days, and the stuff cost $20 a bottle. Wet-combing works well to, wet the kids hair, I did this with a spray bottle, and use a very fine toothed comb, i pretty much did it strand by strand almost, and you can see where they are and use fingernails to strip the nit off the hair, or like i did, grab the individual hair and pull it out.. i know nasty mum but some would just not come off. Some places say not to worry about washing bedding and hats etc, but i did, all the bedding and their hats and the clothes they had been wearing too..... I now check nearly every morning when doing their hair and when i brush at night time too. lol.. oh, and T, how nice of them to know their child has headlice and not tell you when they leave her with you to babysit.  ------------- Janine and her 2 cool chicks, Paris & Ayja

I have also been told to use a bottle of cheap conditiioner on the hair (the whole bottle) and then cover the hair with plastic for about an hour and then wash it out then comb. Meant to get rid of them. Haven't had the nits here yet. ------------- I was a puree feeder, forward facing, cot sleeping, pram pushing kind of Mum... and my kids survived! |

I saw a thing on the TV that showed using hair straighteners as a chemical free alternative, it kills the adults and eggs and gets right down to the scalp. would definitely be the route I would take, I hate chemicals.
I think if there are still some live ones you could get them. -------------

Little off topic... BUT...how can you hate chemicals? Everything in this world is a 'chemical'.
Anyhoo back on topic now.... With the nits thing... I sympathise... my friend's 4 year old had them and then I got them from her (and then my mum got them just to make things worse) - This was about 4 weeks ago. Just got whatever was at the pharmacy, and it did the trick... (I was so ickyfied about having bugs in my hair I just barked at my husband to go down and get the nearest thing no matter how expensive) On a wee side note...possibly a bit TMI - I have a microscope (just one of those wee saliva ones) and put an egg and also a live lice (albeit paralysed from the stuff) and EW. Lol. Was fascinating though, until the bug started moving again! Could see it's wee heart and guts moving about!

Ha Ha what a dag you are Lou.I like your attitude!!things like that fascinate me too!!!!!Well much to my horror two weeks ago was bathing my kids and saw somthing dark in my lil boys white blonde hair.and on closer inspection found couple of lice and nit eggs.then on daughter too!!!!yuk.thought my kids would never end up getting them...dumbarse eh!!anyway I freaked out and used neighbours nit comb that night and then next day to chemist I went.our chemist makes up there own solution.basically its meths without the purple.It really did nuke the buggers and we havent seen anything since.My boys school is rampant with nits at the mo.and teachers arent aloud to check for them so basically Caleb could end up catching them again and again because couple parents arent treating there kids.sux. ------------- Caleb 15/11/02 Brooke 14/11/05 |

It does suck aye, Paris's daycare has them go through every once in a while and it's hard cos it tends to be the kids that have older siblings already at school that bring them in and pass them on. Paris is now well-versed in not sharing headbands, combs, or even head dress-ups cos they tend to take them off and give it to their friend (good sharing) but so easy to pick them up.
I never thought my kids would get them either then to find them in PAris's and have a look in ayja's and find them too.  albeit, ayja only had a couple. but ick ick ick------------- Janine and her 2 cool chicks, Paris & Ayja
