I tried everything to bring on labour!!
I had a massage the Wednesday before I was due and asked the woman to massage the acupressure points for inducing labour. I can't tell you whether this helped or not but I did give birth two days later (5 days early).
I also ate copious amounts of fresh pineapple. I drank lots of rasberry leaf tea. I went walking regularly. I ate spicy food every day. I also made a point of... ahem .... having an ..... O (TMI?)

Oo I did this! I don't know if it did anything to bring on labour, but it was AWESOME as pain relief during it. I had a 7 hour labour (from first niggles) and had no other pain relief at all! We started the accupressure as soon as the contractions started getting a bit painful.
We got all the information online, from a nz site... There's a booklet you can download and print.
http://acupuncture.rhizome.net.nz/acupressure/download.aspx - Accupressure booklet
I honestly think it's awesome, it helped heaps in my labour. Can especially recommend the comb one (start this as soon as labour starts.. it releases endorphins, which makes you feel less pain), the points on the hips during transition, and the other points on the back and shoulders. I found that in early labour, it helped heaps to bounce on my swiss ball while DH put pressure on the points on my lower back.
It's worth spending some time beforehand with whoever is gonna be doing the acupressure on you, so they can figure out where the points are and stuff. Maybe even mark them up with vivid. And then keep the booklet with you during labour if they need to refer to it (as we did, cos there's different points to do different things).
DH hadn't done acupressure before this, so anyone can do it. And he loved it too, cos well being the typical man, he liked to be able to do something practical. And he said it made him feel more involved and that he could help lessen my pain in some way. Which he did.. it was still sore, but I really noticed when he wasn't pressing on the points as it was alot more painful!
Any questions feel free to ask

I also used accupressure during labour and it worked really really well. I would strongly recommend downloading that booklet and using the techniques in it.
It also a great way for your partner to feel like he is 'doing' something to help with the pain.
I couldn't recommend it enough

Good to hear that acupressure worked for pain during labour. I printed the booklet for DH and the week I went into labour I asked DH if he'd read the booklet and he said he figured he'd read it when I went into labour "but what if I have a really quick labour and you don't have time" I said to which he responded - well if it's that quick you won't need it anyway. Cheeky man.
Pleased to say I managed to have a drug free natural birth anyway but love the idea that your partners felt more involved in the labour. Mine was fabulous throughout but he told me later he felt useless and excess to requirements.

*bumped for March mummies*
Just a note we used this during labour as well and I managed to cope really well with the pain and only used the gas for about an hour during the transition phase - and I still wanted Stu to apply pressure to the point on my lower back. Oh and the comb was really good too.

I got taught the induction points during my antenatal yoga class - will definitely try them! I've also been told there's a really good homeopathic remedy that you take from 36 weeks (several times a week). The MW of a friend swears by it - she's recommended it for over 5 years and in that time has never needed to induce anyone who's used it.

Our teacher at antenatal wouldn't give us info on this as she said too many people try it before they're due and she was sure it could bring on early labour. Guess I can see her point.

Just for info re: bringing on early labour... there's a couple of points that can be used to induce labour, but I've been told they'll only work if your body is ready. We stayed well clear of those points anyway, except for when I was about a week before my due date lol

yup, tried the labour induction points every night once i got to about 38 weeks, and she was still 9 days overdue! also had a pregnancy massage or 2 with emphasis on the induction points! the accupressure points for pain relief during labour were actually more helpful. I think the labour-inducing points may work if your body is ready (as arohanui said), but sometimes there is no getting the baby out before it's own sweet time!

Lol I'm guessing you didn't use it Flissty, seeing as Daniel was 2 weeks late!
I used 5W capsules, and while they didn't make Natalie come on time, I think they may have contributed to my fast active stage of labour....

LOl, just seen my comments resurrected. NOTHING WORKS. Daniel was 2 weeks late, and only arrived after 4 days of hard drugs (i.e induction) - nothing was moving his bony ass!
He ended up being sucked out w ventouse.
But anyways ....It's called pre birth mix - relief 30c. pulsatilla, cimicifuga, gelsemium, caulophyylum.
I've suggested to DH that I could start taking it now, that way when I have #2 (in about 3 years), it might come on time.

My antenatal leader just emailed thru alternative pain relief, and acupressure was one of them.
I think I'm going to try this. I'll make DH read that booklet.
I like the idea of using a marker to mark the points, then it takes the guess work out of it on the day!

Hmm Amber I just clicked on the link and it worked for me... then had to click 'download'.....?

I printed out the booklet and tried a few points a LOT during the end of my pg, I was 8 days over. I'm not totally convinced it works to induce labour, but no harm in trying either.
As for during labour, I can't really give any insight as to whether it helps as pain relief as I forgot all about it! Luckily I had a straightforward labour gave birth with no drugs or interventions

OK so here's a question for those who have used this for pain relief -
When your/DH are practising how do you know if your hitting/pressing the right spot????? i mean if you slightly off it will be useless wont it?? I read that you don't feel the full effects of the relief until your actually in labour so how do you practice???
|
Posted By: arohanui
Date Posted: 13 April 2009 at 8:55pm
We didn't practise at all - DH just looked at the diagram and pressed and I told him if it felt ok or not! I don't know how I 'knew' it was right, it just felt better and the pain wasn't as bad.
If you know someone who's a physio or has done acupressure, you could visit them beforehand just to get them to check your DH has got the pressure points right.
I really recommend the comb one too, that helped heaps - also cos it gave me something to do when I had contractions.
