We bought a new oven just over a week ago (Gas hob, electric oven). We don't have gas on our street so we had to get a hole drilled through the kitchen wall outside to a gas bottle.
This has to be done by a plumber/gas fitter.
We also needed a sparky to install the electric part of it..
So, between the two of them they racked up 3.5 hours labour + parts = $600!!!
Ouch. That doesn't include the gas bottle or the gas we filled it with!!
We saved $800 on the oven itself, so we made $200, I guess...
But still!

That's what I said to DH
Unfortunately, I like wine too much and if he stopped making it my supplies would dwindle

LOL my DH is a plumber and we used to run our own company. I swear they earn their money with all the grumpy customers they have to attend to! We are out of the game now, thank God.

I guess every job has it's perks and, well, unperks!

Lulu - I think the call-outs would drive me crazy... and all the grumpy people.

I think midwives must be the same lol, I'd HATE being woken up every five minutes by paranoid preggy ladies, and having to get up and go deliver babies at all hours of the night. I heart my sleep!

Oh yes I agree Emma! I reckon midwives would have to be very passionate about their job. I tell you it's quite hard to be passionate about plumbing, lol!

And I can assure that the electrician would have got less than half the hourly rate that the company charged you, unless he was self employed of course.

Well if you want to convince ya partners to change i had an doin his papers and he sucked at theory so i completed about 4 of his gas fitter/plumbing papers getting above 90% on each one.  A lot of the papers were comonsense and maths questions. Funny how some people like my ex can just look at some sizes and know an answer but not be able to show the workings behind it.

Oh i forgot to mention tho that he only earned like $17 an hour but the boss charged him out at like $60 an hour so the money isnt really that great unless you run the business.  I know he was to get a big pay increase once he was qualified but it was still nowhere near the amount he was charged out at maybe $25 an hour i think

But don't forget that by the time the business owner pays ACC and company tax they lose about 50% - so it's not as good as it looks!

My friends Mum is really disappointed in her for not marrying someone useful like a sparky or plumber. Poor Johnie works in IT and earns mega bucks in London but he will always be a disappointment to MIL. and you can understand why with stories like this. I know I'm in the wrong job!

I work for a Trade Services company and I do the payroll, and I can assure you that the boys do not earn the best money. The apprentices are on $12.50 and the highest paid gasfitter is on just over $30 and hr.

We charge them out at between $55 and $65 an hr.

P.S Charly - we're about to get our gas hob plumbed in (and sink taps) tomorrow. I'll let you know what Auckland prices are like

Nice score on the oven! What is it?
I think we paid $1500 for a Westinghouse wall oven (1 + 1/2)

Mines playing war games at the moment so def the wrong trade.

But mine is pretty good with doing stuff around the home so we only need to get a plumber or gas fitter in to do the work we need doing but they are the most expensive . BIL is an electrician so he does the work for us for free .

I was a puree feeder, forward facing, cot sleeping, pram pushing kind of Mum... and my kids survived!
