Its a swab that you do yourself - totally fine. ------------- I was a puree feeder, forward facing, cot sleeping, pram pushing kind of Mum... and my kids survived! |

I have a friend who's wee girl died from sepsis as a result of Strep B when she was only a few hours old. IMO the swab is well worth the discomfort. -------------  Maya Grace (28/02/03)

I didn't find it uncomfy at all. I thought it would be like a smear test but it isn't at all. You get what looks like a long cotton bud, squish it around to collect some of your vjay "juices" (not scrape it against the top like the smear does), poke it a tiny bit up your backside (I think some mw's say yes, some no for this bit?) and put it back in it's own little container.
I had strep B with Kryssi and even though my waters broke early we had no probs with it. ------------- |

Yeah Im onto fortnightly visits now so i will ask her when i see her in teo weeks on the 18th about it. **Im quite nervous about anything to do with 'down there" as I have discomfort during sex etc and i havent had a smear test before cos of the discomfort, the thought of metal prongs up there makes me feel sick with fear  and child birth scared the crap out of me too! lol

It's not a metal prong, it's just a swab and you don't have to put it 'up there' you just swab the vagina itself, so not too scary. ------------- Maya Grace (28/02/03)

i had three sets of swabs even that wasnt so bad(not much fun though) but yeah you get used to it and at least i already knew i had strep b so just had the antibiotics..as Maya said its worth it.. ------------- Mum to two amazing boys! |

i have been wondering about this too lately sheza, my sister was given antibiotics in her last labour because of strep and she didnt even have a swwab done! lol now im really confused, is there another way to tell if you have it or something?
i had a friend who went into prem labout at 33 or 34 weeks and had it too. is it routine in some places? or countries? cause i reckon it should be here to be tested. |

unfortunately not everyone does it here...and they certainly don tin other countries... and the other problem is they used to not give you the antibiotics if you were positive and then negative(it can come and go) but now they give it to you if you tested positive at all.. as far as i know you have to have a swab to diagnose it..i had swabs done and they found cells that can cause prem labour and thats how i knew i had it ....... my friend in HK wasnt even allowed to be tested..she asked about 4 times...:( ------------- Mum to two amazing boys! |

Its all a bit airy fairy AYE?I am a carrier of Strep B...always get infections when run down or have wounds but has not ever been bought up in either of my pregnancies by either midwives????...was on antibiotics with Blake in Labour as Waters broke and drained all away and then nothing happened so maybe that was why...who knows?

maybe Kelpa..generally they give everyone whose waters have broken the same antibiotics.. I've never had it picked up before never had any issues(always really healthy hardly ever get rundown or sick).. but certainly had it the whole pregnancy....very strange you normally have it but didnt get it picked up during pregnancy...i ended up having the antibiotics and then a c section but glad i had them.. and my mw gives the antibiotics in all future pregnancies too.. ------------- Mum to two amazing boys! |

i had strep B with Brianna but doing the swabs wasn't a problem since you do them yourself.so i had antibiotics while i was in labour every 12 hours and i had a long labour. i will be tested at 37 weeks this time round for it my midwife has said. ------------- mother to Brianna, Amelia & Mathew. http://lilypie.com">

I guess it's not the done thing with my midwife. I was always so preggy-brained at the mw visits that I'd forget to ask about it. Sheza, as for getting used to all of that kind of thing after childbirth...I agree! I was so scared of needles and things before that. But now I'm like "Oh, you need to stick me with that giant needle? Sweet! Can I watch?"

I watched my friend getting an epi put in and nearly passed out despite the fact that I am fine with blood and needles and have had two epis myself!
I never had the strep B swab with Maya or the gremlins, it wasn't routine back then but it is becoming more and more and my midwife now does it as well. ------------- Maya Grace (28/02/03)

My sister worked in SCBU, People can test at what ever stage and pregnancy and it may or maynot show, like if you test positive for it at 36 weeks it may be negative at 40weeks or vice versa, but def ask your Mw, if it is positive they give you antibiotics in labour ------------- http://lilypie.com" rel="nofollow">

i asked my mw about this the other week and she said it is becoming less common to test for it now and she would if i wanted to but otherwise she wasnt too worried about it. i think if you had a history of it then you should tho. ------------- http://www.myfitnesspal.com/weight-loss-ticker">

i tested pos for strep b during a routine smear, and the doctor said there was no point treating it unless i was pregnant, so once i was pregnant, told the midwife i had tested pos for it, she didnt redo the test, even though it had been 1 yr since i had tested pos, had the antibotics during labour....and because of this i will need to test for it again when i get pregnant even though ive tested neg for it since.
