Does birth weight depict what size a child is going to be as they get older/later on in life ...does their birth weight and height really have any bearing on future patterns?
Has there been any studies into this, can anyone vouch for this being true with their children? ------------- Single Mum to a darling wee boy of 3 years :) |

I don't know of any study....but I do know that I was a pretty big baby (parents have photos of me at 5 months with Dad commenting that I need to wear a bra already) and am quite slim now. Ella is quite a big baby (80% for weight and height), but since DH and I are slim I would be very surprised if she was bigger later on in life. ------------- Mum to Ella (5) and Tom (2) |

Believe it or not, low birthweight babies have a higher incidence of obesity in later life. No one is sure whether it is a nature thing (the body storing fat to make up for being smaller at birth) or a nurture thing (people tend to want to "feed up" smaller babies/kids. I had quite a long conversation with Dr Cameron Grant (paed specialist at Starship) about it when Maya was a baby.
My babies were all high birthweight for gestation (97th %ile) and are now between th 25-50th for their ages. They find their own centile and tend to stick to it. -------------  Maya Grace (28/02/03)

I think that would be an interesting topic to be researched. I would think maybe somewhere like Ak Uni or Otago may have done it. Have a look on there websites. ------------- I was a puree feeder, forward facing, cot sleeping, pram pushing kind of Mum... and my kids survived! |

Hmm, not that I am aware of?
DD#1 was 8lbs 3oz and has always been a pretty chubby tall girl since birth (still is at 6yrs even though she is very active and eats well) DD#2 was 9lbs 6oz and is now the skinniest most petite little girl at 20 months. I bought her a pair of "skinny jeans" in size 1 for her 1st bday (a cotton on kids treat) she is almost 2yrs and they still fall down on her!! I know of quite a few people who were big babies (over 10lb) and are really petite now, so no I don't think a babies birth weight determines their size later on. I certainly hope not anyway as Elle was 9lb15 (she was pretty much on the very top line at birth and currently sits around the 75th percentile for height and weight) ------------- http://lilypie.com">  http://lilypie.com">

my 9lb 8 bubba is long and lean still....who knows? DH was short and skinny and now look at him (for those of you unfortunate to have met him LOL!)

My 2 are both quite stocky now (75% for length and weight) but were average (7lbish) at birth.
I was 8lb something and so was ben and we are both pretty lean now although we were both really fat fat babies. Out of my sisters I was the fattest baby but the smallest now. My little sister was huge (nearly 10lbs) and she is quite tall and in proportion for her height not skinny but not fat IYGWIM |

The PN at our 15 month visit (DD was 17 months, however) said that this is the age that you can start to tell how their weight will be as a kid, based on what they weigh now...not sure about later in life. ------------- Mum to two gorgeous girls! |

| Just from experience, Han was in one of the higher percentiles and stayed that way for her 'babydom' but is now streeeetching out. No idea what percentile she is as we haven't been to plunket for a trillion years but she's definitely a bean pole! |
