This may sound really silly but how do I know when Bella is hungry? Her sign used to be sucking on hands/fingers etc but now she does that all the time just for fun. At the moment I pretty much feed her when she gets grizzley but that means quite often I feed her when I probably dont need to. ------------- http://lilypie.com">   http://lilypie.com">

| I've started to wonder this too as Jack loves sucking in his hands constantly and I kept shoving a bottle in his mouth thinking it was that! At the moment I'm just having to keep track of 3-hourly feeding during the day (or whenever he starts grizzling after that) and if he gets grizzly before I just check his nappy, cuddle, play etc to try and drag it out and give him food as a last resort. Sounds horrible but otherwise I'd never be able to get anything done and he's not actually hungry anyway. |

| I ran into the same problem and started to just watch the clock and make sure it was no longer than 3 hours. If he started getting grizzly shortly after a feed I would assume it was probably not hunger but if it was 2-3 hours I'd feed him. |

Sam used to poke her tongue out or lick her lips a bit when she was getting hungry. Otherwise I would offer her a finger and see if she really sucked on it - that was always a good indication!! :) ------------- http://lilypie.com">

That's why I like the sleep, feed, play thing - you just feed the babes when they get up! In saying that, until recently that has meant I've been feeding 2 hourly most of the time. I'm now moving to 3 hourly, and starting to learn her hungry cues - mostly she starts to cry and can't be fobbed off with any distraction. ------------- http://lilypie.com">  http://lilypie.com">

interesting about the 3 hourly thing.. everyone tells me i should do that.. Ethan does 3-4 hour sleeps(thats not from beginning of feed) and he is fine.. people keep telling me to wake him up..but he wakes up fine and i feed him then?how come its ok during the night to leave them more than 3 hours? if i wake him day or night he hates it!!
obviously he doesnt always do 3-4 hours..growth spurts etc change that and like today he woke after 45 mins after our walk and then it was 2 hours between feeds so i fed him and now he's back asleep again.. i guess they are all different:) ------------- Mum to two amazing boys! |

kawwww from what I've been told, if you leave bigger gaps between feeds during the day baby may wake more often at night as they haven't had enough milk during the day to "stock up" so they can go a bit longer at night. I'm sure this doesn't apply to all babies though. From day one I have fed Liam 3 hourly during the day & on demand at night. He now goes anything up to 10 hours overnight between feeds but this definitely wasn't the case when he was much younger.
Liam has started to suck his hands & fingers lately too. I don't think it's necessary a sign of hunger but more a stage he's going through. I will just stick to the 3 hourly routine but feed sometimes sooner if he's grizzly & nothing else seems to settle him. -------------
