Subject: 6 week scan - no fetal pole
Date Posted: 12 March 2008 at 11:16am
I just had my 6 week scan and it showed a gestational sac of 6 weeks, a yolk sac but not fetal pole or heartbeat.

My hcg was 499 about 2 weeks ago so I'm really freaking out. They say it is probably just fine but I have to have hcgs done and another scan in 7 days.

So scary! With the miscarriage there was no yolk sac but I was so sure there would be a fetal pole now :(

Oh Hugs for you Fiona! It must be so scary for you. Try not to worry too much, it's still early days xxx
I'm glad they think it will be fine

You are measuring 6 weeks so hopefully that is a good sign. Will they do 2 hcgs before the next scan?

Yes, they said they'd recommend hcgs every 2 days so I'll wait for my GP to phone. The sonographer said they see this all the time and most of the time it is ok (sometimes not).

I just wish it could've been nice and clear as now I know I will stress :(

Seeing a yolk sac is a good thing, though - try to focus on that.   I hope it doesn't take long for them to get a conclusive result for you and that it's a good one.

You poor thing. You don't need that. It is really encouraging that they often see that and things are usually fine. Try and focus on the positives - easier said than done!

Like I said in my text, sounds perfect to me! Early scans can vary hugely within a matter of days or even hours. I had a scan at 5w5d with the gremlins and saw only the yolk sac, even with an internal. Had a scan at the exact same gest with this bub and saw only yolk sac on external scan and fetal pole + heartbeat on interal scan. It also depends a lot on the equipment they have and how up to date it is.
Bear in mind that at 6 weeks baby is around 1-2mm, the size of a sesame seed, so it's perfectly normal not to be able to see much. They grow 1mm per day at that stage tho so in a weeks time you should def have a good strong heartbeat.
Hang in there, I know the waiting is the toughest. I'm up for coffee any time if you want a distraction.

My first scan with Ella at approx 6 weeks 6 days was exactly the same.
I didn't know enough to be worried by that, and the sonographer didn't seem concerned by it at all, just told me they'd see me in another 6 weeks for the 12 week scan!
All the best Fiona, I know its impossible not to worry but try not to lose hope okay?

Ive read about this, and most times everything is all good, if you had another scan in say a weeks time there will be something there. The fact that the sac is measuring bang on and you have no bleeding etc is a very good sign
Try not to worry too much **hugs**

I think that is pretty normal, but still stressful to you all the same.
I hated the waiting, and not knowing.
At my 9 week scan (they put me back to 7 weeks though) they were able to see everything, but that is one more week than you are now.

Hopefully everything will be fine

It's hard but try not to stress too much...when I went for a 6 week scan (I think I was 6 weeks and 2 days or thereabouts) they only just managed to pick up the heartbeat.

I'm sure everything will all be fine on your next scan, it does all look promising!

Yeah she said it wasn't bad, it just meant she couldn't confirm the viability as they can't do that until they see the heart and pole

Thanks to good ol' Wiki...

The fetal pole is a thickening on the margin of the yolk sac of a fetus during pregnancy. It is usually identified at 6.5 weeks with abdominal ultrasound imaging, and 6 weeks with vaginal ultrasound imaging. However it is quite normal for the fetal pole to not be visible until about 8 weeks. The fetal pole may be seen at 2-4 mm crown-rump length (CRL), and heart motion is often detected when it is seen. In the embryo, the heartbeat is seen as a regular flutter, which should be first evident at 5 mm CRL. If the embryo is less than 5 mm CRL, it is possible for it to be healthy without showing a heartbeat, though a follow up study in 5-7 days will almost always demonstrate the heartbeat.

If the fetal pole had been there I wouldn't be worried. That is the bit that is concerning me. Wiki is the only place that says it's normal for it to not be there at 6 weeks.

Go with the Wiki opinion. Bubs will show itself soon enough and about 30 weeks from now you'll be thinking how nice it will be to get him/her out! Uncomfortable pregnant lady talking tonight
I had no yolk sack on my first scan with DD (5 weeks I think?) and that freaked me out a bit, but it was all fine. This pregnancy mw had a really hard time finding a heartbeat at my first appointment at 12 weeks, only just got it for a second. These babies tend to stress us out before they're even here!
Also, the fetal pole might actually have been there and the equipment just didn't pick it up or the technician was having an off day - these things happen. Did they do an internal scan? Cos that might have made a difference too. Pleasant as they are!
Big hugs again - the waiting and wondering isn't fun.

Yeah they did an internal scan. Just saw a blob of something in the sac but she said she couldn't find a pole. She did't really look closely that the blob I don't think.

I THINK, but don't know, that she was new to the job. She seemed to be very proper with the towels, explainations etc and almost umcomfe about the transvaginal ultrasound. I could have been totally wrong though.

Argh so my doctor is away and the nurse said that the scan results have not even been sent through to the doctors rooms yet! So I still haven't got an offical word on whether what they saw was ok or not or what happens next.

Hugs, Fiona!

My first scan with this baby was like that... yolk sac, but no sign of the baby at all (fetal pole or heart beat). I had to wait for a scan a couple of weeks later to confirm viability, and now I'm counting down to delivery.

Okay... my second scan was in early October, so I would have been just over 9 weeks. As I recall, I was measuring spot-on for dates - enough so that my LMP EDD was taken as my official one.

Yeah my sac was measuring bang on. A doc just phoned and said they see plenty of scans at 6 weeks where there is no pole and it goes on to be just fine. Have to wait until Wed before they will allow another scan though.

hugs fiona, our thoughts are with you chicky. I can understand them wanting to wait a decent length of time coz if you had another scan tomoroow, it may not show any change and that would get you even more stressed and worried.

Is everything ok with elle? you said you were worried about her?
