My friend is going to one for a 5 month old girl at easter and has no idea on what to get and neither do I .
Help please.

I think it is "traditional" to give something the child can keep.
I know I got given an engraved brooch and an opal necklace for mine.
Depends how much your friend wants to spend and how close she is to the child I guess?
Maybe a nice hardcover book with a special message she wrote inside?

For Ella baptism presents we got were....photo frames, money boxes (heaps of them), necklaces, kids cultery set, wooden rattle, picture for her wall (that's all I can think of at the moment).
like the idea of a book with a message written inside...

We've had our girls dedicated (not christened but similar ceremony) and didn't get anything. You can always go with clothing if you really want to buy something.

Tom got rosary beads from his godmother, a story book from someone I dont even know and some letters spelling his name for his door and a picture frame. Nothing too traditional apartfrom the rosary beads

I've been to two Catholic christenings in recent times, and I bought a gold crucifix for one (a very very very dear friends daughter, so the $ was irrelevent) and a small baby size Rosary for the other. I would give a keepsake gift, a bangle, locket, cross, book, bible that sort of thing.

Our thing we tend to get for baby's being christened is a silver rattle, you can get this engraved but we don't. Christies here in palmy has them, kinda a plastic round rattle with a silver heart shape in the middle that can spin, not too expensive, and the baby can actually use it.

I got my girls bangles but I might get a charm bracelet or ID bracelet for Alyssa as the bangles are tiny so didn't last.
Photo frames or albums are good, you can write a special message inside an album cover.
Pacoes(sp) and farmers have a selection of silver money boxes or keepsake boxes and cute little ornaments for babies as well.
