you ladies are wise and always so helpful. I have a bit of a dilemma. We have a 6 month old son. A few days before I was booked in for my induction, DH tells me our video camera is stuffed. So I rang around to see if we could have it fixed, but was told it would take around 10 days. I was so upset, and rang my Dad. He then went out and bought one for us to use for when bubs was born. Turns out hubby managed to get our camera going for the birth, but it has intermittent problems, and still needs fixing. It will cost $55 just for them to look at it, and no guarantee that it can be fixed.

Anyway, there is a digital camera that we can buy for half the normal retail price, but we can only get it half price this weekend. It takes photos and video, and it is really good quality. I told Dad about it (as he has the same one and paid full price for it). He said they would loan us the money and we can pay it off. But also said we could just have the video camera he bought for us just before DS was born, as it's had very little use.

Also, DH did heaps of overtime last week, which I'd like to put into our dwindling savings account, but it would more than pay for the camera.

Do we buy the new camera? Get Dad's video camera that he doesn't need from him? Get our old one fixed?

Sorry for the big long story!

Does the one you Dad bought take stills as well, or do you have a good quality still digital camera?
If so I would more inclined to take your Dad's offer of having the camera he bought and saving the money

Yeah, I know that is the most sensible option, but DH loves his toys and I feel bad for denying him it when he worked such long hours last week.

I'm not sure if Dad's video camera takes stills, but we do have a good(ish) still digital camera. I say goodish as it's nearly 6 years old and is only 4MP, whereas the new one is 8MP. Way better quality photos, and probably better video than Dad's video camera too.

Hmmmm, what a conundrum!

Buy the camera off your dad for what you would've paid for it on special? If they refuse to take money give them petrol/grocery vouchers or something.

Yep I would take the one your Dad's offering and save your $$. Your baby is only 6 months old,..there are gonna be heaps of things he will need/you will want for him, in the coming year, and will be good to have that $$ spare, IMO!

I would take your dads offer - its free and most newish video cameras are just as good as each other. Your DH is still get a new toy (for him anyhow)

I mean my very ancient video camera took really fantastic videos and I would still use it (at home as its huge compared to now a days videos) if i could get tapes etc... for it.

I agree. Don't go and spend lots on a new camera. Just think.. in 6 months time it will be 'old' and there will be a new one that is 10MP! Do you really need a new one??

I say take the one from your Dad. My dad gave me a Handycam when he decided to upgrade to a DVD one when Maya was little and it's still working perfectly.

What about
accept the one from your dad (he'll probably borrow it now and then so no need to pay)
see if your DH is really keen to buy something else with say 50% of his overtime cheque
