When I was pregnant I ate whenever I could!! But then I was VERY VERY relaxed during pregnancy and birth with what to do and how to do things so I wouldn't be the best person to give advice.
Midwives have charts / lists of what you shouldn't eat (ham, cheese and other things I can't remember) or you could go to google.co.nz and type in pregnancy and it will come up with related sites

Have a look here re http://www.nzfsa.govt.nz/consumers/food-safety-topics/foodborne-illnesses/pregnancy/ - NZFSA - Food Safety in Pregnancy . You should have gotten a copy of the leaflet when you confirmed your pregnancy with your GP :)

I think I remember reading that you only need something like 200 extra calories a day to support a growing fetus, so definitely no eating for two, thats a myth! Make sure you eat lots of fruit & vege, and red meats/fish especially. If you have ever had low iron levels, you might want to consider taking an iron supplement too, because your body can't produce enough to support both of you, so a lot of people become anaemic during pregnancy.

You suppose to up your calcium intake as well. Your midwife will test your iron levels when you have a blood test, then if they are low she will prescribe you iron tablets. If she does prescribe you iron tablets ask for a prescription for metamucil as well as iron tablets can make you constipated and metamucil is kind of expensive to buy, so ask for prescription. Eat plenty of protein and drink plenty of water, try to stay away from fizzy drinks and sugary foods, eat them as treats. Hard i know when you get those cravings.

I had to be on a strict diet in my first pregnancy as I had high blood pressure intially, I lost weight overall, even at eight months pregnant. This was from eating well (probably the first time in my life!!). I ate seven servings of vegetables and fruit, drank 3 litres of water, and did everytihng by the book. Most miserable time in my life!!! But i was healthy as! When i was pregnant with Taine, I was a lot more relaxed in terms of what I ate, but still tried to eat lots of veges and fruit and stayed away from too much greasy food. I didn't lose wieght, but then again, was a lot happier!

I'm trying to eat plenty of fruit and veges but it can be hard when my body just badly wants carbs...any carbs...they are the only thing that stop me feeling ill!

I think everyone has covered everything though.

Dont worry about how much weight you are putting on. Eat what you feel like as long as it isnt in huge quantities at one time, if its carbs and no fruit at the moment then go with it. Later on fruit might be all you want. I am a firm believer that your body is telling you what you need to eat.

Salt & Vinegar chips work well for me too...I'm lucky I haven't put on to much weight which is good...I'm also going with what my body demands - within reason...it's working so far! I figure better that than make myself sick with something I really don't want!

Have you actually got a record of what you weighed before you found out you were pregnant, and what you actually weigh now? (mrs frantic)
