For the last couple of weeks Samara has started waking every 2-3 hours. I know I shouldn't as she is old enough to sleep through but I feed her back to sleep. Sometimes it's only a few minutes and sometimes it's around a 15 minute feed. She has only ever slept through about three times. She is on 3 solids a day also. She only has one sleep a day in the morning for around an hour and a half.
Any ideas on how we can break this habit as I am exhuasted and I have no idea what to do as Zac has slept through from 8 weeks. Just realised I've put this in the wrong place - I blame it on sleep deprivation! ------------- Zac Mark - 30.11.05 Samara Ailsa - 13.08.07 |

Sorry no advice really, just wanted to let you know that I know how you feel. Jack was fed to sleep until about a month ago when we began to change. Just as I started to get one late evening wake up (10ish) and one early morning, he has developed a 'wind problem' that keeps him up!
How about having her sleep in your bed? Will that help your sleeping? It could be a developmental thing. Apparently babies practice new skills in their REM sleep. Has she started crawling? Sitting? Or could it be teething? Jack's sleeping gets worse when he teeths. ------------- Lindsey

My 7.5 month old wakes at 2 to three times a night and has never slept right through so I feel your pain.
I usually pop him in my bed from his first wake and that gets us through - I have heard many people say the same thing around this age going from sleeping to waking again. Sorry I couldn't be more help. ------------- http://lilypie.com">

Ella does the same thing- wakes up several times in the night and won't sleep unless she is feed. Last weekend I decided to get tough of her as basically she does not need the extra feeds. I couldn't do CIO or CC, so I basically sat in her room beside the cot and just patted and shhhhh her until she fell asleep. It took me about an hr to get her to finally go to sleep...but she eventually got there. I know getting her to change her habits won't happen overnight with me using this method, but last night she slept from 6.30-4 and then went back to sleep until 7.15 so it was a HUGE improvement. For me it was a matter of me making a firm decision to do it (I have tried a couple of times but just gave me) and to find a method that I was totally comfortable with. Good work Mum2Ella. I was about to suggest the same thing.
Michaela was 10 months and had only ever slept through twice, was fed to sleep most nights but often took hours to go to sleep and was waking several times for feeds every night. I was working full time and was exhausted so I decided enough was enough. Like Mum2Ella I couldn't CIO or CC so I decided to set some bedtime rules: 1st no feed to sleeps or dummy's 2nd no rocking or cuddling to sleep 3rd she had to fall asleep in her own cot I would do her bedtime routine, put her in her cot and the sit next to her, patting her but not making any noise nor eye contact. 1st night took a long time to get her to sleep, second night was better and it continued improving until all I did was put her down and leave the room while she self settled. Better than that within 3 nights she was sleeping through and apart from the odd occasion (when she's sick or teething) we haven't looked back. -------------

Linzy she has started crawling and sometimes when I go in she is on all fours.
I guess I'm just going to have to get tough and try the patting and shhing. We did try it last week - I did it for 45 mins then my husband took over for 45 mins and we should of kept it up. But the first wake up around 1-1:30 she does seem really hungry - the other times I know it's just for comfort - so should I give her a feed at that time and then do the patting and shhing the next time or is that defeating the purpose? If you think that she is hungry maybe you could feed her for a set time or take her off the breast when she starts to get drowsy, then try patting, shhh etc
If she has started crawling and is practicing in her sleep then it may possibly be smething that she will stop in time. How much time? Not sure ------------- Lindsey

Are you stll dreamfeeding her? If not, maybe preempt that 1.00 wakeup by doig a dream feed just before you go to bed and see if it makes a difference.
i only say that because when I dream feed lily she can sleep till 6amish (although she sometimes wakes up and has to be resettled through the night) and when I don't - like last night - she will wake and neeed a feed around 12-2am. -------------

Kim, I know what you are going through! Lachie has slept through since about 9 weeks but over the last couple of weeks he has been waking 1 or 2 times a night, it has been a shock to the system. I try not to feed him but if he takes a while to settle I will, mainly so I can go back to bed (I know I probably shouldn't). I will only feed him once. Usually when I go in he is also on his knees and half asleep, I thnink he is practising in his sleep! I am praying that he settles down again soon. He also used to go down awake with no problem at night but now sometimes he chats, winges for up to an hour. I have just cut his 3:30 sleep so it will be interestng to see if that helps.

I've never dream fed as Samara goes to bed at the same time as me - although lately she has started going down between 8-8:30 and then I go to bed at 9:30. I just can't seem to get her into bed any earlier.
Maybe I'm giving her her meals at the wrong time? Breakfast is between 8:00 - 9:00am. She then has a sleep around 10 or 11 so she has her lunch quite late. Today was at 1:30 and then she will have her dinner between 5-6. We had a horrible night last night. Tried the patting and ssshing which went on for two hours. After the first hour I gave her a little feed to calm her down and then it took another hour for her finally to go to sleep. She was awake from 1:30 - 2:30 and then slept till 7:30 so we are going to continue on with it. She is sooooo different to her big brother! ------------- Zac Mark - 30.11.05 Samara Ailsa - 13.08.07 |

The best discovery we ever made with Daniel was that he needed to go to bed earlier so we made small changes to his routine so that he could.
We also found that while a safety sleep didn't work for us for months. We pulled it out recently to use so that he would stay put and stay asleep longer. He was rolling around his cot and keeping himself awake rather than waking up and going back to sleep quickly. |

I've been thinking about a safety sleep for her as she always is in a different position when we go in. Sometimes on her knees, head right up against the end of the cot, at the other end of the cot facing a different way! Is she too old to try? But I also don't want to spend $100 on one and it not work, and then it's another thing to wean her off!

We didn't use it on Daniel til about that age, maybe a little after even. At first we made sure it was snuggly done up, now it's pretty loose.. just enough so that he does a wriggle and realises he's strapped in and goes to sleep.
You can always resell it if it doesn't work. The resale value was pretty high when I checked on TM a few months ago |

I use a safety sleep with Lachie and it does stop him moving him aorund the cot but does not stop him turning over and trying to crawl, I am thinking of trying to pin him in it so he can't turn over but am not sure -------------

I used to use a safe T sleep for Ella- but she started rolling onto her tummy in it and couldn't roll back, so I stopped using it. She does crawl all over her cot and stands up and jumps up and down but I haven't found that it stops her going to sleep...if she starts being silly I just leave her to it and she calms down pretty quickly. Same thing in the middle of the night...if she stands up and starts crying I don't give her any extra attention, I just sit beside her going shhhhh and she just lies down by herself. Does mean she ends up in pretty weird positions in her cot ------------- Mum to Ella (5) and Tom (2) |

| That's awesome you got her down at that hour if you have never had success before. Daniel goes to bed around 6:30... sometimes even 6 if he's had a crap day! I hope it helps! |
