How old do babies have to be when you can let them sleep on there tummies? I have had the worst night ever with Lauren's sleeping last night for the first time, she was desperate to sleep on her tummy, but I worry as it was drummed in so much pre-baby "that they must sleep on there back".

She is very strong, and is nearly crawling, surely its o.k now, although I think I would still worry We do have a sound and movement monitor for a wee bit of peace of mind.

 Thoughts appreciated!

I thought it was ok once they could roll from tummy to back.

yeah it is ..in theory..i probably still wouldnt do it till at least 6 months after the cot death risk is lowered.. but thats just me..i think officially its after they can roll tummy to back.

yep once they can roll and if they have good neck control its probably ok, I used to sleep on my tummy for day dot so i am sure she will be fine.
T still worries me when he does it though

I would think that if she has good head control she can move her head if she ends up face down. I understand how you feel, Jack now sleeps alot on his tummy even though I put him asleep on his back. You have the sound and movement monitor so that will help ease your mind. Maybe call the PlunketLine to ease your mind as well

I would do it, wish I had let Isla sleep on her tummy ealrier, she was sooo much happy and slept way better when we did. As long as she can support her head when on her tummy, and can move it easily side to side,..and u lie her with her arms out up beside her face, then should be sweet!

She can move her head from side to side very easily and spends most of her day on floor on her tummy so has very good head control. I will still put her to sleep on her back but then just let he do what she wants. She also likes to sleep on her side!

Char has slept on her tummy form very early on, like 2 weeks or something. It was nerve wracking, but it worked for us.

However, I think the general concensus is good head control, move head from side to side, and once they are rolling, good luck stopping it!

I think she would be fine. and you have your monitor...just brush up on your baby CPR (kinda just kidding....but I would myself...paranoid)

Tom is wanting to do something similar but although he is VERY strong and can crawl and even start to climb he is really bad at rolling from tummy to back so he rolls over and then cant roll back and gets upset and I am getting up 3-4 times a night to turn him back over...thats all. I'm thinking of putting the safety sleep back on but I know he likes to sleep on his side.

Isla was always side slept, she has never slept on her back. I cant remeneber what age we started tummy sleeping her, about 6 months I think.

Daniel sleeps on his tummy sometimes, especially if he ends up in bed with us after a horrible teething day.

We hardly ever back slept Daniel for the first 6 months of his life - always side slept.

We let Gina sleep any way she liked from when she was around 9 months old I think - we still use the Angel Care monitor though so that gives me a peace of mind.
Emma on the other hand is already sleeping on tummy only at NICU so I think we may let her do that at home - she too will be hooked to the Angel Care monitor though.

I know a few babies who have tummy slept since day one. My nephew for instance tummy slept as he would scream anytime he was placed on his back until he was picked up or rolled over (later they discovered he had a hernia).

The important thing is that they have strong necks so they can move their heads if they need to and also that you don't have any kind of plastic covering on the cot mattress.

If she is able to push herself up to almost crawling then you should be ok.
