How do you define childrens play??

And how do you think children learn through play??

The first question i'm having a bit of trouble with, but the second I say children learn through play all the time. I think of Andrew who plays with his train tracks. He learns problem solving as some tracks have to go a certain way and he has to work it out. Also when he plays with his play tools he is learning about safety and what to do with them.

Heya
Have you got the book 'Play and pedagogy in early childhood' by Sue Dockett and Marilyn Fleer?

Its a whole book pretty much dedicated to answering your question, im sure it would be in your uni library otherwise

Yeah i've looked at the book and its out at the Massey Libraries which is a shame and I can't afford to buy it. It is the course book for the paper too.

if it's the course book becks they should have one in the reserve area at the library. If you are extramural, you can get them to photocopy up to a whole chapter for you, or you can ask them to photocopy anything to do with a play definition

I might have a look on the website to see if there is a copy on reserve. It's an extramural paper but I'm an internal student wonder if they'll do it.

there should be. i used to use them all the time when i had spent my loan on more important things (read:drinking). You may have to go up there though if you are internal.

How do you define childrens play??
Something they enjoy doing by themselves
A game
A toy
An activity

And how do you think children learn through play??
There's so many stages to this!
Learning things that fit into each other
Learning different textures and forms (soft, hard, wet and substance of pouring wet etc)
Learning rules (of games and of gravity)

There's a nother book, i cannot remember the author, but i8t's called "take another look" it's a guide to observing children and defining play. There's a heap in there. Also, I have a few human growth and development books that talk about play etc if you want to borrow them.
