Hey was just wanting to hear from others who have/had kiddies with heart murmurs and what happened
When Paris was around 15 months and had health probs a doc picked it up randomly at a visit, but when we went back to get it re-checked the other doc couldn't find it, said it was probably nothing. next time we got the first doctor again, a few months or so later, he said about it again, and said to recheck it. same thing happened again. then our usual doc said it was nothing, even though he could hear it. (we go to "the doctors" so usually have a few different docs we can see, all are great though... for the most part) tonight - we took paris to the docs for her cough, and a different doctor, who we have seen a fair amount lately, said to me about her heart murmur again, and said it was really loud, and that he was surprised that she hadn't been referred to a paeditrician for it, cos she was getting to an age where it should have been seen to, and should have dissapeared or resolved itself as most murmurs usually do. He refered us right then and there, thank goodness. so hopefully we should get an appointment in a few weeks and see what is up. however It has me a little worried considering the probs that are in the family (with bailey and a few others), and also because i feel bad for not having pushed.. even though i have the knowledge i still thought doctor knows best. I even have thought those times when the docs didn't pick it up that, at the time i thought well, they have a different way of auscultating with the stethoscope and didn't check at all of the different points across the chest that they are supposed to... which is prob why they didn't get it. sounds obsessive i know but hey. so for those of you this has happened with, what happened with your kiddies? ------------- Janine and her 2 cool chicks, Paris & Ayja

Hi Janine,
My sister has a heart mummer she now 25yrs old thought, all she need to do is take antibiotics before surgery or labour or dentist. Sorry not sure why this is, but she also has floppy valves but this is not a problem.
Have a look at the link it's an Aussie one but it be the same.

My niece had a heart murmur when she was born however by 5 years it had gone away on it's own. Boy you've had a bad run. I really hope it's just minor and I'm sure Paris will be just fine. Janine, that is no good! Poor Paris! Don't feel bad about not picking it up, you can't be superhuman and I am sure most of us would rely on the info given to us by doctors. At least it is getting sorted now.

Harmony has an "innocent" murmur which is getting re-checked when she is around 1. she also had a clicky hip which gets re-x-rayed in june. ------------- BECS http://www.sparklee.com">

I don't know much about heart murmurs other than that my specialist picked one up in me when I was preg that I had never heard about until then and have never heard about since.
Good luck with the paediatrician! I'm sure the docs are just covering all their bases and the paediatrician will wonder what all the fuss is about. -------------  Maya Grace (28/02/03)

I think I had a heart murmur. Well... I don't actually know what they are but I remember Mum asking me a little while ago about people checking my ehart and whether they ever commented on it. Something about an irregular heartbeat or something else??? Who knows...

My sister was born with a hole in her heart... one day she turned baby blue due to lack of oxygen and the specialists at Taupo Hospital sent Mum and Dad to Greenlane... by the time they got there, she was pink again and the cardiologists couldn't find the hole! My aunty, uncle and cousin were all born with quite big holes in their hearts. My uncles fit and well and his daughter is too. Shes 15 now and was on monitors and all for the first few years. Dont know what they did with my uncle tho. Sadly my aunty died at 6mths but that was 50 years ago. Heaps of us in our family had/have heart murmurs and we are all ok. At least Paris has been referred. You will be able to ask a heap of questions. Dont feel bad about not pushing with the docs. Its an ingrained thing that we think docs know best. I have a slight murmur but only my GP that i have had since I was three ever picks it up, no other doctor has ever mentioned it to me before. But I am hope it all goes well for you and that you get an appointment soon. ------------- http://www.bump-and-beyond.com/">

funny though - now that i know what it sounds like, i can pick it up soooo easily..even just listening with my ear on her chest without a stethoscope - there's a very clear irregularity.. not feeling terrible about it just a little bummed but thanks ladies, will be al earning experience for me as well (seeing the silver lining and all that...) ------------- Janine and her 2 cool chicks, Paris & Ayja

my gp that piked up harmonys murmur described it as a swoohsing sound which was the blood movin round the valves.i didnt think it had anythin to do with irregular beats?? ------------- BECS http://www.sparklee.com">

Hi Janine,
My dr picked up a heart murmur at Jasmines 3 month check. She said that it probably wouldn't be a problem, worst case scenerio Jasmine will need to take antibiotics with dental work or surgery. She referred Jaz to North Shore Hospital. 3 weeks later we go to the hospital where the dr confirms the murmur and monitors her heart beats on a machine and takes x-rays (great fun trying to keep a 3month old still!). Everything looked OK but was referred to Starship Hospital to see pediatric cardiologist. A month later we go to Starship where she gets more tests done and cardiologists are happy that the murmer is not serious They also said that if they stopped kids randomly on the street to check for heart murmurs 20% would have them! I was very relieved needless to say. At 9 months old Jaz was checked again at North Shore Hospital and the murmur was hardly detectable, yah! I hope this helps, and the best of luck with your little one. |
