Hi everyone

Just after a bit of advice. As some of you know, last year I got declined by my insurance company to have a laporoscopy for endometriosis (they said it was pre-existing even though it had never been diagnosed or brought up before... *rant rant*)

Anyhoooooo....

I have been on the public waiting list for just over 6 months and I finally got my letter in the mail with my surgery date (May 8th)

Has anyone else gone through the public system for this before? What are your experiences? Any advice? If they find anything (specialist is pretty sure they will), will they do anything about it, or will I have to go back for another lap?

To be honest, I'm scared sh*tless. I've never had an op before, and even though this isn't anything major... it's still bloody terrifying.

Thanks in advance for any advice :)

Aren't insurance companies ASSES! Mine tried to wriggle out of paying but I won through in the end - so didn't need that stress!

Sorry - no advice for the public system. I can't imagine your treatment will be much differnt though.

My only advice is lots of arnica and panadol!!!!

Good luck

i've had 2 laps done at the old chch womens hosp and they were fine. the first one was to remove cysts, as that's what they thought was the problem, but when they got in there i had endo but they couldn't remove it at the time because of the schedule

so i had to go back for another lap to remove it. the nurses were all lovely and the dr explained everything thoroughly.

i'm abit of a freak and love ops.....well it's more the feeling of waking up that i love...yeah i'm a weirdo i know!

you'll be fine lou, yay for finally getting a date!!

Yep my first was public and I found they really rushed me out of there after the op. I had the op at 11am and was out at 3pm. Didn't really get any answers until the follow up appointment.

Yep I went public.
It is a bit scary but better in the long run coz then you know whats going on.
If you're not sure about things then ask, ask, ask and keep asking until you know all there is to know.
My surgeon told me that if they found anything that they would take care of it then and there to save having to operate again. I am not sure if that means they would remove ovaries etc or not. But you could ask about such things and if you don't want them to do things like that then they shouldn't. They will give you a good clean out. I found that good (even though they didn't find anything for me) and it made things a little better after the op.

Oh yeah they do try and rush you out the door. However I was in so much pain they had to pump me full of morphine so I had to stay overnight in hospital. I think the surgeon was a little rough. Was worse than giving birth (for me anyways - hope I am not scaring you)

i had my op at 10.30am and didn't go home til 6pm after i had something to eat and was feeling 'ok'.

but that was a while ago, so not sure how things are going in the new hospital now-a-days.

if they find anything, they will remove it then and there. the worst part about the op is the shoulder pain from the gas! i didn't get warned about that so that's my only gripe with the drs! just remember to get lots of painkillers and rest up alot afterwards! i found the recovery harder than my c/sections.

but it's well worth it!

Thanks for the advice everyone.
My main concern is waking up... I suffer from anxiety attacks, and a lot of them happen when I wake up. Guess I will need to let them know all of that stuff!

It's just so weird. They send a letter, with a bit of reading material (not much), you fill it out, send it back, and then just arrive for surgery on the day. My private specialist wanted me to do a bowel prep the day before as well because he thinks it's on my bowels, but they haven't mentioned any of that. Just the standard don't eat from midnight before, etc etc.

Ah well, luckily I have an appointment there a couple of weeks before (which was scheduled way back... 3 monthly check up) so I can talk it through then (need to write a list of things to ask!)

How much class will I need to miss? I study at tech and don't want to miss precious class time (have to get good marks to get into midwifery next year). My surgery is on thursday, so I will miss thurs and fi... will I be ok to go back on the tuesday? (don't have class on monday)
