I desperately need suggestions of good books - am getting bored on my reduced hours and am planning for when I go on parental leave! I tend to like books I can switch off too but a bit of more serious is OK. Any ideas/recommendations welcome.

Well pregnancy wise I LOVED Kaz Cooke's 'Up the duff' book - very witty! You may have read it already though!
Sorry no other suggestions at the moment as I can't find the time to read! Paulina Simons novels are good...

I just finished reading "always the bridesmaid". I attempted to read it a few years ago but the main character annoyed me so I stopped. I picked it up a few weeks ago and found once I got used to her complaining ways (and found out why she was always so negative) it was actually a good read - definitely the kind of book you don't need to think about.
I'm currently reading another Jack Reacher novel. I him.
After I finish this one I'm going to get out "the secret life of bees" it looks really good. Here's the synopsis:
Set in South Carolina in 1964, The Secret Life of Bees tells the story of Lily Owens, whose life has been shaped around the blurred memory of the afternoon her mother was killed. When Lily's fierce-hearted black "stand-in-mother", Rosaleen, insults three of the deepest racists in town, Lily decides to spring them both free from jail. They escape to Tiburon, South Carolina -- a town that holds the secret to her mother's past. Taken in by an eccentric trio of black beekeeping sisters, Lily is introduced to their mesmerizing world of bees and honey, and the Black Madonna.

Depends what sort of books you are into, I sorted out my book case the other day and found heaps that I haven't read yet plus heaps of my old faves.
If you're into thrillers, I loved a book called Brother Grimm, I'll get off my lazy ass and look up the author soon enough lol, it was really good, completely different and you don't see the ending coming like you do with a lot of thrillers.
My grandparents bought me a book called The Commonwealth of Thieves by Tom Keneally for Xmas, it's about the First Fleet after their arrival in Australia, factual but a surprisingly gripping read, he's researched a lot of the convicts who were on the boats and what happened to them after they arrived, who they married, who went back to the UK, who was hanged for thievery etc. I was surprised how much I enjoyed it.
ATM I'm half way thru a very slow trudge thru A Fine Balance, it's a classic but I'm finding it hard going coz it's a true story set during the caste wars in India in the 70's and reading it you'd think it was set 200 years ago, they have such backward ideas and commit such terrible atrocities.
Classics I've read and recommend, I loved "A Fortunate Life" by A B Facey, down to earth and matter of fact and a good read, I also like anything by Mitch Albom who wrote "Tuesdays with Morrie", I've got two of his other books, "For one more day" and "The five people we meet in heaven" and they were both excellent.
I also like crappy crime novels, but must say the last two PJ Tracey books I read were disappointing.
If you want to borrow some books Flissty, feel free. I have a huuuuge collection!
I also discovered in my clean out that I have some quite random and crappy books. I still have half my uni text books and a heap of management reference books I used when I wrote the book a few years ago, plus pregnancy and parenting titles for Africa...

My favourite Paullinna simmons book is Eleven hours, its not as long as her others....er but i dont reccommend pregnant women read it
I have just finished reading both the winner of the Booker Prize, The Gathering , By Anne Enright, and the runner up, Mr Pip, by NZer Llyod Jones, and i have to say i definetly preferred Mr Pip (and not because im patriotic) ,even tho the main character is on a pacific island in the 90s and is completley different from us here, she is easier somehow to relate to ,as for the hero of the story Mr Pip (or actually , Mr Watts), i havent met a character in a book ive been as fond of since i read To Kill a Mockingbird (love love love Atticus Finch)
some parts are rather awful, but it was easier to read than the self pitying dialogue of the main character in The Gathering

haha, only reason i did was because we had to read it in 6th form, and everyone hated it (cos they had to read it i guess) and i pretended i hated it too, but secretly , I loved it
its told from the point of view of Scout , a seven year old girl whos father Atticus, is defending Tom Robinson, a black man found guilty of raping a white girl (this is set in Alabama around 1935 btw) even after it is blindingly obvious that he couldnt have done it (hes crippled)
One sentence that always makes me well up is after they find him guilty Jem, Scouts 12 year old brother, says "how could they do it Atticus " and Atticus looks at him and says "they've done it before , and they'll do it again, and it seems when they do it....only children weep.Goodnight "
A Mockingbird basically refers to the idea that its a sin to kill a mockingbird because they dont "do anything except make beautiful music for us to enjoy " -in the book there are a few mockingbirds, namely Boo Radley the next door neighbour and Tom Robinson.
It also has a great part about living in someones skin before you judge.... anyway,. obviously i love it, i mean its not for everyone of course, but some beautiful lessons in it that we should all remember ....

Oh Becks I would love to borrow it. Will PM you.
I have her other one the summer garden and girl in time square, both really good.
I love Jodi Picoult to, have a few of hers and want to get the new one.
My all time favourite book is a bit random, has anyone ever read The Outsiders by SE Hinton. Its one that I first read when I was a pre teen, its kind of aimed at that age but I can never resist pulling it out every year or so and reading it again.

Think I'll order the latest Jodi Piccoult from the library - I find with her and Paullina Simmons that I love one book and can constantly re-read it and then hate the next one. I'm just a fussy reader
Maybe I should make a new years resolution to read some of those old classics. Have never read To Kill a Mockingbird though everyone says it's great. My English Lit major little sister is horrified by my lack of decent reading material!
I've recently discovered Agatha Christie as well which I'm actually finding myself enjoying!

Ooo books!!!
I love Jodi Picoult too, haven't read the new one yet.
The Time Traveler's Wife by Audry Niffenigger is good, if you can get your head around time travel.
And I liked The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime.
Some of my favourite books are by Jostein Gaarder - very philosophical and really gets your brain working!
But one of my all time favourite books is one that I got from my grandmother's bookshelf called 'The Family Nobody Wanted' by Helen Doss. It's a true story about a couple who can't have children and adopt 12 orphins from mixed/minority backgrounds. Very inspirational, and such a cool story. No idea if it's still in print though!

I so want the new Marian Keyes but I can't justify $38.
But Tully by Paullina Simons is my absolute favourite
I've read it about 6 times and it gets me every time!
Penny Vincenzi is good.
If you want fluff, Sophie Kinsella's Shopaholic series is fun.
To Kill a Mockingbird is high up on my list too... fantastic, for an American novel
***eta: YES! The Time Traveler's Wife is FANTASTIC! They're making it into a movie...
OH! And The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebould - also made into a movie...but the book is fab.

I love Barbara Kingsolver, plus got hooked on the Diana Gabaldon series (although sometimes the books just annoy me! Lol)
And I've always been a Bryce Courtenay fan, but have found the last couple of his books quite hard-going...
Jodi Picoult is good too, but some of the books I just can't connect with, so get annoyed at!

I like Agatha Christie too. Read a few Ngaio Marsh but wasn't as impressed.
The only one of Jodi Picoults I've ever read was My Sisters Keeper and TBH I thought it was waaaay overhyped, none of the characters really made me empathise with them.
Mum likes The Lovely Bones, haven't read it myself tho.
I started reading Edward Rutherfurd's London while I was pregnant with Maya and still haven't gotten thru it 5 years later lol, but if you can cope with sagas then his books are renowned.
My all time fave writer tho is Maya Angelou (no kidding, I named my first born after her ), I have all 6 volumes of her autobiography, she has had THE most amazing and varied lifed, and I've also got a couple of books of her essays and poems.

What is the new Marian Keyes book? i love her, her and her books (anyone read her semi autobiographys? shes as funny as her characters)
My sisters keeper is a really good book to get you thinking, i love how you read Anna's chapters and think "man her mum is a b*tch" but then the next chapter is her mums perspective and you kinda get it a lot more, i remember she says something about looking at Kate when shes 2 and even though she was only 2, there was already millions of memories, i think all parents can relate to that
The Lovely Bones is also very good, and its coming out in the movies in October ( i think) so those of you who havent read it and might want to see the movie should read it first (cos then i can ask your opinions on the actors they chose after people have seen it haha)
A child called It, man after reading those 3 books i cried for days, the things they did to that kid, his was the third worst recorded child abuse case in the state of California (not sure if it still holds that place) makes you wonder what the other two were....actually , id rather not know! and the fact he was able to forgive his mother, what an amazing man
Emma , ive never read any of Maya Angelou, id love to read her though, can you recommend a good one to start with?

I loved The Lovely Bones and also A Fine Balance although it does go on for a long time! Am a big Marian Keyes fan. If you go to penguin.co.nz you can win a copy of the new book 'This Charmed Man'.Caitlynsmygirl, I get her monthly newsletter by email and she really is an amazing woman (if not a little neurotic!).
Last year I read the Tamar series by Deborah Challinor and I really recommend them. NZ author, stories based in NZ from when Tamar arrived on the boat in the late 1800s through to the Napier earthquake.
I read The Bone People in 7th form but bought it recently cause I want to read it again without having to analyse it.
What else/? The River God (Wilbur Smith) is one of my all time favourites and I love The Alchemist (although a lot of people don't). The Reader, which I saw they are making into a movie. Oh and The Other Boleyn Girl is great but The Boleyn Inheritance is a wee bit trashy, nothing wrong with that though!
I love The Devil Wears Prada book (movie wrecked the book!), I read it about 4 years ago and loved it. Blessed Are The Cheesemakers by Sarah Kate Lynch.
Non fiction - Bitch and Famous by Wendyll Nissen is a good read too. I love her columns.
I love books! This is a good sign, I was worried I wouldn't have time to read once I have a baby but then I've never had a problem finding time to read so far in my life so why should this be any different??

I loved the Book Thief, The boy in the striped Pyjamas,
The Kite Runner and A Thousand Splendid Suns both by Khaled Hosseini-
and The Time Travellers Wife. All of them are but good.
I didn't rate A Child Called It that much either, but I think after that was published there was a real spate of "I was abused as a child books" and unfortunately they all started to sound the same.
I find that with Jodi Picoult and Phillipa Gregory- they are good books, but you can't read them too close together as they all start to feel the same.

i've now read most the ones they recommend and haven't been let down, I never know what new authors to try so this gets me on new people.
Favorite book ever I think is 'The Island" by Victoria Hislop, I love it so much I have bought it for many other people - just such a good story.

My favourite author at the moment is Louise Bagshaw - I have 9 of her books and all of my friends are borrowing them at the moment as I have got them hooked too!

Ooh, I've just bought my first ever Jodi Picoult (Change of Heart) and I can't put it down. I've never read any of her books before.
We hired The Kite Runner on DVD last weekend. It made me want to go to Afghanistan and adopt all those poor children from the orphanages.

Hey, what a great thread. I love books and welcome others recommendations.
I'm reading The Virgin Suicides by Jeffrey Eugenides, and I'm finding it very hard to put down. I'm only half way through it so I can't say if it is totally great or not. But I did read a glowing recommendation of it the other day and so far it is enthralling.
