Just wondering what the general age is of putting a child into a single bed (with a side barrier of course) Mr T's sibling is due when hes 18 months and i personally think he will be too young to put in a big bed. Why Im asking is that Mr T was only in his bassinet for 9weeks LOL then he went into his own room in a cot....

It depends on the kid - Seb is probably ready for a big bed, he's been able to climb out of his cot since 18 months, so it's a bit useless. He can climb back in too though, so it's not a huge race to get him into a big bed - will probably be there by the end of this week though.

Other kids will be fine in a cot up till 2 1/2... I think 2 is about the average.

We changed Charlotte when she turned 2- we made it a big special treat for her birthday We built it up so had no issues as she thought she was so spoilt!

Alan went in to one about 20 month's. and Mikey went into one a 16 month's. think it really depend's on hte child. Alan was not ready earlier but Mikey was.

Isla is almost 18 months, and by no means ready for a big bed.

Was wondering the same thing, no 2 due when Leah is 22 months so will probably try for her birthday.

Paris we moved into her own bed at 11mths, provided... it was a double bed, we short-sheeted the bed, and she couldn't roll over (one of the good things about this was no getting out of bed) We put her into a big bed before she could get out, she didn't really try too much and never worried about it.

Ayja, well, she's coming up 3 and we've just taken the side off her convertible cot again after a 5 mths stint with it back on after she proved she was sooo not ready for a big girls bed. she is now on a 100 night star chart in the aim of her getting an actual big girls bed. She has to stay in bed and not get out at all to get a sticker the next day (we should be up to about day 40 by now, but she's just hit the 25 sticker mark.. not toooo bad for her), every once in a while we remind her and show her the picture of the bed and the duvet set again and she's reminded. darn it i dunno what we'll do once she gets the bed!   (for those wondering, we were planning to buy a new bed anyway, but it's fairly $$ so thought that really she needed to earn it, and what better way....)

anyway, if you do end up needing to leave newbie in a basinette for longer, use your portacot with the basinette piece (if you don't have one already, invest in one they're pretty cheap and soo worth it) because the basinette piece is much roomier, my girls stayed in them till about 5 mths old, you only need to worry once they start to 1 - get too heavy like paris did, or 2, learn to roll over and try to climb out - like ayja did.

We ended up getting 2 cots, a friend offered us one for cheap and they have pretty good resale value.

Jack ended up in his big boys bed around 22 months I think.

Maya was 20-odd months, we'd spent 2 months travelling so she hadn't been in her own cot for ages and she seemed ready, we had no major dramas. I did use a rail to sto her falling out.

Gremlins are nowhere near ready, they'll be in cots till they're 5 if I have my way They have cots that convert to beds tho so we have to buy a new cot for baby anyway so that's not an issue for us, altho even if it was I don't think I'd be rushing them out of their cots coz I kinda like that they are semi-contained.

I know, I am insane, I don't know WHAT I was thinking, except that like you, fertility issues with the gremlins fooled us into a false sense of security and whoopsy!

We also got Ella a big bed for her second birthday, I was preggers and wanted her used to sleeping in it before Benjy came along.
I think we'll wait a little longer to move Benjy though, unless he starts escaping (he did it once a while ago but I think it put him off trying again, lol!)He's quite happy in the cot and its way easier for me to have him contained and to avoid potential disruption to his sleeping.

The gremlins are in wooden cots right? They'll learn how to climb out of them, surely you can't expect otherwise with their track record! And unlike Seb with his portacot, they won't be able to get back in

Ah, but if you made a lid for those wooden cots....?!?

Now tell me I'm not onto a winner of an idea there!

BTW Emma - I'd wondered what you were gonna do for bedding and never thought of a 3rd cot - great idea though.  If I had 2 Ella's at once, they'd be in cots (lidded if necessary!) till school age!

LOL at Andies comment. Tristen is being so cheeky i think i may need a lidded cot for him. Today when I told him off (yet again i mite add with a little hand smack) for touching the Cds he turns round to me and says oooooooohh. - ratbag

Yep im with you about the fasle secuirty issues with fertility we were prepared to go another 2 years .... but obviously not. I did another preg test today just to be sure (may have been a faulty one  ) but the two lines came up funny though DH read the back of the box to make sure that two lines meant pregnant not the other way round

Izobel went into her big bed at 12months, we felt she was ready and if i remember correctly she only got out twice and then she just stayed there, hopefully Eden will be the same, but we will see!

We have a narrow bassinette so moved all our girls into the cot pretty early. Our cot is not convertible.

Hannah, we moved her into the bed at 17mos so she had two months to settle and wouldn't feel 'expelled' from her cot.

Briona was climbing the bars at 15mos so I high-tailed her outta there. She took to a bed like ducks to water, I think probably because she was 'being like Hannah'.

Kryssi was moved out at 14mos. She wasn't trying to climb out but she's too tall (over 80cm) and I didn't want her to topple out (like the bath last night! )

Now we have no baby in the cot...

I know Alia, my days are numbered Sienna can get out of the portacot, but the sleep sacks seem to hinder her traction in the wooden cots. Mind you, they used their little red chairs to climb on the kitchen bench today.... I'm thinking I like Andie's lid idea!

Yup Sylv, took us over a year first time round, and this wee one is a one shot wonder, makes me cross when I think of how many times we BDed every month for months on end and couldn't hit the target and then when we barely have the time or energy to look at each other...

jack went into his big bed the night of his 2nd birthday. charli was due a couple of months after that so we wanted him to get used to the bed before she came. he moved into the bigger bedroom too which we painted up for him so we made it into a really special thing for him.
he slept in the bed the whole night and we've never had any problems at all

we'll probably look at putting charli in a big bed just after her 2nd birthday too. hopefully, she will cope the same as jack did!
