I went to a talk on midwifery today that turned out to be all on maori midwifery and traditional maori birthing practices. I learnt so much today and it made me realise how much I want to do midwifery so for anyone who is thinking about doing midwifery (maori or not) or anyone who is pregnant/TTC and is interested in maori birthing practices I highly reccommend checking out http://www.ngamaia.co.nz - nga maia and if you can get along to one of the talks. Pauline is so nice and you will learn so much.

It has a place to find maori midwives too

I read an interesting book recently called Rediscovering Birth by Sheila Kitzinger which briefly touches on Maori birth practises, but also on practises from other cultures all over the world, it's fascinating stuff!

Yeah definately, I'm not maori but found a lot of what I wanted in a birth the same. I love how they have the whole whanau involved, and love younger mums. The talk really was something I will remember forever.

Thats so cool!

ETA: It's funny how having the gremlins has changed my whole perspective on birth, I was terrified of it having Maya and I really think that impacted on my experience, whereas with the gremlins I was so much more educated, had read heaps about birth and birth practises and I knew what to anticipate and it was a really empowering experience. Am hoping for a repeat performance this time!

I so know what you mean. I have always been so interested in pregnancy and birth but always thought of birth as a hospital, epidural type thing. Homebirths were for hippies lol. I had the most amazing midwife who opened up my eyes so much and then after having Jack I read every book on birth I could get my hands on. I hope I can one day be a midwife that empowers women to make informed choices to have the best birth they can. Knowledge is power.

I hope you do too
