Has anyone had it?? I'm thinking of getting it this year and I think I qualify for it for free as I have an immune disease ------------- I was a puree feeder, forward facing, cot sleeping, pram pushing kind of Mum... and my kids survived! |
(or 2 lucky me). Does anyone know what immune diseases qualify??Replies:

I haven't had it, but I've heard you need to boost your vitamin c before hand as it does tend to give you the flu bug shortly after due to putting a small amount of the virus into your system.. -------------

mike had it, only cost him $10 thru the ucol student centre as he's a student, (so you could probably get it thru massey med centre for the same i think)
I was going to get it, but said to mike "nah, i hardly ever get the flu, I don't see the point" and what do you know, a week later, I come down with the flu, and darn it, have had 5 days off work and still have it!!! ------------- Janine and her 2 cool chicks, Paris & Ayja

Asthma and any other chronic condition. As A nurse we arfe given free shots as Emma said to cut down on staff sick leave. I have had it done for the last 5 years and all my kids are getting it this year too. ------------- http://lilypie.com">

I'd be inclined to do a lot of research about having it when your immunity is already compromised. Yeah I know it's recommended for those with low immunity already, but I rekon it'd still be worth looking into exactly how your immune system is effected by Glandular Fever and any research about GF and vaccinations. ------------- Andie |

Thank Nic I usually watch breakfast but I will make sure I do watch that. I had it last week. I've been getting it free through work for the past decade (oh, I feel so old) and the only year I missed was when I was on maternity leave. I even had it last year although I was breast feeding.
Someone said that it gives you the flu. It can't, it's a dead strain, but it takes 2 weeks before your full immunity is built up so you can catch the flu within the first two weeks. It also only protects against a couple of strains so if you manage to catch a different strain of the flu your stuffed. However if you get the flu jab every year you'll find that you may be already protected against a strain of flu even though it's not in this years jab. The flu jab won't always stop you from getting the flu. It works by preparing your immune system to fight against the strains that are dominant. You may still get the flu but it will be more mild and you'll recover much quicker than if you hadn't got the jab. -------------

this is interesting on the american site I'm on they all get it when pregnant...which isnt my cup of tea..but apparently very safe..i get it every year.though i havent this year and i didnt when i was pregnant..have not had the flu since i got the jab and havent ever got sick after it.. ------------- Mum to two amazing boys! |

Apparently it's recommended for women in their 2nd and 3rd trimesters over here but they refuse to give it to you if you're in your 1st tri. The nurse who gave me mine last year when I was breastfeeding advised against feeding for first 12 hours after jab. -------------

Yeah I get mine every year (get it free cos of asthma). Oo thanks for pointing out about breastfeeding mrsmojo, I'll have to start stocking up on EBM. I'm gonna get it done at the same time Harry gets his 3 month jabs.
One year I got the flu REALLY badly, and I had had the jab that year. But I got a different strain to what I was immunised against - I think this is where people get confused, thinking the jab caused it. And off topic but man that flu was so bad. I felt like I was dying, couldn't eat or get outta bed and didn't even want to watch tv (this was when I was a teenager!). I had it about 2 weeks ago, get it through work's healthy work force policy, I have had the jab for about 10 years solid, apart from the year I was off on mat leave and waddaya know I had flu that year, so do not want to go through that ever again.
Felt like someone had punched my arm for a few days but no other problems after the jab, even got a lollipop for my pain 
Edited as i realised I didn't really answer your question We offer flu jab to our transplant patients who are immuno suppressed, the flu jab is a dead virus, so no live bits of vaccine get into you, depending on what your imune syndromes are, this is usually the advice with the flu jab ------------- http://www.babysfirstsite.com">
