Oky doky, I was thinking about this a couple of weeks ago seeing as it's a year since we last did it, and especially with everyone posting about how tight things have gotten with mortgage/grocery/petrol/rates increases, what a great time.

So my proposal is this - from the 1st May - 31st of May I will go back to my Rampant Consumerism rules. That means no non-essential spending (coffee out, disposable nappies, takeaways etc. etc.) for one whole month. Last year I saved $700 over the month. How much can I save this time?

Who else is with me? Go on, you know you want to!

It starts on May 1st coz I have to get baby's cot and some other bits and pieces so will do that before then, it's gonna pretty much drain my savings And coz my Aussienana soakers should be here by then so I can do night nappies.

You can start before then if you want!

I can do McCafe Mel, will just have to be one HC instead of breakfast!

I neeeed to be in. i so do.

In may we have ayja's birthday, mum's birthday, in june mike wants to buy a new car, in august we have paris's birthday, in november the wedding. and somewhere in there, ayja might actually finally finish her 100 night goal for staying in bed and then we have to get her the new bed we've promised (which she'll sorely need by then )

Therefore, this involves, 1- paying off daycare bill from over xmas when subsidy was cut. 2- paying off credit card - i told mike the only way he gets a car is if that thing is GONE! (is about $3,000)

And from there on out should be good, for the wedding etc, if we stop spending needlessly we can do this killing credit card thing really quickly (expecially with the amount of overtime/nights/weekends i'm seemingly lined up for at the mo). we keep saying we don't have money to pay off things as quickly as we could, but just counting up how much money we've spent on eating out together in the last month, and on pressies, and family outings and just stupid stuff. i'm not going to say the total, but it could cut the card down by about 1/3 to 1/2 (GASP I KNOW). We went for nearly 4 months with NO money, and since we have had it back, we've done nothing good with it.

Ok, am joining in.

The only thing i can buy for now is paris's birthday in august - ayja's pressies are done. hold me to it.

I keep looking at this thread and thinking "I should be in". I'm in with the proviso that I'm still allowed my $60 spending money but that I'm not using that for all the random stuff that I normally waste it on but I can use it for necessary baby stuff. Chocolate (an essential food group) will have to come out of the grocery budget. Am with gemsmum- need to practice for when we're on one income!

Okay will join too. Going out drinking coffees isnt our baddie.

However sometimes buying stuff that I think we still need even if it is on sale is a baddie and take aways during the month. Not good for the supposed diet or for the balance.

Would like to actually stick our budget and save for a deposit and get hubby to stop impulse buying for his hobby stuff. (planes and jet stuff works out damn expensive.)

So will be really good and hopefully one month will go in another.

although I must say Grant is buying a freaking brand new Bike in May so guess that wont count totally although it is planned.

OMG!!!!! Budget has been confirmed - We spend a stupid amount of money on take aways and Pumpkin Patch
SO... The healthy eating has just stepped up a notch and I'll put a brick on Caitlin's head to stop her growing (and try my very hardest to stay out of all malls at least until the end of May!)

I'm not that surprised about the take aways as we have just had 11 weeks with no kitchen (can't live on mircowave food for that long! lol) but i was surprised at the total figure

right, so, went thru our account tonight, looked at what we had spent, in terms of anything not bill-related.

Am appalled - that since 3rd april, until now. so, in the space of 14 days - 2 weeks. we have spent $994.28 on nothing, we got a few birthday pressies and some bikes for ourselves which maybe MAYBE accounts for about $200 - $300. but the rest, is needless spending, countless trips to the supermarket for chocolate, lollies, to the shop round the corner for the same, to the warehouse for nothing much (always walk out with something), in town looking around so buy lunch, countless hot chocolates by mr mike, and other random un-needed stuff.

If we knuckled down, If we weren't so stupid.. we could pay off our visa in 6 weeks. 6 weeks. enough time so that we can still get a new car when mike wants one.

Right that's it, THAT'S IT.

NO MORE! i knew we were bad, but not that bad.

I AM SOOOOOO IN!!!!!!

Yup. DH was bad at it for buying lunch. I was bad at it for chocolate and buying "things" for Daniel that he didn't really "need".

BUT.. it does make you feel good that once you have found this out and you start spending wisely your account balance goes up!

OMG Janine, that soooo sounds like me, except I'd be too scared to work out how much I'd spent unneccessarily!

Kellz gave me $50 for petrol yesterday (and wouldn't take it back ) and by today it was all gone just on Macca's breakfast and other assorted junk.

Only two more weeks to go tho. I'm actually looking forward to it, the state of my finances atm is making me anxious so it will be a relief to stop spending!

Well... it is when you don't even need new clothes in the first place like me!! I keep buying fabric to make clothes and "save money" when Hannah already has an overflowing wardrobe! No more for her. Well... no more fabric anyway. I have a few skirts I want to make for her.

I had paid off my credit card a few weeks ago and already it is back up to its limit! I'm a shocker. And my warrant is coming up which I don't think is gonna be pretty. Fricking car.

I also really really really want to pay off my student debt (overdrafts not loan) by the end of this year. That'll be a HUGE weight off my mind.

I sure am! I did a HUGE grocery shop on Sun and stocked up on baking stuff and have been baking like a demon ever since. Have made mini banana cup cakes, apple muffins, sultana loaf and a date/coconut slice so far.

And I sooo need to get this started coz I had to empty my savings this week to pay bills after excessive spending, so I need to replenish them before baby arrives.

Bring it on baby!

BTW, yay for you giving up smoking Becks! Good luck!

Hellooooo? Anyone there?

First update - going well so far! I thought I was going to have to go out and buy Maya a princess dress for a birthday party today but she wants to wear her fairy dress instead so no excuse to spend

Have been baking up a storm, made brownie last night to take to Amy's for lunch today, and muffins to take to Sally's on Thurs although she cheated and made me bring a choc cake home as well!

Got my $700 Southern Cross refund back so transferred that straight into savings and feeling better about that coz I had to drain all my savings last week to pay bills. So at least now I have some "fall back" money again. Oh and paid the phone bill which I had accidentally forgotten to pay last month so it was $260.

Had to buy Maya's winter school uniform yesterday but that's a neccessary evil. Now she's all set for school on Monday.

How is everyone else going? Not a bought hot choc in sight here (except the one from McD's drive thru on Wed morning but that was excusable - I'd had a veeeeery long night, it was pouring with rain, the nanny didn't turn up on time so I had to get all the kids dressed and out the door into the car by myself which was a total mission, so I felt I deserved a $2 hot choc), and no takeaways, altho I came close the other night when it was 5pm and I hadn't even started dinner. We ended up having scrambled eggs

Oh but do you know what SUCKS? I am paying $50 a week for the next few weeks to pay off bloody court fines that weren't mine in the first place! My Dad got caught driving in the bus lane in my car and refused to pay the fine coz he reckoned he wasn't (he so was!) so it ended up in court and I got slapped with a bloody reparation order! Grrr!

Not much encouragement for those 'good' epeople...

Becks well done on makign the decision to quit smoking, as emma said we will be here to encourage you all the way - I have been there done that... not easy but well worth it - i quiz 10 years ago and can't beleive the price of them - definately puts me off ever starting up again they were $5.05 for a pk of 20 tailormades, and $15 for rollies... they are at least double that now.

I actually tried to avoid replying on here. Failed on the very first day. Was hubby's new day at his job (okay not a really new job. He is just working directly for the company instead of contracted out to them so old job new person paying his paycheck) So we had hell pizza but just ordered one and a small one for McKayla.

I heard about the Pumpkin sale through Playcentre as well and was thinking of going but this one decided to cut a whole in her new blo*dy top I bought her so decided naaah she has her entire wardrobe for winter already except for socks and tights so not going to bother now. (yay for the bank balance)

And we are on a healthy diet at the same time and cutting down everywhere for the next 6 weeks. (we get paid on the 15th so want a full financial month as no spent month)

So far so good except for the first. All bills paid. We are just fighting with SA banks to give Grant his cards so we can pay for airline tickets for my dad that is coming in dec.

Okay better go this one is demanding to have me right now.

Doesn't sound like you're doing too badly Shirena, don't be so hard on yourself!

LOL Ann, I used to smoke back in the days when you could get 2 packs for $10 and still buy 10 packs, I think Holiday tens were like $2.80, crazy! I don't know how people afford it these days, I'd have to work for a whole hour to pay for one pack of smokes! Not to mention the fact I'd be paying tax on my wages then MORE tax on the smokes. No thanks!

We have though been trying really hard to save as much $$$ as we can while back on 2 incomes for the year and I'm pleased to say we've saved nearly half of our amount we were planning on for the entire year. I'm kind of finding this savings thing becoming addictive!! The more I see in the bank the more I want!

Good on you Becks for giving up smoking! Imagine what you can do with all that money!

So far so good but we have Rowan's baptism on Sunday so there'll be additional stuff to buy for that.

Yay for giving up smoking!

I'm the same with finding it addictive! Its weird how much I am enjoying this Hows the no smoking going Becks?

All going well here - have bought nothing except groceries today and there was nothing non-essential in there. Backfired a bit tho as I normally get everything from supermarket, but today decided to go to fruit/vege shop, Warehouse and then supermarket. Ended up costing me a bit more than normal, but hopefully have enough for more than a week.

Have had a bit of extra money come in today and some more expected very soon, but all will go to savings.

HAve decided I am not going to spend any money on Mothers Day present for mum - we are taking family photos tomorrow and will do some baking. Tho I want a present from my kids cos I want hair straightener!!

Had some people for dinner tonight and made everything from scratch - made my own yummy garlic and herb bread, and apple crumble with custard.

Um not too good . I haven't brought a packet I have been stretching this packet out to last me till tomorrow so I can have a few after the proms.

But other than that we have been really good. Did have to buy mcd's yesterday for the boys but that has been the only thing I have spent money on.

Yum Aimee, that sounds gooooood

I brought extra brocolli at supermarket today cause it was cheap so blanched and froze them. I have also borrowed my mums bread maker and made my 1st loaf today but it was a disaster cause I didn't add the right amount of flour so I've got another one set on timer to be ready at 7am tomorrow *fingers crossed*

Well, i' ve done crap this week. we got $1300 tax refund and I spent $495 on daycare bills - although we could get this back as my daycare lady - who actually no longer handles the bills - has discovered taine's winz subsidy has been going to some random ki - so we might get the $400 back. Spent $200 on a new printer (we really did need one), and $140 getting a new elliptical trainer on rental (but saved $800 not buying one new!). spent $30 on new pjs for Taine - although that was a neccesity. The two notebooks I bought probably weren't though,

end of the month I get my $4000 inheritence - which goes on my insurance bill - from crashing and having in laws cancel my insurance....grr, but the end of the term i get $2500 which is gong into the savings for a holiday. we are going to rent a bach in january and spend a week away.

confession over.

Thats ok Liz, you can start fresh tomorrow. Its only the 3rd today so you've got all your spending done now.

Just thought I'd add we didnt just have bread and crumble for dinner!! We also had roast chicken from the crockpot and lots of veges. It was Daniels sisters we had over and they need to eat more veges!

Sounds OK Becks, you said you wouldn't *buy* anymore smokes, and you haven't - well done you!

Good luck with the bread Anna! My only attempts with the breadmaker have been disastrous so I gave up lol.

Doing good here too. I'm finding that I'm even going around the house after DH turning all the lights off too LOL

I've got an extra special incentive if I can carry this on until October

I've also promised myself that I'll save my nappy commissions rather than using the money as a treat. I made $100 yesterday

good going girls!! remember something is better than nothing and its real hard not to purchase something "just cause" you can and you had the $$ spare. We have just about pd off our Credit Card and then its being CUT UP!! no more. Weve been on a budget for a while but now as im stopping one of my jobs have to be a bit wiser with what i purchase etc. The only thing we have coming up next month is Tristens 1st birthday which i have a lot of the stuff for already as been buying it gradually over the months but still have food etc to do but as im now a stay at home mum for a while will hopefully bake alot of the stuff..... well thats the intention anyways

I will definitely be joining you ladies as of Thursday this week, I need to buy some clothes first before I freeze my butt off!

I agree with Kandice, I've been spending money on lots of crap recently (although nothing like an LCD TV or Puppy - HA I'm not that rich - more like junk food and takeaways)

I'm going to join the weight thread too, I need to get healthy argh

Im gonna start a spending notebook so I can see where we (ME really!) waste $$$. I tend to buy things for Isla that she doesnt reall NEED,.. a book here, another clothing item there,...so thats gotta stop too! She has plenty!

Yay, lots more friends on our thread

Glad your bread was yummy Anna, and yay for commissions Toni! Think of the baby stuff you can buy with $100

Good luck with Rowan's baptism today Kate, hope the rain doesn't spoil it

Willie cheated today, but it was his money so it doesn't count He went to the bakery and bought lunch for him and Maya. I had marmite on toast instead coz I refuse to enable his spending

Lol Emma, good on you!

Im being so good right now,...have brought tonnes of cheap vege to freeze,..and have actually started doing it! yay! I have started writting a big list of staple food items to stick in the pantry, and then started planning our meals for the week around what we alreayd have in the pantry. Groceries is the main way I waste $$$!

Posted By: fire_engine

LOL Emma. I completely enabled DH spending his money on me and have no shame about it - had takeaways for dinner on Friday and lunch out yesterday, but I figure it's allowed (actually compulsory) cos it was my birthday!

Good on you Kellz! I've also started a list of things we always use and are good to stock up on. I really really want to get my groceries under control cos I find they're a really easy place to lose money. We're doing the shopping this afternoon and since I've already spend some of the grocery money, it looks like it might be soup and toast for the rest of the week!

Wooo Emma. Good girl!

I spent a lot of money on yarn. I went to a shop in order to get a couple of cables ~$5 each and walked out having spent $80. But I didn't just buy any old yarn, I bought reeeeally expensive stuff but it's sooo gorgeous. I am an idiot.

Right. Back on the wagon.

Oh man I just spent $22 at the supermarket, $6 was on baby food so thats okay, I only intended to go down for a big bottle of choc milk to curb my sugar cravings (don't worry, the choc mega milk with heart foundation tick LOL ...so it's okay well better than choc at least)

I walked away with a bag of chippies, a Lift Plus,AND a big block of Blackforest Choc I have absolutely no willpower.

For me it's not just about the money, I'm trying to change my bad eating habits, I know it's a lil late but I have started worrying about what Lucas is getting in my milk ...I'd hate to think what my cholesterol levels are like too. I am WORSE than those people they have on the downsize me show atm. I don't know how I got to this point but I definitely want to change my ways...

Watch this space. My theory is that Tommorow is the first day of the rest of my life ...I'll start tomorrow (Serious this time)

Good on ya'll for sticking to your guns, I need a boot up the bum!

And yet you guys are so sickeningly skinny! I am eternally jealous!

I must admit the supermarket is my fall down too, I justify it by saying "it's groceries which are a neccessity" but in reality I could spend waaaay less there! It doesn't help that I go to Countdown probably 3-4 times a week

Today I baked tho! Lemon and sour cream cake for dessert, peach yoghurt mini muffins and banana mini muffins for the freezer for gremlin snacks, a choc cake for the freezer and I made the snickers bar slice for our girlie night tomorrow night.
