I have been told that you should not get your hair dyed while you are pregnant. Is this true or was someone pulling my leg?!?!?!

I have dyed my hair twice since becoming pregnant and have no problems, also dyed my hair with permanent dyes throughout both my other pregnancies and no probs there either. If in doubt ask your doctor or midwife though.

Apparently you shouldn't dye your hair. I haven't exactly heard what it does to babies, but more of a "We don't know what it does" type measure.

I'm not sure I'd be so precautionary. I'd still dye it!

I asked my midwife if i could dye my hair and she told me definately not and if I really must, to put highlights so that the dye doesnt sit on the scalp, but every midwife has there own beliefs and opinions if you know what I mean. Ive heard of other people dying their hair while pregnant and bubs has been fine.

It's one of those things where it's not sure what if any damage is done to the unborn baby but bottom line is that you do have chemicals on your head that *could* get into your system...

I'm personally staying away from it but it's up to you...

I think they have done tests and shown that they chemicals were found in the persons system after having their hair dyed, only trace amounts. By that logic you could I assume get highlights, as the dye doesn't actually sit on your head

I had a semi permanent and highlights done just as I was out of my first trimester, and midwife said that this was ok - not planning to do it again any time soon though as I can't afford it ! It hasn't worried me too much as everything is fine so far.

I am sure that the book "what to expect when you are expecting" has a page on this, and from memory I am also sure that it said that as there are only trace amounts that get through it is safe to dye your hair...it is at bookstores so next time you wonder past go in and find the book and have a look, ofcourse I may be worng but a am pretty sure that's what it said....?

I waited until I was 15 weeks before I dyed my hair. I felt more comfortable waiting until after the first trimester was over.

Personal choice but there ahve been links to hair dyes causing cancer, especially the darker colours. Whether this transposes to a later effect on baby, I doubt we will ever know so... who knows?

Its a personal decision really.
I wont be colouring my hair this tiem round only becuase my skin seems to be allergic to jsut about any chemical it comes into contact.
They say pregnancy can cause reactions to certain things, so you could end up with a chemical reaction to the colour.
But from my experience I have never been told it was bad to colour your hair when pregnant otherwise we wouldve been told while training to be a hairdresser not to colour pregnant womens hair.
But sticking to foils/ cap is the best way to avoid a chemical reaction, and there are lighteners and colours that have no amonia in them so the smell wont be a problem.

I dyed mine last time and all was fine, same again this time, its not like the dye is actually colouring your scalp but its a personal decision

It seems there are mixed ideas, I have been told by some hairdressers it is fine and others that you should def not do it.

Coming from a science background I try to put the least amount of chemicals near my body, not only that they can get into your system but the strong smell.

Right now I have lovely regrowth but it is probably a good break for my hair

ive had my hair done every 7 weeks, i get a full head of foils which are aparently ok as the dye doesnt touch your scalp.

aparently organic and henna dyes are fine tho.
