You will be booked in for a scan at 18 weeks for a full anatomy scan and that is when you can ask to find out the sex of the baby (and the week when you can actually see) and this scan is free.
If you want a seperate scan and you dont have a docs/midwifes ref then it costs any thing from $60 - $120. ------------- http://lilypie.com">

Are scan prices the same everywhere? I asked Hamilton Radiology and they said without a referral form (which had to be for a medical reason) the scan at about 19-20 weeks would be $190 and only $30 with a referral. ------------- ** MUM TO ** Ethan 29/08/2006 Brooke 22/09/2008 |

From my memory (which is quite bad!) - I think the midwife books you in for a 20 wk scan which is the last one until baby is born (unless you have complications) - In Palmy they are free with referral, not sure about other centres. ------------- http://www.snugglepie.com">

No scan prices are different everywhere. It really depends on where you go. Last time I used Insight Radiology & it cost $75 with a referral, I hate to think how much it would have been without one! But the quality of the scan pics & the detail were so much better than most places I have been to since. As far as I'm aware, 'routine' scans should be free with a referral. Non-routine scans (like my dating scan), may require you to pay a small fee if you have a referral, and the price does vary from place to place - make sure when you're ringing up that they're not quoting you for the 4D ones, those cost *heaps*. Hey Jax, alot of places have a surcharge now, so even routine scans can cost. I've had two scans this time around, one for nuchal translucency & the other for anatomy & it cost $25 each time. The reason I was told was that the services they provide cost more than what the government reimburses them. Wow Toni ! I had no idea... well, at least as far as the fact that it varies so much in cost, from what you and everyone else have said. Haha its amazing the things you learn when preggy! My MIL tried to tell me that EVERYTHING was free while pregnant. She told me that I should get my broken tooth fixed while I was preggy coz it will be free!! The anatomy scan used to be free in Auck if you used the Domino (hospital) midwives beacuse they did it at the hospital radiology dpt, but not sure if it still is. ------------- Maya Grace (28/02/03)

From my experience, scans before eight weeks are free (usually only given if needed). Scans after can vary in price depending on where you get them done. I get my nuchal scans done at more expensive place ($80) 'cause they are 'better' (according to midwife mum) but get my anatomy scan done at a diff place which is free. I am in Auckland and all my scans were free. And I had many. Mind you because I was under manukau county the 3D/4D scans were not free.....Shame!!!

I'm having a scan at the end of next week (because I am such a neurotic nut after last time!) and I have to pay $25. My GP said I should leave it another week as it might be too early for a heartbeat, but said if I'm prepared to pay another $25 I can have another scan later on. ------------- Maya Grace (28/02/03)

I dont have to pay anything for a scan and I have to have a few growth ones.. I'll be just on 6 weeks. May be too early to see the heartbeat, but they should definitely be able to see the yolk sack and fetal pole. If we don't get a heartbeat then will have a follow up scan at 7 weeks. This isn't normal, my GP is just indulging me because I am so freaked out by the possibility of m/c again.
My first scan with Maya was at 8w6d and she looked like a flashing jellybean (the flashing was the heartbeat). So cute! ------------- Maya Grace (28/02/03)

oh man that seems pricey......I got 2 videos and 2 DVD...(I had loads of scans) and each time free!!!....I guess I was lucky.

| I had my first scan (nuchal) at 13 weeks or so at Horizon scanning in West Auckland and it was free, and I have my next scan in a few weeks time (4D) in Mt Roskill and this is also free. I was told I would only be paying if I chose to go to a different place for the scan. |

Vick, I had the transvaginal u/s with the baby we lost as they couldn't get a pic externally. I talked to teh lady at the scan place and she said they will definitely try that if they can't get a good external pic. ------------- Maya Grace (28/02/03)

You need to phone to shop around for scans, for example Insite by the North Shore hospital charge $190 for the 4d scan, Auckland X-Ray group charge nothing (oh you do have to take your own blank DVD or pay $10 for one there). Both have the same qualifications.
The government fund the scans required by your MW with a referal, some places want extra money on top of that and some don't. |

I'm in Hamilton and had a referral form from the midwife for both 12wk and 20wk scan. I went to Hamilton Radiology and the 1st scan was free, with the 20wk one costing $30 + $10 for the DVD (note: they don't let you take your own DVD).
Now being diagnosed with gestational diabetes and told that I will need more scans, but they will be at the hospital, and I assume will be free b'cos of the extra care I need. |

I had an extra scan (for excessive bleeding) done at Waikato Hospital, and it was free. I assume yours will be too, as they are for your health, not for pleasure, if that makes sense. ------------- Becca, mum of 2 girls & 3 boys |

Linelle your midwife should give you a referral for your 20wk scan, if you're worried I would just ask her. My midwife referred us to Medex here in Hamilton, but I think it depends on who they are and where they work as to where they refer you.
