DH and I are looking at adding some rooms onto our small house - a new bedroom for us and another for the next kid...
What I need to know is how many bathrooms people would recommend - we want to do this on the cheap, so if we don't need another bathroom thats cool - but I tend to think 2 bathrooms would be better... We aren't planning any more than 2 kids...
Any thoughts welcome

I don't really think you need 2 bathrooms for 4 people. But for resale if you have a 4-5 bedroom house, 2 bathrooms is better.

The changes will make it a 3 bedroom house, as one of the current bedrooms will become part of the lounge...
Current bathroom has a bath and shower, with separate toilet

One bathroom in a three bedroom house sounds normal to me.
Although, we have 3 bedrooms and a study (could be a single room), with a full bathroom, ensuite and downstairs toilet.
Works well for us.

Why don't you have the main bathroom and then a ensuite for the master bedroom.
With me being as sick as I have been the last couple of days, I recommend two toilets at least!!!!

We have an ensuite and it is not huge but I am glad it is there, It has a shower not bath.
Our Other bathroom/toilet is bigger and has a shower over bath. Its great!!
We need to Bathrooms as we have alot of visitors and I hate waiting while others do their thing in a single bath room house. So I would say add another ensuite next to your new bedroom. Oh and while you are at it, add a walk in wardrobe....Oh how I wish I had one!!

Having 2 toilets is smart. My parents have this in their 3 bedroom house but only 1 bathroom and when I was living at home it was great especially when my bro would be hung over and in the toilet all day long lol..
We only have 1 bathroom in our 3 bedroom place, it has a seperate toilet and I don't see the need for another bathroom.

In our (previous) 3 bdrm home we just had one toilet, that was for 2 adults, 1 TT child and one in nappies. It worked fine enough but resale with toilets is a big deal. I'd be going for an ensuite if I could but IMO with 3 bdrms not 4, and that the bathroom and toilet are separate, the choice will be totally up to you.
Even in our 5bdrm house I still don't have an ensuite (we have 2 separate toilets), but I really do want to get one someday. Especially for 'relations' cleanup

We had 2 toilets and one bathroom in our last three bedroom. The 4 brm we are in now only has one bathroom with a separate toilet which is OK atm, but we are eventually gonna need another bathroom with this many kids!

Why is sex so messy?
I like white toilets best.
Build 4 toilets. Then there's one for each person.

"The key to a happy marriage is separate bathrooms." ~ Katherine Granich
I have always maintained that two bathrooms is the key to a good relationship. DH and I lived in a three-bedroom flat when we were first married, and it had an ensuite (mine) with a shower and toilet, and another bathroom with a shower and toilet (his + guests). We then moved to a four-bedroom home -- an old bungalow -- with a separate toilet and bathroom/shower, which I hated. Now we are back in a three-bedroom house with an ensuite (shower/toilet) that is mine, and another separate toilet and bathroom/shower, which is his and guests'.
I hate sharing a toilet, and I liek to have all of makeup and products and crap spread out over the sink in my own bathroom with no boy germs to mess it up. No beard hairs, no toothpaste tubes with the lids off... Ah, bliss. The bonus is that he keeps the other bathroom clean, as it's his and for guests, so I don't have to do it. (Score for me!)

lolololol.
go for an ensuite, even if it's just a toilet and a tiny shower in it.
we currently have a separate bathroom with shower and bath, then a separate toilet.
It works mostly ok apart from the fact that once 1 kids wants to go the other always decides they do to so its a choice of who goes first etc/fights. ick
I think with 2 girls, as teenagers i will be looking for ah ouse with at least 2 bathrooms. If we end up building like i want to, they'll have and ensuite connecting their 2 berooms with a double vanity so they don't have to share! lol

If you want to stay in the house long term (as in while the kids are teens) and you wind up having a girl next time then I would definitely recommend a second bathroom! Teenage girls live in front of the mirror in the bathroom on school mornings and it would be a nightmare if you were all having to share
We're looking at property at the moment and having 2 girls- I don't even look at a house unless it has 2+ bathrooms!

if you can afford the ensuite, then definately add it! if not, then 1 bathroom for a 3bdrm house is fine.

We have two bedrooms with a bath room in between, one master bedroom with ensuite off it. Is bliss. Ensuite not big enough to swing a cat, but is wonderful when have guests and if guests are father in law with dodgy eyesight and trembly hands ... you'll be pleased to have an ensuite.

i second the ensuite thing - I love it...dont feel you have to put something on to go to bathroom etc....
we have three ensuites and another bathroom....we have more than needed....ella has her own ensuite...LOL...not that she ever uses it!
Our next house the ensuite bathroom for DH and I will have a toilet in own room with ventilation....!

I think at the minimum, a second toilet gives good value. And if you have 2 down with a tummy illness saves on mess.
i know that I would put 2 toilets on my wanted list next time.
