OK so life just got really interesting...

A couple of hours ago I heard a loud bang and assumed it was Willie going to the toilet or something so ignored it. Then I got up to go to the bathroom, and stepped in a puddle on the kitchen floor. Looked up and two of the beams in the ceiling are cracked and sagging, as is the gib board. So I rang the land lady, who rang her insurance company, who said to ring the fire brigade.

So, feeling like an idiot, I rang the Fire Brigade. They arrived. Fireman takes one look at the ceiling and says "oh no, I don't like the look of that, that roof is going to collapse."

They went up in the ceiling, apparently all the wiring is shot to buggery and there's been repairs done that the fireman described as "suss".

So they have ordered us out of the house. Tonight. Apparently it's not safe. He said there's only a 10% chance that it will collapse tonight, but he's not comfortable with us staying here. So now just waiting on the insurance company to let us know what motel to go to. Of course the kids are all asleep, completely oblivious, so now I have to get them all up and drag them out in the cold and the wet. Nice!

And to top it off, the fire brigade say the roof is shot and the whole house needs reroofing. Nice! As if that wouldn't be a PITA at the best of the times, factor in the three small kids and being 30 weeks pregnant and it's a freaking disaster!

I have to laugh, what else can I do?!

Ah Emma, what a monster-PITA!  And so very Home & Away at that.  Thank God you heard those bangs to start with.  Man, NZ houses are so shonky it's rediculous!!  Let us know how you're getting on in the Motel, chick.  I hope there's a big unit available!  With of course, a dishwasher, dryer, elec blankets, SKY, decent coffee (I can't believe there's still places that don't have it... cretans), and a hoarde of take-out places nearby that are keen to deliver free of charge!

Quick update while the land lady is out with the roofing guy...

Motel was a disaster. Think both gremlins still awake at 5am and Maya Grace bouncing around like Tigger, what an adventure

Insurance assessor has been, what a loser, he had no torch to look in the ceiling and his camera had flat batteries

Roofing guy is here, what a sweetie. He reckons the inside is a shambles and could collapse, but has identified the exterior probs and is sorting a quote.

Just waiting on the electrician and builder to tell us if it is safe to stay here.

Thanks for all your thoughts, what an adventure!

Whew, the wiring is safe! The electrician said it's old, and has obviously had some home-fix-it jobs done on it but nothing that is a fire/electrocution risk as it's all properly insulated.

Waiting on the builder now to determine the extent of the damage to the beams and the ceiling boards but the electrician said he'd be happy for us to keep staying here, that there's no immediate danger with the wiring.

One thing that does annoy me a bit is that my landlady told me last night that they didn't have a building inspection done when they bought the place, they had a friend who is a builder look it over, which is fine - but he told them NOT to buy the place coz it is a disaster waiting to happen. Don't get me wrong, my landlady and her DH are awesome people but some warning might have been nice given that they *knew* there were potential problems.

The electrician pretty much said that the shell of the house is OK, everything else has been done on the cheap and nasty, presumably as renovations to the original house, but no one knows for sure as the council "lost" all their records when they moved offices a few years ago so no one even knows whether the renovations and ad ons were permitted. He also said that some of the ceiling boards were so rotten it scared him being up there, which fits with what the roofing guy said - he reckons the roof has been done on the cheap and nasty (am I sensing a theme here?) and that water has been getting in thru the dodgy flashings for years.

But overall I'm stoked for two reasons: 1. We get to stay here, the motel was an absolute mission! and 2. I don't own the house so no matter how much it costs to fix, it's not my problem (thank the Lord!)

Oh and another good thing - we haven't seen our mousemate for a few days, Willie reckons he's probably been scared away by all the water, bonus!
