ok, its a leftover thing from pregnancy /childbirth but my lower back is stuffed.

When I am bent over (eg, kneeling down changing a nappy, sitting on ground folding clothes etc) and I stand up, it takes a while before I can even straighten myself up. I walk around like an old woman.

It is constantly achy and if I sleep on my tummy I wake up with it REALLY sore.

Then today I bent to pick Tom up and it REALLY hurt and now it hurts constantly when I move. It would have hurt more except I felt it "going" and put him straight back down.

I felt it was due to a loack of ab strength but when I did my personal trainer session he siad my abs werent "that" bad. thought maybe a tilted pelvis?

My other thought it it could be something like ankylosing spondilitis as I do have inflammatory bowel disease so have the dodgey system.

But my question is....who do you see? A phyiso? osteo? chiro?

What do each do that is different?

Osteo my suggestion, some Chiros are good I just prefer the Osteo approach. Physios not really the way to go in my opinion as they deal more with soft tissue problems. Ask around your friends to get referrals, sometimes that is the best way to go.

Here is a link that tells you a bit about what they do:

You should be able to get your treatments on ACC

I stuffed up my back during pregnancy and then screwed it over really bad picking Daniel up out of his cot and I felt like I had to be constantly bent to feel somewhat ok.

I went to a chiro and he sorted me out - I had part of it out causing a tilted pelvis. Now I visit him once a month just to make sure it doesn't go back out.. just to keep on top of things because I left it so long before fixing it.

I use a physio who manipulates as have huge prob with my back. He is brilliant and specialises in backs. He deal with both bone and muscule so I feel like I am getting both looked at instead of one or the other.

He is in Christchurch so PM me if you want his details...

ACC will cover injury with an external force. Because I screwed mine over worse by lifting Daniel I was covered. So yes it would.

Nikki, I have the same thing - my back hasn't been the same since having Bella. I see a chiro 6 weekly and actually just got ACC for a new injury, so I guess if you can attribute your pain to something new (even though the back issue is a constant thing) you may find you will get covered...

I know you are out of town, but if you want the name of my chiro (who is fabulous btw) then just PM me

went to see the physio but she didnt "fix" it. I want it to be instantly better. she didnt think it was from the pregnancy....what????? Its only been since I had Tom!

She reckons it is the squishy stuff between my vertebrae and that the jelly part has been all squished to the back from constant leaning forward. So I am not allowed to change Tom on the floor anymore, pick up his toys bend over etc.

I'm really struggling. I cant lift his buggy in and out of the car. I struggle to get him in and out of the car as I cant get low enough. And putting him to bed is awful! No way I can raise the bed as he spends most of the time standing. DH is going to look at a way to raise the WHOLE cot...only problem is I am such a short bum I may not be able to reach it.

and I cant take anti inflams!!

I have the antenatal girls coming round tomorrow and I cant clean up...DH is doing it all for me....I feel useless!

I went to the chiro as I put my back out after having Rohann (couldn't even roll over in bed without crying out in pain) and it was amazing - one session and it was fixed!! Only cost $35 too!

I'd definately give a chiro a visit, as they tend to fix theings much quicker I find. Poor you, it sounds awful!

Ditto - osteo's are wonderful. They work not just on your skeletal alignment but also on your muscles etc. It's worth checking one out! YOu may find it's not even your back - DH stuffed his back badly recently and it turned out he'd twisted his pelvis. He could barely move when he went to the osteo, and the osteo made such a difference.

I slipped a disc at the age of 18, so have pretty much had constant sciatic pain since then. Physio has made it less painful, but the only times I am painfree are after adjustments.

Becasue my back is so bad, it is not fixed permamnently form one visit, though my husband had his fixed in 3 visits when he injured his.

i would say Chiro, as that is my best experience, though an Osteo sounds worth a visit as well.

Hi NZPiper

Would reccomend you find yourself a decent osteopath.

Reason for this is the difference in methods of treatments.

A chiropracter deals with the nerves that come from the spine and only treats for this basically with manipulation.

A physio deals with the muscles and is more suited to rehabiliation

A (Good) Osteopath treats the body as a whole so will look at the skeletal structure, muscles, nerves, reproducutive systems, digestive, lymph systems, cranial, visceral tissue etc etc and will treat according to the problem. In effect an Osteo can do everything a Chrio or Physio can do Plus so much more. They are also able to put you on ACC and you don't need a referral from a doctor

Just another thought too.   I have also had lower back pain since both (J trying to do a back flip to get out didn't really help) plus I've just been generally achey all over.    I didn't fancy the expense of an osteo or chiro and being single Mum thought regular appointments could be tricky for me to find babysitters. So I've actually bought a biomag woolrest.   You can try for 60 days and send it back if you don't like it and they reckon you should notice a difference after using it for two weeks. Well I've been using it for one and suddenly noticed today that it didn't take quite as much effort to get up off the floor with J as it usually does (I too, look and feel like an old woman). Also my regular aches and pains feel a bit better. Early days yet but I'm hopeful that this will continue to provide a bit of relief (not to mention it's really snuggly for winter nights).

I've always wondered about those biomags and if they actually work.

I loved my chiro because he uses gentle techniques and my lower back was really badly out of place. Things like biomags wouldn't have fixed my prob unfortunately.

I always take Daniel to my appts though. He just sits in his pram watching my chiro the entire time.

Sister had novel solution for getting her baby in and out of a portacot (don't report me to cyfs)...

If you've got a portacot, and toms crawling, you could tip portacot over, he crawls into it, flip it upright again - wallah he's in/out of bed!

Sister had lower back problem from lifting her hefty little girl in and out of portacot (using back like a crane) so when her back finally went she experimented with 'tipping' her baby out (baby is 10 months). She got her back problem (turned out she had sprained her back and the muscles were swollen) fixed by using painkillers for the worst times and getting acupuncture for general pain relief.

PSML!!!!!! I just love it rackhell!!!!!! Tom would think that was hilarious! Unfortunately we dont have a portacot. I just get myself to the edge of his cot and lean on the edge to transfer the weight and then lean right out and put him in....its just a bugger when he wont settle and neeeds lots of patting etc.

Getting him up is easier as he will stand for me.
