We've got Rohann on thickened formula at the moment because since she has been on ranitidine for her reflux she has started spilling (which I know that is a symptom of reflux but the funny thing is before starting the medication she didn't spill - she has silent reflux). So we thought we would see if the AR would help (she was also gulping a lot and quite squirmy on the reg formula) and it appears to be, however because it's so thick we've had to go up to the 6mth + teat but it still seems quite slow and it's like she's getting bored/tiring out too soon. Has anyone had this problem before and what did the do? The only thing I can think of is to somehow make the hole bigger.

Funny, just today I saw some Avent teats at the supermarket that are 3mth plus size, but they say "for thicker liquids". I think they have the same number of "3mth" holes but slightly bigger to let more liquid through. Maybe you could look out for those teats, the ones for thicker liquid!? They say they are designed for it, so u could try that...
But I only just saw them, I don't know how good they are!!

The teats for thicker liquids have slits instead of holes. Josh is on thickened formula and he uses the 3 teats and doesnt seem to have much trouble.
If you want you can use a darning needle to put more holes in the teat and try that (the lady at the baby shop told DP to do that instead of buying new teats)

Is the formula warm? Josh has his formula prolly a bit warmer and i mix 20ml more water than it says (you can add more water to formula but never use less) so Josh has 220 ml of water with 4 scoops of formula.

I had one of my twins on AR, and I used the Avent "3" teats and she was fine. If you are using generic bottles, a cross cut teat is good because baby directs the flow as to how hard they suck....... Reflux is hell, I sympathise. I hope you find some relief soon.

Well I think I may have fixed the problem and it appears to all come down to how I prepare the formula. Mix it cold - then heat it and I took your advice wrxchic and heated longer and it seems to be working!! So thanks for that.

Tiff, my DD also has silent reflux, it does get better! Hugs to you!
As for the teats buy the variflow ones, they work really well! It has 3 settings so you can control the flow yourself and then your little one isn't working so hard to get her milk.
Just another quick point, you may find that the rantidine might not be as effective as losec. My DD was prescribed Rantidine first then had to be given losec a month after, just watch how she is over the next few weeks.
Reflux is a pain. DD still has an occassional flare up but it is easily managed as we know now what to look for.
Edited for spelling!
