As much as I do want to be a teacher I am finding my papers this semester boring - I had this problem last semester too. I told DH that I would give it one more semester and if I didn't like it I am going to change. Now I have decided to change i'm not sure what too. I want to do midwifery but at the stage of my life I can't with young children and at the moment Palmy Massey doesn't offer it. Does anyone know of any career websites that do free testing to see what careers would suit you?? ------------- I was a puree feeder, forward facing, cot sleeping, pram pushing kind of Mum... and my kids survived! |

| Biggest thing is becks - what do YOU want to do? I've always thought those career testing things were complete bollox to be honest. I did one and it told me that I was suited for office work, when in fact I HATE working in an office and love doing beauty stuff instead. What would make you really happy? |

You could try this website: http://www.kiwicareers.govt.nz/ - Kiwi careers . It has heaps of resources including details of different jobs: the tasks and specialisations, personal requirements, how to get into the job, working conditions & pay and job outlook.
I know how you feel. I still don't know what I want to do (when I grow up  ).
I agree with MissAngel, most quizzes I've done point me towards careers I'm not interested in. I've never tried a Career Adviser but maybe you could speak to one (do they have free career adviser services at Massey?). Since midwifery is a long term goal maybe start a nursing course and work as a nurse (for plunket or a medical centre/doctors office so you have set hours) until you're ready to study midwifery. -------------

| I agree re. the career testing ones - all the ones I've done have come up with me doing accountancy or actuarial jobs (mainly mathematical)....I have no interest in that whatsoever!!! Is there some form of study you can do that can be credited towards midwifery later on, that you can do now? |

i got very very bored doing teacher training as well but loved actual teaching in the end.. well until i had bubs.. do you not like the actual teaching either? ------------- Mum to two amazing boys! |

| I agree with KA - I hated the theoretical stuff most of the time because it was so boring, but loved teaching so stuck it out. So what is it that you don't like about it? Maybe you could work from there? |

| If you aren't sure what you want to do career wise you should maybe stop studying and just work part time or whatever until you figure out what you want to do rather than jumping into another course that you "may" want to do later and wasting a sh*tload of money doing it. And just wait until you are able to do midwifery if that's what you would really like to do. |

Are you still sick with GF? Maybe you could stop the teacher training since you've already made that decision, and spend some time getting better before launching into the next one - gives you time to think about where you want to head, too. ------------- Andie |

Teacher training bites. How have you found the practicums? That is what you should base it on. Tehre is very little out there that has training that is 'enjoyable', you kind of have to suck it up and wait for the real time.
But if you aren't enjoying the practical teaching sessions, then maybe it isn't right for you. I have tried loads of the career testing things on different sites and blow me down if they don't all come up teaching. And I am so over that now but it still comes up with that - skill set + interests are going to give the same responses I guess. -------------

I'm currently doing a BA witha major in Education and then after I finish that I am doing a GradDip(tchg)Prim and that is when I do the practicums. When I was doing my early childhood certificate I loved the practicum I did at my school placement so I know that once I do get to do my GradDip I think I will enjoy it. I am going to trawl the uni sites tonight and look at the Health Sciences and see what I can do there as that does interest me and will give me a challange. ------------- I was a puree feeder, forward facing, cot sleeping, pram pushing kind of Mum... and my kids survived! |
