following on from something Bombshell said...
what do you think when you see CAPITAL LETTERS in a post?
do you see it as YELLING? or a way of drawing attention to a particualr WORD? or do you see it another way completely?

It depends,
If it's just one random word in a sentence I see it as an attention drawing thing.
If it's whole sentences or the whole thing I see it as completely irritating to read. Sometimes yelling but mostly just irritating lol

Yup same here. One word = Emphasis. Whole post = Yelling and annoying

I tend to read it in the context of what the person is typing - So to me it could be either of what you are suggesting. Problem is if someone types in all CAPS all the time it's a bit confusing to distinguish I guess..
If I was using CAPS for example, I would interpret these as follows:
YOU ARE SO COOL! (would be me yelling out a statement)
You are SO cool! (could be either nice, or a little sarcastic)
|

Date Posted: 12 May 2008 at 6:11pm
I agree - one word would be used as an emphasis.
A whole post is irritating and although it looks like yelling I generally figure it's a newbie who doesn't know anything about message board etiquette.

I know sometimes it can be an accident that it got pushed instead of the shift key.
But as the others have said one word to Emphasis who thing either a mistake or yelling.

I don't really think about it either way to be honest. I just read what the words say, rather than how they are written - even if they are written to be more attention grabbing. If it's not something I'm interested in I don't read it

Basically its easier (when doing it with one word) to use caps than to change to italics and back as then you would have to use the mouse.
But I read it the same as above. And the no punctuation one - it drives me nuts when I have to do it but sometimes it's just necessary when holding a baby!

I have to say that many thoughts come across as YELLING when in CAPS... I think that when typing replies to posts, you need to be really aware of your audience and how it might read...

Emphasis if it is one or two words but I often interpret it as "yelling" (for want of a better work) if it is several sentences in CAPS.

It depends on the words for me. If someone's put a congrats kind of thing all in caps, I figure that they're just very happy for the person. If it's about somone's own frustrations, I figure they're really angry. If it's a negative comment about or directed to somene else in caps I read that as being said in a snarky and, well, a mean way.

Yeah how do you get those emoticons? I DO like your emoticons ...just not that one lol
And back to the topic at hand here, I think it really depends on the topic being discussed.
I generally use capitals when emphasising a specific word or phrase ....OR if Lucas has pressed caps lock and I've typed too much to go back and re-do it (I'm lazy)
I've never really read capitals as 'yelling' unless the context was a bit off & I could sense a bit of sarcasm or negativity.
Hope that makes sense

For work if we use caps we are trying to emphasis a word, if we were to write a sentence with caps it is to show anger or impatience etc....I would have thought the same on line.

I don't use text speak either. I'm a predictive girl
And as for the caps - If it's all in caps, it's yelling.
If there's the odd word, it's for emphasis.
All depends on the context of the post though.
And as for the no capitals/punctuation/sentences running into one another with no kind of sense (ie: talking about three different subjects in one sentence, or with "..." between each topic - not giving it it's own new line of text) just bugs me.
Once or twice is fine. It makes sense as most of us would be guilty of typing with one hand and while holding a baby.
I always just type/text as if I was actually talking face to face with that person.

Lol have to agree on you with that one Charly!! Maybe we can form the pedantic group.... hey you should have been a teacher And another predictive texter here too.
I see the caps things as different depending on the context of what is being said. For example.... "Your wee girl is SO cute!!!" is emphasis but if it was something like "I do NOT agree with what you've done" I'd probably get offended as I see it as really quite strong and forceful.
Think it depends on the words being used
And I do believe I may be forced to break into song sometime soon....
